DIY chaise lounge chair, wood bending technique

A quality country holiday means, first of all, good weather, and secondly, comfortable furniture. You can, of course, buy PVC furniture, but you obviously won’t be able to fully relax on swinging lounge chairs and chairs. It’s easier to make a folding chaise lounge out of wood with your own hands, albeit a makeshift one, but reliable, and most importantly - in full accordance with the dimensions of the future owners.

A purchased chaise longue looks beautiful, but can fail at the most inopportune moment.

Projects, drawings and sizes of folding sun loungers

There are two ways to select a prototype for furniture manufacturing. For example, copy the design of the most common and popular model, or assemble a homemade folding chaise longue using your own patterns.

Collapsible version of the classic model

Three models are most popular among lovers of country or beach holidays:

  • A classic version of a folding chaise lounge on a wooden frame with a fabric seat. Light weight, easy to transport and simple design. If you choose a prototype for your first attempt at making a folding chaise longue for your summer cottage with your own hands, then perhaps this model will be the best solution;
  • Composite folding model. If furniture will often have to be transported in the trunk of a car, then it is better to choose a folding chair design for a lounge chair to make with your own hands. It is lighter, smaller in size and easier to transport;
  • Chaise lounge - daybed. The largest, heaviest and most durable folding chair model for country holidays. It can be carried around the territory of a summer cottage, transported by car, but you can forget about going with a sun lounger to the beach of the nearest body of water.

All of the options listed do not require special equipment, machines or tools; a carpentry kit available in any garage is sufficient. There are only small additional requirements for the precision of manufacturing parts. In the first two cases, you can make folding furniture, as they say, “on your knees.”

Not all folding models are equally easy to carry

If you are building a folding chaise lounge chair, you will need to cut out a fairly large number of grooves on the side posts with your own hands. With their help, wooden planks for supporting the back of the seat are attached.

Important! The strength, reliability and appearance of the folding chaise longue depend on how accurately the grooves are made, so you will need to cut it using a hand router or a tabletop machine in a carpentry workshop.

In a summer cottage, you should not plan to make a folding couch. If you wish, you can order a set of basic parts for a wooden folding chaise lounge from a carpentry workshop, and then fit and assemble the existing set with your own hands. This amount of work can be done in a summer cottage.

Stages of work on creating a country chaise lounge yourself

It is necessary to prepare the legs of the chaise lounge from bars of the required height. The standard height for the legs of the product is approximately five to ten centimeters, but if necessary, you can use a different height.

At a distance of five to seven centimeters from the edges of the long beams, the legs must be secured with long screws. The rollers should be secured in the center of the legs with smaller screws (about three centimeters).

The most suitable size for planks is eight by sixty centimeters .
Then you should screw the slats to the frame of the chaise lounge using spacers to obtain the required gaps (from one to two centimeters). Having completed all these steps, the chaise lounge must be sanded and painted. If you decide to make your own chaise longue, which will be folding, then the wood lattice will need to be divided into two parts , then connecting them with hinges for the doors. Moreover, it is necessary to remember about the fastening bar, which must rest on the stand secured with screws.

Classic version of a folding chaise lounge

The simplest and most accessible model to make with your own hands is shown in the photo below. In essence, a folding chaise longue consists of two wooden frames connected by a movable hinge.

Chaise longue with easily removable fabric base

A fabric or canvas panel stretched between the frames is used as the basis for the seat, and to prevent the chair from folding under the weight of the seated person, vertical stops are used in the back with the ability to adjust the angle of the backrest.

For your information! For beach versions of folding sun loungers, calico or satin fabrics are used. They dry quickly and do not create a “wet back” feeling. For a country house option, it is better to sew a mattress on a folding chaise longue.

A small addition to the classic design will not only increase the level of comfort, but also protect against drafts

For long-term relaxation, folding sun loungers are made with side posts and head support.

Chaise lounge functions

It is no coincidence that more and more summer residents are thinking about making a sun lounger. This device attracts them with its functional features:

  • A garden lounger provides the most comfortable conditions for resting the spine and the muscles located next to it. In the reclining position, the back muscles, which are subject to particularly high loads when working in the beds, relax as much as possible.
  • The sun loungers are not only easy to use, but also easy to fold, allowing you to move them from one place to another.
  • Design features allow the owner to effortlessly change the backrest tilt from a sitting to a lying position.
  • A wonderful decoration for a summer cottage that will look great not only in the garden, but also on the veranda. A chaise longue can give a country house a stylish and beautiful look.
  • A great way to relax for people of different sizes. Due to their high reliability, such devices can easily withstand up to 100 kg of live weight.

What tools and materials will be needed

The most difficult task in making a sun lounger involves finding quality wood. You will need blanks in the form of timber measuring 60x30 mm or 60x20 mm. The material must be perfect, without knots or damaged fibers. The design of the folding chaise lounge is such that in the main vertical posts you will need to make at least two drilling points for holes for an M8x50 bolt.

This significantly weakens the frame of the chaise lounge; folding furniture should be made only from oak or walnut, or, in extreme cases, acacia or elm. No pine, poplar or any hardwood.

For a soft base, you can use a tarpaulin, but in this case it is better to make a cover from a higher quality fabric over the seat. Sitting on a canvas base is not as comfortable as it might seem at first glance.

The tools you need are a hand or electric saw, an electric sharpener with an emery wheel, and an electric drill with a set of drills.

Material calculation

A list of parts for making a folding chaise longue is given in the addition to the drawing.

The total consumption of materials is as follows:

  • A block of oak wood 60x20 mm in the amount of 6.3 m;
  • Pine block 20x40 mm - 2.2 m.

To assemble a folding chaise longue, you will need a pair of screw-nut M8x50 in the amount of 4 pcs. and wood screws, 45-60 mm long, at least 10 pcs. In addition, wooden blanks will need to be coated with high-quality acrylic or oil varnish.

Material selection

Traditionally, chaise lounges for summer cottages are made of wood. They are distinguished by environmental safety, ease of operation and affordable price.

But wood is not the only material from which a chaise lounge can be made. Manufacturers also use other materials to make them:

  • plywood;
  • textile;
  • corrugated cardboard;
  • logs;
  • wooden pallets;
  • rattan;
  • plastic;

Plastic is quite often chosen for the manufacture of sun loungers, which are installed next to natural bodies of water and in swimming pools.

Advantages and disadvantages

Wood is popular as a material for making sun loungers for the garden due to the following advantages:

  • low price;
  • availability;
  • ease of care;
  • environmental friendliness.

The only drawback is low resistance to decay, which can be increased through special processing.

Often, chaise lounges for summer cottages are made of metal, which has the following positive properties:

  • high strength;
  • low weight, which can be achieved through the use of an aluminum frame in combination with a fabric middle.

To make such a chaise lounge, the owner must have welding skills to create a frame . Such a lounger must also be treated with anti-corrosion compounds, otherwise it will not last long.

Plastic structures have the following advantages:

  • light weight;
  • unusual design solutions;
  • no need for special care;
  • low price.

Plastic sun loungers have very low strength and do not withstand the aggressive influence of climate. Not everyone has enough experience and knowledge to independently build a deck chair from this material for a summer house.

How to make a folding sun lounger out of wood with your own hands

The blanks for making a folding beach chair must be dried in the shade for at least a week before starting work. In summer, wood often dries out, so to speak, “to the point of crackling,” so before you start cutting the pieces, you need to be sure that there will be no further shrinkage or warping.

First of all, we cut out the blanks and adjust them to length.

The next step is to remove the sharp edges and corners of the workpieces using an emery wheel. It is more pleasant to pick up and carry a folding chaise longue when there are no sharp or cutting edges on the frame.

We mark the drilling points and make holes for installing hinges using M8x50 screws.

We treat the parts of the folding frame with varnish and dry them.

The next step is to install the nuts in the holes and assemble the sides of the chaise lounge.

All that remains is to cut in the cross members and pull on the fabric cover.

To adjust the angle of inclination, we screw in several wooden plugs.

For those who like to relax by the water, the design can be supplemented with leg support, but in practice such rationalization has not proven itself to be the best. An additional pair of hinges complicates the folding frame of the chaise longue and makes it inconvenient to carry. Therefore, instead of leg support, ordinary wooden benches are often used, which simultaneously serve as a camping table.

The process of creating a chaise lounge based on a frame made of dense fabric

One of the popular and at the same time simple ways to independently create a country chaise longue is to make it from thick fabric on a frame. For a summer residence, this is a light and very comfortable product that can very quickly be converted from a chaise lounge to a chair and back to a lounger again.

Materials and tools for work:

  1. Two wooden slats (zero point twenty five to zero point six centimeters) of different lengths (one hundred twenty, one hundred ten, six hundred twenty centimeters).
  2. Wood slats (two by two centimeters): one sixty-five centimeters long, two each sixty and fifty centimeters long.
  3. Thick fabric (two to zero point five meters).
  4. Drill.
  5. Nuts and bolts of the required diameter.
  6. Polyvinyl acetate glue (PVA).
  7. Sandpaper (zero).
  8. Needle file (round).

You need to use dense fabric that is resistant to wear, water, and the effects of the sun. It can be denim, canvas, tarpaulin. In this case, the slats should be birch, oak or beech (as they are hard and durable).

To make a lightweight country chaise lounge yourself, you need to prepare slats of the required length and sand them. And then you should collect all the details.

How to make a camping folding lounge chair with your own hands (fabric)

It happens that a body of water or a place to relax is located quite far from the location of the country house, you can’t leave a sun lounger, and you don’t really want to carry not the most comfortable folding furniture several times a day. For such situations, you can make a camping version of a sun lounger, which in its structure resembles a fishing chair. It has no hinges, and the chair itself can be disassembled into two relatively small and lightweight backrests and a seat.

The design, dimensions of the furniture and the order of its assembly are shown in the diagram below

First of all, you will need to assemble the back frame. It is made in the form of a frame made of oak slats 50x20 mm. The fabric cover is pulled between two side posts. There are no through holes in the back and seat, so the overall frame is stronger and more rigid than the previous model. All connections are made using glue and self-tapping screws. The only drawback of the chair is the constant angle of the backrest. It will not be possible to adjust the geometry of the furniture to your parameters.

For composite models, covers are often made - bags; this simplifies the storage of the chaise longue at the end of the season and makes the process of transporting and carrying it to a vacation spot more convenient.

What types of sun loungers are there: design features

A comfortable garden chair has three basic types of design:

  • monolithic non-folding;

  • portable, clamshell type;

  • soldered, with fabric inserts.

The monolithic design of the sun lounger makes it truly durable. Transporting the chair will not be easy: it will not fit into the car. You will also need a lot of space for winter storage: you cannot fold such a chaise longue. There is also no mechanism for adjusting the backrest tilt. On the other hand, the absence of these components makes the chair reliable and not prone to breakdowns. A chaise longue made of durable plastic doesn’t even need to be removed from the garden for the winter.

The portable lounge chair folds up like a cot. In this form, you can take it on a trip to nature, rearrange it around the site and put it away in the house. In addition, set a comfortable tilt for the back of the chair. The main advantages are convenience and mobility.

The soldered version consists of lightweight metal tubes and waterproof fabric inserts. You can make the frame yourself from pipe scraps. For a sun lounger you need to take the most durable fabric. The quality of work determines the service life of the sun lounger.
