New furniture means comfort, coziness and aesthetic pleasure. But some 7-10 years will pass and your favorite bed or sofa begins to age: the wooden frame cracks in places, the upholstery tears, the foam base sags. Many owners are beginning to look at the bed differently and are thinking about replacing it. Of course, you can buy new furniture, but you can also try to repair it. Repairing beds and sofas helps extend the life of once-loved furniture, as well as save money in the family budget. If you have the desire and a little knowledge, you can easily restore your furniture. First you need to understand what is the cause of the breakdown.

How to make and install slats for an orthopedic bed with your own hands

If you need to buy or make a new bed with your own hands, you should formulate for yourself a number of main requirements that it must meet.

  • Orthopedic properties always come first. After all, such furniture should provide an opportunity to fully relax and restore strength after a hard day.
  • In second place is the build quality of the product and the materials used. Having spent effort, time, money, you must be sure that the purchase will be reliable, safe, and will last a long time.
  • And only in the third, fourth, etc. position - appearance, design, etc.

The orthopedic quality of beds is determined by the presence of a special base for the mattress. Thanks to its elasticity and the ability to bend smoothly, a physiologically correct position of the spine is achieved during sleep, the body is relaxed and can fully restore strength.

Slat base for mattress

Special slats and lamellas are installed on the bed frame, which in combination with the mattress create conditions for “quality” sleep. Moreover, the effectiveness of the slats is maintained not only with orthopedic, but also with conventional products. What are lamellas used for:

  1. They reduce the load on the mattress, enhance its quality, and extend its service life.
  2. They have springy qualities and elasticity, in which the load is distributed correctly.
  3. The spine takes the correct position during sleep.
  4. Special holders are used as fasteners, which is why the bed does not make noise or squeak when moving.
  5. Their location ensures natural ventilation of the mattress.

Professionally made lamellas, or latoflex, are wooden elastic strips made of bent-glued multilayer plywood. The thickness of each part is 0.8 cm, and the width can range from 5.3 to 6.8 cm. As a rule, their shape is slightly curved. Install Latoflex across the base of the bed at a distance of 2 to 6 cm, but not greater than the width of the bar used.

A single bed requires 15 slats, and a double bed requires 2 times more. Moreover, in the latter case, an additional middle support bar must be installed, and the slats are attached in two rows. Thus, one bed provides two orthopedic beds.

What can slats be made from? Traditionally, latoflex is made from the following types of wood:

The slats are attached to the bed frame using lath holders, which can be made of plastic, polypropylene or rubber, tape or metal stands.

To make orthopedic base slats with your own hands, you can use boards of the desired size after appropriate processing. Craftsmen who make their own beds offer different ways to attach them to the frame:

  • The generally accepted option is with self-tapping screws.
  • An original shock-absorbing method of attaching slats using thick edge tape.

  • Install the slats into the grooves created by attaching specially prepared bars to the frame.

Methods for restoring an old bed

If the bed is too old, you can restore it and make it look like new furniture. During the restoration process, it is necessary to carefully inspect the structure and identify parts that require replacement. Most often, the springs and mattress are changed during restoration. Sometimes people decide to replace worn side panels. To do this, you will have to purchase new panels that are suitable for the restored sofa. If the side parts are not very worn, you can sand them and varnish them. It is recommended to use varnish mixtures that have a mahogany tint.

Attaching wooden slats to the bed frame is often done using special ends made of polypropylene, plastic or rubber. When done well, these fasteners can handle the load and last a long time, but sometimes there are products that become unusable within a few months. Low-grade lathe holders initially look rubbery, but subsequently harden, crack and break. The slatted bottom begins to creak, the slats jump out of their fastening points, and as a result, the bed requires repair.

If 2-3 tips are broken, then the problem is solved by purchasing new holders at a price of 30-50 rubles. If all or most of the fasteners are destroyed, replacing them is quite expensive. A simple upgrade, which consists of changing the way the slats are secured, allows you to avoid costs and repair the bed yourself.

Tools for work:

The length of the staples for the stapler should be less than the thickness of the rail; drills with a diameter of 4–5 mm will be required.

  • Two strong tapes 20–40 mm wide and 2 m long;
  • M4 or M5 bolts, nuts, engravers – 4 pcs.;
  • Four furniture footers - holes for bolts are drilled into them.

Instead of footwear, other suitable sized parts with ribbed side edges are suitable. In extreme cases, the ends of the lamellas are fixed with wire.

Do-it-yourself bedroom repair

If all assembly rules are followed, the only thing that can cause a sleeping place to become unusable is a breakdown of the lamella or lath holder. Even an inexperienced craftsman can repair a bed with his own hands.

New low-quality holders have the appearance and quality of rubber, but over time they lose elasticity and break. As a result, you can hear the bottom creaking, and the slats often fall out of the fastenings. In this case, repairs are necessary. Replacing damaged base elements will have a short-lived effect, since they will be followed by other, equally low-quality parts breaking. The best way out is to improve the method of attaching the slats with your own hands.

Preparatory stage

You will need special tools and materials. Make sure you have:

  • construction stapler with staples;
  • screwdrivers;
  • chisels;
  • roulette;
  • electric drills with drills 4-5 mm;
  • M4/M5 bolts, engravers, nuts – 4 pcs. everyone;
  • 4 furniture footers;
  • knife;
  • 2 durable edge strips, 20-40 mm wide and 2 m long.

Repair procedure

  1. Remove damaged tips by prying up the plastic parts with a chisel.

  1. Use a screwdriver to adjust the loose connections of the bed frame.
  2. Place the lamellas on the freed frame with the curve down, repeating their previous placement.
  3. Attach the end of the edge tape with two staplers to the first plank, retreating 5-7 cm from its edge.
  4. Pull the edge tape lightly and staple it to the subsequent planks in the same way.
  5. You need to do the same on the other side of the slats, using the second tape.
  6. At the end of the work, roll up the resulting canvas from the slats and turn it over. Then place it back on the frame with the tape facing down.
  7. Mark the locations of the first lamella on the frame. Drill holes on both sides of the frame with an electric drill.
  8. Bolt the fittings together in the prepared holes. They will act as limiters that fix the position of the first bar.
  9. Install the first plank in a fixed position, slightly tension the slats. Place the same marks near the last bar.
  10. Prepare the holes and install the fittings.

Such repairs, done by yourself, will not take much time and will not entail large expenses. But you will be spared the problems of low-quality fastenings.

Legs

Separated legs can also be corrected by replacing nuts and screws or strengthening them with additional fasteners, for example, the same fastening corners only of a small size. If the nuts are simply loose, then they need to be tightened until they stop.

It is more difficult to get out of a situation when your legs are broken. You'll have to buy new ones or make an analogue yourself (and the latter option is possible if you have carpentry skills). But the simplest option, which does not require any financial expenses, is to abandon the legs altogether. No legs - no squeaking or other problems!

Get a double bed

A double bed is a necessary and desirable piece of furniture for every family. Its purchase is always associated with a long choice, as well as the expenditure of considerable funds. But you can make comfortable furniture for sleeping with your own hands, and you’ll still have money left over for a mattress and beautiful linen.

The bed that we will make is not just comfortable. It is beautiful, has a sleeping area of 1800x2000 cm, is equipped with a lifting mechanism and, accordingly, provides ample storage space.

Bunk bed

Nowadays, bunk beds are becoming increasingly popular. It saves space significantly, and children are also attracted to the bed under the ceiling. Models offered on the market often do not satisfy buyers with their price; moreover, it can be difficult to choose an option that is suitable both in terms of functionality, appearance and dimensions. In this case, the solution would be to make a bunk bed yourself. And since such furniture is used in most cases in the nursery, the need for repairs may arise much more often due to the increased energy of little boys and girls. Let's look at what you need to consider to make your bunk bed comfortable and reliable. The same information will help you during repairs.

Making a bunk bed

So, for the bed you will need timber 50x100 mm, solid boards 40, 30 and 20 mm thick, MDF with wood texture or laminate (for the outer parts). If desired, you can use plywood and self-adhesive film. All lumber must be edged and planed. Choose the type of wood according to your taste and financial capabilities. The main thing is to take accurate measurements so that the bed fits well in the intended place and is comfortable at the same time. Fastening is carried out with self-tapping screws, nails and steel angles with mandatory stiffeners. Don't forget to glue the joints with PVA glue.

Scheme for making a bunk bed

The main points of connecting the parts of the bed to each other were studied above. Let us now note some specific features that a bunk bed has. Its weakest point is the corner posts connecting the lower berth and the bed under the ceiling. Their design should be given special attention. To increase strength, we recommend making them from two 30 mm thick boards, without using tie-ins and external fasteners. For rigidity and support of the timber frames, use a regular floor plinth secured with self-tapping screws. You can hide the fasteners in the corners of the second tier with pieces of fiberboard.

Do not forget that a bunk bed must not be larger than certain dimensions. You should not make the width more than 710 mm, and the length more than 1900 mm, as this will negatively affect the strength of the bed, especially its second tier.

An important element of a bunk bed is the ladder. The easiest way is to make a vertical inclined staircase; all you need is a wooden beam and 6 mm bolts connecting the steps and the bed itself under the ceiling. The tilt will provide additional safety. A vertical staircase without a slope takes up less space and may look nicer, but it is less convenient. You can make a staircase with metal steps, which will also benefit aesthetically, but there will be a risk of slipping.

It is equally important to properly think through and implement the fencing on the second “floor”. A bunk bed has only one drawback - it is unsafe in some versions. Therefore, it is necessary to make the fence high enough and long enough. It would be nice if it occupied almost the entire length of the bed, leaving only an opening for the stairs at the foot.

DIY bed restoration

There is an opinion that modern people do not repair old furniture, but easily get rid of it in order to buy new one. This is not entirely true. Furniture is indeed purchased more often, but the attitude towards it has become more rational. The younger generation has learned to look critically at products, assessing their condition, degree of wear, and the possibility of restoration. Thanks to this, energy and time are saved. If, for example, a bed made of MDF has numerous damage to the frame and base for the mattress, there is no point in repairing it. But at the same time, no one refuses to restore a sleeping place made of solid wood. We invite you to find out what types of wear and tear on bedroom furniture can be repaired, and what you shouldn’t waste resources on.

Tsargi

Often problems arise with the drawers - the base attached to the headboard on which the mattress rests. Loose drawers can be easily put in order by simply unscrewing all the fasteners and then tightening them again. To strengthen the frame, you can use fastening corners, which are useful in cases where the fasteners have destroyed the wood so much that they have left no living space on it. It is easier to secure the corner, since there are a large number of holes on its sides. In addition, the mounting angle will hold the bed frame more securely.

What problems can occur with the bed?

Daily use of a bed, especially a double bed, sooner or later causes its breakdown. Depending on the original quality, the malfunction may be serious or minor. Most often (after 3-5 years of use), the following defects occur:

  • loosening of the structure, and as a result, the appearance of creaks;
  • the formation of gaps, cracks, cracks that deform the frame;
  • broken single lamellas;
  • hitches in the operation of the lifting mechanism (if the bed is equipped with it);
  • damaged legs of the product;
  • damaged mounting sockets;
  • defects of the bed frame (burst panels of the drawer, bottom, headboard).

Some of these damages can be repaired yourself, without calling a specialist. But there are also those that require qualified diagnostics and repairs, since they have a complex design that is vulnerable to unprofessional interventions.

Tips and tricks

To properly repair broken slats, you need to familiarize yourself with the recommendations and tips for carrying out repair work:

  • the surface on which repair work will be carried out must be covered with film in advance to protect it from debris;
  • to get to the installed slats, you will have to get rid of the armrests, back and side panels in advance;
  • when disassembling the structure, the fasteners are folded into a separate container;
  • Having disassembled the bed, the boards are carefully inspected for damage;
  • All damaged strips are carefully unscrewed with a screwdriver; tearing them out by hand is contraindicated.

What can you fix at home?

Do-it-yourself bed repairs usually begin with a thorough inspection. To do this, the bed and mattress are removed. The open orthopedic surface, accessible for viewing, is checked for cracks and other defects of the lamellas. If a damaged strip is found, as in the photo, it is pulled out of its socket to be replaced with a whole one. You can find a suitable one at any furniture center, using a broken one as a sample. This procedure is simple and will not take much time for home craftsmen. If you want to convert an outdated, sagging base made of fiberboard slabs into a proper orthopedic one, get ready for time and material costs. Dismantling the old one, measuring and installing a new base will cost a third of the cost of the bed. Such restoration is advisable if the furniture is made of solid wood or expensive types of wood, and remaking a bed from pressed shavings will be more expensive than buying a new one.

A rickety sleeping place, in which the backrest and footrest do not fit tightly to the frame and are loose, can be corrected yourself. To do this, you need to tighten the bolts and replace worn-out fittings. If the gaps have not disappeared, fill them with special furniture glue based on rubber.

Changing an old, broken bed leg is also possible at home. Matching it to a wooden product will not be difficult (the craftsman will plan a new one in a matter of minutes). Metal or plastic legs are a little more difficult to replace, since they have a different type of fastening; the entire supporting fragment will need to be updated.

The lifting mechanism, if there is one on the bed, is problematic to repair. To repair it, it is better to call a specialist who knows the features of different designs. An experienced specialist will tell you whether the entire lift or specific parts need to be replaced, while independent disassembly guarantees expensive installation of the entire system.

What to do if a squeak appears

It is inconvenient to fall asleep on a creaky bed, and it also causes discomfort to those around you. It is impossible to accurately determine the location of this unpleasant sound. It can come from the base or partitions, metal connections of the product.

Basic measures to eliminate squeaking:

  1. The first step is to determine the material from which the bed frame is made;
  2. Check all connections. It is necessary to tighten the connecting elements: screws, self-tapping screws, bolts and nuts. For reliability, they can be treated with a special furniture compound. Wax and soap can also serve as a replacement for this composition;
  3. Carefully inspect the mattress, especially the spring one. The cause of the unpleasant sound may be springs;
  4. If lamellas are used instead of springs, then broken elements can be easily replaced with new ones;
  5. Particular attention should be paid to the legs at the base of the bed. Now the choice of legs is huge and choosing the right ones will not be difficult;
  6. If squeaking is caused by boards lying too close to each other, there are several options for eliminating it - the boards are swapped, the base is turned over, or the contact points are treated with lubricant.

The most successful and 100% way to get rid of squeaking in connecting elements is to replace old fasteners and assemblies with new ones. And it is not necessary to call a specialized company for help for these purposes; you can independently repair the bed at home.

Purchasing furniture and choosing it is a truly difficult and responsible task. To avoid creaking, buy reliable metal products and forged models of bed bases.

Types and types of mechanisms

Today, furniture production has a large number of types and types of mechanisms. The photo below shows only some of them (the most common):

Click-clack

The click-clack mechanism has three positions, one for lying down and two for sitting. Usually installed on modern lamella-type models.

Meralax

Meralax is one of the reliable French clamshell layout mechanisms. It has an orthopedic effect in two versions - lamella and metal weaving.

Dolphin

AlbumDolphin mechanism
AlbumDolphin mechanism

The “dolphin” mechanism is exactly the option that combines compactness and convenience. The seat is attached to the side parts of the frame, pulling the mechanism out of the niche “towards you” to the upper horizontal position by the transverse bar and we get a full-fledged sleeping place.

This is the simplest of all existing mechanisms. When made of high quality, it is stable and durable, but, as a rule, the metal from which it is made leaves much to be desired.

Accordion

The “accordion” mechanism is one of the most popular mechanisms for transforming sofas; it has three layout positions.

One part is fixed, the other two have moving parts that are secured with locks.

Now it is installed mainly on modern models of upholstered furniture.

The most common mechanism is installed on a sofa book. It is quite simple in layout and has a number of advantages over other models. The entire structure is made of thick metal and high-quality rivets.

You can also familiarize yourself with other types of sofa transformation mechanisms in the article Review of sofa transformation mechanisms.

The models presented in the photo have their own individual characteristics. Here, not only the angle of inclination plays a role, affecting the lowering and raising of the weight, but also the material from which they are made.

Many manufacturers use thin-walled metal and very low quality rivets for these mechanisms, which is why the furniture becomes unusable in a very short time.

If it is not possible to replace broken mechanisms with new ones, you can make repairs at home. Of course, it won’t always be possible to do everything as it should, but it is quite possible to extend and give a “second” life to the furniture.

Lamels

The designs of many models today require the presence of lamellas - special slats that increase the orthopedic characteristics of the base. Due to excessive load and not very good quality, they often break.

There are three ways to fix the problem. If the lamella fastening system is movable, then the broken slats need to be removed and the lat holders moved wider, and it is advisable to “sort out” the lamellas: move the side ones to the center, and install the central ones at the edges. If the slats are tightly attached, then you will have to buy new slats and replace the broken ones with them.

Finally, there is a third option, which will be the most economical solution if a large number of rails have failed. You can completely replace the base with plywood, not forgetting to drill holes for ventilation in the plywood sheet with a thickness of at least 12 mm. Such a support, of course, is completely devoid of orthopedic effect, but it is strong, reliable and costs a penny.

Repair of the “sofa book” mechanism

Before starting repairs, you need to determine the extent and cause of the breakdown. As a rule, it is mainly the rivets of the guide strip that are bolted to the sofa frame that break here. They fly out completely or wear appears, leading to an increase in gaps.

For work we will need tools:

  1. Drill or screwdriver
  2. Rivets
  3. Hammer
  4. Anvil or any other massive stand

It is necessary to firmly fix the mechanism on the table surface, for example, using clamps. Using a drill, we drill out the broken rivet, starting with a small drill and gradually moving to the desired size.

To select the required drill diameter, the size of the rivet and its thickness, we measure it with a caliper. We insert it into the hole, with the cap down, and the part that will be riveted should face up.

If it is not possible to repair the mechanism using rivets, the bar can be secured using a bolt and nut.

Here it is very important to choose the right length so that the bolt does not rest against the frame from the inside, because cutting it off after installation will not be very convenient!

Failure options and fixes

To repair a bed at home, you must first find out the cause and type of damage. Most often it is necessary to restore the legs, slats, frame of the product, as well as the spring mattress. The technology for carrying out work is different in each case.

Leg repair

If the entire structure is attached to the legs, then bed repairs must be carried out very carefully. When parts become loose, the fasteners must be tightened. If they break, it is better to completely replace them. To do this, the nuts are unscrewed, damaged components are removed, and others are installed in their place and clamped with fasteners. Ready-made parts can be purchased or made independently. If the master is a beginner, then the first option is preferable.

Classification of beds, photos of adult and children's models in the interior

If the legs become loose, the fasteners need to be tightened

If a leg breaks, a complete replacement of the part is required.

Lamels

Most often, children's beds have to be repaired. The reason is that this type of furniture for a child is not only a piece of recreation. He can play on it, jump, do what he likes. This often causes damage to the lamella. If the damage is minor, then it is enough to fix the element with glue. Otherwise, the part is replaced. Moreover, now you can purchase not only the lamella itself, but also its holders, which are most often damaged.

If the damage is minor, then it is enough to fix the element with glue

In the event of a serious breakdown, the failed part will have to be replaced.

Frame frame

Although this part does not experience maximum stress, failure of the bed frame is common if it lasts more than 3-4 years. The problem may be as follows: the crossbars that connect the backrests pop out. The reason for this is the wear of the coupling bolt. To correct the situation, you need to drill several holes in the end of the cross member. After this, insert guide pins into the outer holes, and a tightening bolt into the middle one.

Another type of failure is the loss of the metal fitting connecting the front backrest and the crossbar of the furniture. To solve the problem, you should simply fix the element in its place. To do this, wind the thread around the foot in the opposite direction to the twist. The diameter of the product should be slightly larger than the size of the loosened hole.

Before fixing the part, the hole is coated with glue, and then the component is installed in place. A screw or self-tapping screw is also screwed into the back of the furniture, securing the footing on the back side. Once it has hardened, the bed can be used.

After 3-4 years of use of the product, the tightening bolt may fail, which will lead to breakage of the bed frame

If the cause of the breakdown is associated with a fallen out fitting, you should fix the element in place by winding a thread around it and lubricating the loose hole with glue

Lifting mechanism

Different types of lifting mechanisms are installed in beds, therefore their repair schemes are not the same. Before starting work, the type of structure is determined and a visual inspection is performed. The algorithm for repairing the bed lifting mechanism is as follows:

  1. First, the structure must be removed and disassembled. It is advisable to photograph the entire process or write down the sequence of unscrewing the parts so as not to get confused during assembly.
  2. Conduct a visual inspection of the mechanism to identify broken parts.
  3. Replace damaged components and assemble the structure.
  4. Place the product in place.

Differences in bed sizes in different countries, generally accepted standards

To prevent the lifting mechanism from breaking for a long time, it must be periodically lubricated. Thanks to this, the friction of the fragments, as well as their wear, will be reduced. In addition, the protective oil film will prevent rusting and corrosion processes.

To ensure that the lifting mechanism lasts as long as possible, it must be lubricated periodically.

Repair of the accordion sofa mechanism

This design has a number of small details that affect the correct layout of the sofa. Naturally, repairs will have their own difficulties, but with the right approach this issue can be resolved.

The figure shows the main elements of the “accordion” (its most vulnerable parts), since they bear the main load.

After the expiration of operating time, some of them require, at best, repair, and at worst, replacement.

The rollers must be replaced . At home, you can change the polyurethane wheel base by choosing the desired size (height). Having drilled out the mounting axle, it can be replaced with a regular bolt with two nuts for better fixation of the wheel.

Beech slats, due to their rigidity and strength, are almost impossible to break, although there are exceptions to the rule. Mostly the fasteners that “hold” the lamella break.

The photo shows that the lamella insert is attached to the metal frame using rivets.

Specialized stores sell almost all furniture fittings, including the “pockets” we need.

To replace them we will need a drill with which we need to drill out the rivets. We check their width and thickness to ensure that there are no unnecessary gaps.

Riveting can be done using smaller or larger hammers or using a special rivet setting tool.

But the best option for installing the slat holder would be a regular bolt and nut.

Base repair

Let's start with the basics. In order to repair the base of the bed, it will have to be disassembled almost completely. We remove the bed, mattress and everything that is in the bed drawers, if any. We disassemble the frame, unscrew all the fasteners - bolts, nuts, brackets, and so on. After this, we completely separate the parts of the bed and replace those that need repairs.

If necessary and desired, you can make the base yourself. To do this you will need boards, timber, tools and consumables such as screws and glue. A 7x4 cm beam is best suited. The boards should be no thinner than 2 cm and about 18 cm wide, but the length is at your discretion if you are making the base from scratch, or depends on the length of the existing frame. When the material is prepared, the beams are attached to the side walls of the frame with self-tapping screws. Boards are laid on them at a distance from each other, which are also fixed with self-tapping screws.

You can further strengthen the base boards by coating them with regular PVA glue. In this case, the bed can only be used after some time, when the glue has dried and the smell has disappeared. However, this process will take no more than a day, but the base will be strong and protected from squeaking.

A bunk bed can be repaired using the same principle, but requires more dismantling. Regardless of which of the berths you repair, the upper tier will have to be disconnected and then reinstalled.

This method is quite simple and requires a little time and effort. Its only disadvantage can be considered the lack of an orthopedic effect on the bed, which can be achieved with the help of a well-chosen mattress.

Repair of the sofa mechanism “Click clack”

Today, the quality of operation of “Click Klyak” mechanisms leaves much to be desired. Manufacturers do not pay much attention to strength, counting on a large frame area (the larger the area, the more stable the product).

The body bends in places where the weight is localized, since it is made of sheet iron, and this breaks the transformation lock itself.

At home, making repairs can be very problematic; only complete replacement is possible.

In order for the mechanism to serve for a long time, it is necessary to lubricate the rubbing joints in a timely manner.

In the figure below they are shown by arrows.

A common cause of breakdown and rapid failure of the mechanism is incorrectly tightened fastening bolts between the wooden frame and the mechanism.

During operation, large gaps appear, which lead to distortions and wear.

Mattress restoration

The main condition for restoring upholstered furniture is a strong frame. The mattress is also one of the structural elements of a soft bed, which requires proper care. One mattress lasts a child for about five years, after which it is better to replace the product with a new one. This is because the baby is growing and gaining weight and height. As a result, the mattress deforms over time and loses its orthopedic properties.

Spring mattresses are very popular, and they still remain in first place in the list in terms of sales. This product has an excellent orthopedic effect and a long service life, which often reaches up to 12-15 years. The service life depends on the use and storage of the product and may differ slightly from the indicated figures. If it breaks down, you don’t have to buy a new mattress in the store; you can try to restore it.

You can repair your bed mattress at home. To do this, you need to stock up on the following tools: a hammer and nails, a furniture stapler and slats, a foam roller and fabric for upholstery.

First, you should make sure about the type of mattress. The first option is intended for use on sleeping beds, the second - on sofas. Their difference lies in the shape of the corners: mattresses in beds have right angles, while sofas have rounded ones. Operations to restore the product are accompanied by the presence of debris and dust. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out work outdoors. If this cannot be done and the mattress repair has to be done within the apartment, then prepare a vacuum cleaner in advance to get rid of excess dust and dirt.

The main steps on how to repair a spring mattress for a bed with your own hands at home:

  1. The workplace must be prepared in such a way that the mattress can be accessed from all sides. An excellent solution would be to install four stools at the corners of the mattress. The product is placed on stools with the soft side. The paper clips and fastening parts are removed from the base, and the thread is removed;
  2. Change the flooring and clean the fabric insulating base of the springs from dust. Cut the harness and release each spring;
  3. Eliminate defects and put the base of the mattress in order: attach torn slats and pieces of fabric in place;
  4. Install each spring vertically so that it rises 10 centimeters above the level of the frame;
  5. The old springs are fastened to the slats using belts;
  6. Once the installation of the springs is complete, they begin to be tied. To do this, nails are driven along the edge of the frame. The upper part is tied using a rope of small diameter. They work in rows - first the transverse rows, then the longitudinal ones. The rope is not pulled too tightly to avoid the springs tightly fitting to each other;
  7. The rows are tied diagonally and the nails are bent;
  8. The resulting network with springs is covered with lining material. Usually it is fabric that is clamped by slats on the frame.

Repair of a sofa roll-out mechanism

The roll-out mechanism of a sofa is one of the most durable and reliable structures, but, as it turns out, it can also become unusable in a very short time.

The reason for this fragility is the poor quality of the layout elements, in particular the rollers. For reliable disassembly and assembly of the mechanism, the rollers must rotate easily and slide unhindered across the surface.

Watch the video of how a home mechanic changes the guide roller of a sofa with a Dolphin mechanism:

This article described only the main causes and options for breakdowns of sofa transformation mechanisms, which almost any owner can do without special training.

Causes of failure

Lamels can become unusable for various reasons. One of the most common is too high a load, that is, they will bend in the opposite direction and soon this will definitely lead to failure.

If poorly dried or low-quality wood was used in production, then such slats will also not last long.

Warning

You should always remember that only a trained specialist with the necessary set of tools can carry out a major repair of the sofa folding mechanism. He will always be able to accurately determine and eliminate the cause of the breakdown at a high quality level.

Without the proper experience, such repairs can lead to even greater malfunctions, therefore, if a problem is discovered, very carefully study the cause of the breakdown of your favorite sofa, evaluate the complexity of the design and your strengths, and also, if you still decide to repair the sofa mechanisms yourself , approach the process itself very responsibly.

Central beam

To replace a broken central beam, you will also have to spend money on a 4x8 cm beam of the required length. To strengthen it, it is recommended to make additional supports. They will be inside, so the aesthetics of the material is not important, the main thing is maximum strength. It is also better to fix both the beam and the supports to it using steel mounting angles.

As you can see, if desired, most problems in the bed can be eliminated on your own. The main thing is to do everything methodically and measuredly.
