Loft table - what materials are they made from, how to choose the right one and make it yourself?

In the 40s of the last century, the loft architectural style began to gain popularity in the United States. It originates in the industrial areas of New York, where many industrial premises were abandoned by their owners due to rising land prices. Representatives of bohemians were the first to pay attention to them and, after the purchase, began to use abandoned factory buildings to create housing and place furniture. It turned out cheaply and tastefully, which allowed the style to remain popular to this day. Nowadays, such arrangement of an apartment is very popular, and do-it-yourself loft-style furniture is perfect for both private homes and offices.

Loft style: what's the highlight?

The loft style, invented almost a century ago, can today be characterized by the fashionable word “anti-crisis”. The Great Depression that broke out in the late 20s led to the ruin of many large and small enterprises. Owners of industrial buildings suddenly discovered that idle factories could not pay for the maintenance of the property. Then many building owners decided to rent them out as housing, and the former workshops began to be occupied en masse by poor tenants.

Representatives of creative professions, barely making ends meet, did not have money for expensive furniture, but they had an abyss of artistic taste and imagination. They managed to construct spectacular interior compositions from plywood, planks and scrap metal, creating an original and unusual style that very quickly became fashionable and was called loft, i.e. attic. Its characteristic features:

  • a large space with a high ceiling, not divided into separate rooms;
  • brick walls without finishing;
  • large windows without curtains;
  • on the ceiling there are exposed massive beams of darkened wood;
  • floor - concrete or boards;
  • homemade furniture from scrap materials mixed with quite expensive and stylish things.

A loft interior is the ability to skillfully combine seemingly incompatible things: an expensive leather sofa and a coffee table made from shipping boxes, shelves made of raw boards and rusty fittings and elegant porcelain trinkets standing on them, a rough shelving unit made of corners and boards and a high-end media center. The furniture is designed in a deliberately brutal style with stains of paint and rust, industrial marks, and steel frames. At the same time, the wood and metal are varnished and eliminate even the thought of unsanitary conditions.

In furniture stores, loft-style items are sold at incredible prices. Meanwhile, almost all of them are extremely simple to manufacture and can be made with your own hands without much difficulty. To make them, you only need a minimal set of tools and some skill in working with wood and metal. With a little effort and a little imagination, you will furnish your apartment with stylish and fashionable furniture, spending mere pennies on it.

Style Features

The loft style erases boundaries and boundaries - the most daring and unusual solutions are acceptable in it, which has become a real discovery for creative and modern people. The premises evoke delight and are distinguished by originality, while they are characterized by such features as:

  • large windows without curtains or curtains;
  • inadmissibility of plasterboard and other partitions;
  • lack of finishing of brick walls;
  • concrete floors are covered only with wooden flooring;
  • the presence of a stove, fireplace, ceiling beams is acceptable;
  • modern lighting devices are used;
  • It is necessary to have antique-finished furniture or really old shelves and cabinets.

The loft is divided into: glamorous (bright interior elements), bohemian (the presence of antique items that are of high value), industrial (a minimum of decor and furniture).

What is loft style furniture made of?

To make furniture, the simplest materials are used, which, with a certain skill, can be found literally under your feet: steel corners, pipes and fittings, wooden boards and beams, jute ropes, plywood, container boxes and wooden pallets. A variety of fabrics, natural and artificial leather, carpeting, etc. are suitable for decoration. In general, things should be comfortable and functional, rough, but with a certain amount of grace.

When making furniture, you should not bring the finishing to perfection. Of course, we are not talking about protruding splinters and rough welds with metal deposits, but some imperfections that give the products a charm of individuality are not only acceptable, but also welcomed. So, you should not remove rusty stains or burnt markings from wood, or paint over the heads of screws or bolts. If new boards are used, it is advisable to lightly burn them with a blowtorch, creating the impression of being used.

In the manufacture of shelving and tables, metal pipes or angles, welded mesh, fittings, and hardware are widely used. Furniture elements made from painted cinder blocks or metal barrels look original and unusual.

But the most popular material for making loft furniture are wooden pallets (pallets). Their main advantage is that when constructing furniture, pallets can be used entirely or with minor alterations. No less attractive is the low cost of the material, especially when it comes to pallets that have already been in use. From them, as from construction elements, many stylish pieces of furniture are made: beds, sofas, coffee tables and dining tables, cabinets for various purposes and much more. How to do it? Let's get a look.

Sofas, ottomans, beds

The easiest way to make loft-style sofas and beds is from used pallets. It is enough to put soft pillows and a mattress on top and cover the pallets with matte varnish and the furniture is ready for use. As an option, you can attach wheels to such furniture, so it will be easier to move the furniture around the apartment as you please. You can use various industrial metal structures as a bed frame, if you can get them. If you know how to work with metal yourself, then you can make such a frame with your own hands, supplementing it, as in the previous version, with a soft mattress and a large number of pillows covered with natural fabric.

In addition to intricate metal structures and familiar pallets, you can use deck boards covered with matte varnish or solid layers of wood. Such a bed will look more original and non-standard. You can use metal barrels for the base of the sofa. The top of the barrels is carefully cut off, the cut points are sanded to remove roughness, and inside such a sofa is first filled with something durable as a base and soft stuffed pillows are placed on top.

Almost anything can be used for ottomans. Most often, pallets, metal and wooden barrels, various industrial mechanisms with soft cushions on top, etc. are used. Sometimes you can find more non-standard solutions, such as, for example, large antique suitcases with legs in open and closed form.

Pallet bed

Of course, only a wooden bed frame will be made from pallets, and the mattress for it will have to be purchased separately. However, thanks to this, the bed will cost at least half as much as if purchased at a furniture store.

Stage 1 - purchasing pallets

For a bed you will need 8 or 9 pallets. Be careful: the size depends on the marking. The height and length of all varieties are the same, but the width varies:

  • for EUR pallets - 800 mm;
  • for FIN pallets - 1000 mm;
  • American standard pallets have 1200 mm.

That is, if you need a bed with a width of 1600 mm, then take Euro pallets, if wider, take fin pallets. American pallets are much less common here, and not everyone needs a width of 2400 mm for a bed.

You can buy bed trays or try to get them for free from a large warehouse. True, only used pallets that may need minor repairs will be free.

Stage 2 - dry the wood

It is not known in what conditions the pallets were stored in the warehouse, so they should be thoroughly dried before starting work. If the weather permits and there is free space, then the best option is to dry it outdoors in the sun. However, you can also dry it indoors, placing it no closer than a meter from the heat source.

Stage 3 - sanding and painting

Go over each tray with sandpaper or a sander. The boards will become smooth and pleasant to the touch, free from splinters and dirt. After sanding, coat the wood with several layers of furniture varnish or paint. Each subsequent layer should be applied only after the previous one has dried.

Stage 4 - assembling the bed

Place four pallets on the floor with the legs facing up to form the base of the bed. Fasten them together with self-tapping screws. Perform the same operation separately with the four upper pallets, constructing an upper shield from them. Then install the upper half of the bed onto the base, securing the structure with wood glue and self-tapping screws or furniture dowels.

Stage 5 - top trim

You can do without this step, but it is better to cover the boards with thick felt or carpet so that the mattress does not slip on the surface of the bed. Place the felt on pallets, trim off the excess, and secure the covering with a construction stapler.

Stage 6 - final

Place the pre-purchased mattress, bedding and blanket on the bed.

If desired, you can make a bed head out of the remaining pallet by sawing it in half and attaching it to the base using a frame made of thick steel strips screwed on the back.

Coffee table made from pallets

Making a stylish coffee table is even easier than making a bed. To do this, you will need two Euro pallets, four furniture legs or wheels for chairs and thick glass. Treat the pallets as described above. Before varnishing, lightly burn the wood with a blowtorch to highlight the grain pattern more clearly, or treat it with stain and sandpaper, removing the thinnest top layer.

After the varnish has dried, fasten the pallets together, placing one on top of the other. Screw furniture legs or wheels to the bottom half, turn the table over and place a glass tabletop on top. Secure the glass with a special epoxy resin glue. When ordering glass from a workshop, do not forget to warn that the edges need to be processed to prevent cuts.

However, you can do without glass, but in this case you should carefully remove excess boards from the lower pallet and stuff them into the spaces between the boards onto the upper pallet. You should end up with a tabletop without wide gaps.

Stylish shelves on ropes

This is the simplest piece of furniture in the loft style. To make it you will need one board, a pair of brackets and six meters of strong thick rope.

  1. Saw the board into several shelves.
  2. Drill holes in the corners of each shelf to thread the rope through.
  3. Sand the shelves with sandpaper, then coat them with furniture varnish in several layers, wait until the varnish dries.
  4. Tie a knot on each rope and thread the ropes through the holes in the bottom shelf.
  5. At a distance of 25-35 cm, tie the second knots and secure the next shelf. This is the most difficult stage, because you need to ensure that the shelves hang evenly and are parallel to each other.
  6. Repeat the operation with each shelf.
  7. Attach the brackets to the wall and hang the finished shelf on them.

Kitchen and work tables

Loft-style kitchen and work tables, as well as ottomans and chairs, are made from almost anything. The main thing is good imagination and skillful hands. You can adapt a frame from a sewing machine (for example, a Singer machine) under the work table, and use ordinary boards or solid layers of wood as a working surface.

If you decide to opt for the second option, then you can choose a layer with a defect in the form of a longitudinal crack and fill the gap with colored glass, or even cover it with earth and plant lush green grass. It will look more than unusual, fresh, and such a miracle cannot but please the eye and leave your guests indifferent.

Wooden spools (reels for wires and cable winding) of various diameters, or car tires are perfect for coffee tables.

In general, there is just a lot of space to realize your fantasies. The main thing is not to deviate from the general style of the interior and not to overdo it. Do not forget that it is better not to use excessive luxury and various flowers and other “cutes” in the loft. Loft is a rough industrial style, a noisy, crowded urban style, adapted to life, so it is better to avoid excesses.

Book rack

To make a rack you will need a square steel pipe, a metal saw, a welding machine and wooden boards. Start by making a drawing of the future rack, calculate the dimensions and height of the shelves you need, then calculate the length of the pipe required to make the frame.

Metal hacksaw SPARTA 300mm

  • Cut the pipe into pieces of the required length, connect the structure using a welding machine.
  • Sand down the welds.
  • Paint the frame with black varnish.
  • Saw the shelves so that their length protrudes slightly beyond the rack posts, and sand the surface of the wood with sandpaper.
  • Lightly burn the boards with a blowtorch to create an aged effect, cover with several layers of clear varnish.
  • Place the shelves on the rack.

The work is finished, you can arrange books and other items.
