Each apartment has a sofa on which all family members often gather. Over time, the furniture cannot withstand the load, and sagging spots appear. This spoils not only the appearance, but also the functionality of the sofa. Fortunately, you can solve the problem yourself and without major financial expenses.
Frequent causes of breakdown of folding sofas
The design of this type of furniture provides for uninterrupted operation for 5-8 years. Further, individual elements that can be replaced or repaired may fail. It is not at all necessary that your sofa will break down in five years, because different models use different materials, but the mechanism itself has a degree of wear and tear and when the operating limit is exhausted, it will require replacement. This is a normal, natural phenomenon for all complex models and it is also logical to replace the damaged part in order to continue using your favorite sofa.
The most common causes of breakdowns of folding upholstered furniture include:
- cracks or breaks in the load-bearing part of the frame (they occur when there is excessive load on the sofa or when soft wood is used in the structure);
- breaks in the base of the frame (especially common in supports made of chipboard, since the material is not strong enough and has a short service life);
- deformation of the sofa box caused by the installation of powerful lifting mechanisms (occurs under disproportionate loads, for example, a gas lift with disproportionate power was installed on a chipboard box, which gradually breaks the wood board);
- malfunctions in the spring block (occur when springs burst or crack);
- failure of the layout mechanism (occurs for various reasons, which we will discuss in detail in the next paragraph).
Causes of failure
If the sofa has collapsed, then it is worth identifying the original source of the problem.
Usually the sofa sags in the middle, which greatly reduces the level of comfort.
Causes:
- the pillows are wrinkled, the reason is in the filler;
- the spring block sank;
- the frame bent.
To identify the cause of the hole, it is enough to visually evaluate each individual element. Sofa owners face such problems during long-term and active use of the furniture.
All cases can be corrected at home on our own. It is important to prepare all the necessary materials in advance and be patient.
Types and types of mechanisms
Today, furniture production has a large number of types and types of mechanisms. The photo below shows only some of them (the most common):

The click-clack mechanism has three positions, one for lying down and two for sitting. Usually installed on modern lamella-type models.

Meralax is one of the reliable French clamshell layout mechanisms. It has an orthopedic effect in two versions - lamella and metal weaving.

The “dolphin” mechanism is exactly the option that combines compactness and convenience. The seat is attached to the side parts of the frame, pulling the mechanism out of the niche “towards you” to the upper horizontal position by the transverse bar and we get a full-fledged sleeping place.
This is the simplest of all existing mechanisms. When made of high quality, it is stable and durable, but, as a rule, the metal from which it is made leaves much to be desired.
Accordion
The “accordion” mechanism is one of the most popular mechanisms for transforming sofas; it has three layout positions.
One part is fixed, the other two have moving parts that are secured with locks.
Now it is installed mainly on modern models of upholstered furniture.
The most common mechanism is installed on a sofa book. It is quite simple in layout and has a number of advantages over other models. The entire structure is made of thick metal and high-quality rivets.
You can also familiarize yourself with other types of sofa transformation mechanisms in the article Review of sofa transformation mechanisms.
The models presented in the photo have their own individual characteristics. Here, not only the angle of inclination plays a role, affecting the lowering and raising of the weight, but also the material from which they are made.
Many manufacturers use thin-walled metal and very low quality rivets for these mechanisms, which is why the furniture becomes unusable in a very short time.
If it is not possible to replace broken mechanisms with new ones, you can make repairs at home. Of course, it won’t always be possible to do everything as it should, but it is quite possible to extend and give a “second” life to the furniture.
Step-by-step instruction
You can repair a dented sofa only after identifying the cause of the hole.
The easiest way to replace the filling in pillows is:
- open the side seam;
- add filler in the required quantity;
- if necessary, completely remove the old filler, replacing it with a new one;
- Carefully sew up the side seam with strong thread.
It is recommended to use the same filler that was in the sofa cushions. It is usually enough to add more material if it has sagged after a few washes.
If the upholstery is worn, it is also recommended to replace it. It is important to choose the color of the fabric tone-on-tone or based on the principle of contrast.
Quite often, the reason for the appearance of holes on the sofa lies in a damaged spring block. In this case, you should remove the upholstery as carefully as possible so as not to spoil it.
Repairing a spring block with your own hands is easy:
- find the broken spring and pull it out;
- a new part of a suitable size should be placed in the free space;
- When making repairs, it is recommended to use pliers;
- It is important to install the new spring with the correct side so that it does not shoot out when using the sofa.
Upon inspection, it may turn out that the sofa sank due to a broken frame. You can solve this problem yourself. You just need to remove the broken part and make a new one of the appropriate size.
It is recommended to use the same type of wood from which the frame was originally made.
In some cases, it makes sense to immediately replace the mounts with new ones. Metal parts tend to rust over time from exposure to the environment. It is important to make a new frame part from dried wood. Otherwise, the repair will have to be repeated in the near future.
It is worth immediately checking the entire frame for cracks, and then making additional replacements if necessary.
Sofa Accordion. Sofa mechanism repair
Today we will repair the folding/unfolding mechanism of the sofa. This breakdown occurred because the moving connections of this mechanism failed. This connection is a bushing with a regular washer, riveted and tensioned with a spring.
In the second part, as you can see, he is no longer there.
This is why our sofa stopped folding/unfolding. Well, we are going to change all that now. First, we will analyze this as you can see. It's quite easy to disassemble because it's worn out.
We remove the tensioned spring and move on to a new set.
So, here we have the old set: bushing, spring, washer. As you can see, our washer has already worn through. We lost the second washer; when the mechanism flew out, it was lost.
And we will use these springs in the new set.
Now let's move on to the assembly. So, we put this tensioner in the form of a spring and a washer on the bolt. And we insert it all into the mechanism. Where it was originally.
Tips and mistakes
In particularly difficult situations, it is worth consulting with a specialist before starting repairs. You should handle the sofa very carefully when repairing the box spring, otherwise there is a risk of injury.
Be sure to use goggles and gloves for protection during restoration work. If the problem seems too complicated, then you should invite a specialist.
Let's look at the main mistakes when doing DIY repairs.
- Incorrect cutting. It is recommended to cut new fabric over old upholstery. If this is not possible, then you should take accurate measurements from sofa cushions or other elements.
- Use of untreated wood parts. The wood for the frame must be dried and impregnated with an antiseptic. Otherwise, the part will soon begin to rot.
- Neglect of additional fastenings. It is recommended to reinforce new parts on the frame with metal corners. This will make the design more reliable.
- Large distance between furniture stapler staples. The upholstery must be secured using a special method so that it does not come apart. The staples should be placed at a distance of no more than 20 mm from each other.
Sofa repair at home
Below we will look at the main problems that require repair work to restore the sofa.
Frame and transformation mechanism: step-by-step instructions
First of all, you need to check the condition of the sofa frame. To do this you will need to disassemble the structure.
Prices for popular models of screwdrivers
Step one: you need to disassemble the sofa, remove its upholstery and filling. After that, you should carefully remove dirt and dust that accumulate inside the structure over time. In some designs, the transformation mechanism is attached to the seat and back, and in this case there is no need to remove the upholstery.
Step two: now you need to inspect the condition of the frame beams. They are often deformed due to various impacts. If they are cracked or broken, it will be necessary to prepare the bars exactly to the size of the structure and install them. A cracked beam can be fixed using a metal angle and screws. As you can see in the photo, a fairly large number of fasteners will be required for the grip to be reliable.
We connect the parts of the beam with a corner
Step three: in some cases it becomes necessary to replace the plywood part of the sofa. The damage occurs because the springs push through the thin plywood.
Any cracked pieces of plywood will need to be removed.
Now we need to cut out a piece of plywood exactly to the size of the damaged part (in this case we use a diameter of 4 millimeters)
We prepare small bars and make holes in them for self-tapping screws
Now, using self-tapping screws and wooden blocks, you will need to secure the plywood part
Repair of the transformation mechanism will differ depending on its type:
- Book. A common problem with this mechanism is the breakage of the rivet on the guide bar. To make repairs, you must disassemble the structure, secure the mechanism with clamps, and then remove the rivet and replace it. If several parts become unusable at once, then the entire bar is replaced.
- Accordion. There are many miniature parts in this system, so it will be very difficult to carry out repairs yourself. Most often it is necessary to change the roller or its wheel; the lamella fasteners also often become unusable, so they are replaced with purchased ones.
- Click-clack. Damage to the housing occurs in the seat areas, causing the lock on the transformer to stop working. It cannot be restored, so you will need to install a new one.
- Roll-out. In this model, rollers are usually replaced, because they are often made of low quality materials. This mainly applies to plastic products that rapidly deform under pressure.
Very often, budget versions of sofas are equipped with a roll-out mechanism
There are cases when the fittings of the transformation mechanism have not lost their original appearance, but the spring requires replacement. It usually becomes deformed when there is too much load on the sofa. If there are deformed parts in the design of the mechanism, they must be removed and replaced. Let's look at the repair process using a clear example.
Step one: remove the spring from the transformation mechanism.
The spring of the mechanism should be brought
Step two: now we need to disassemble the latch.
The disassembled latch looks like this:
Next, take the bolt and clamp it with a vice.
Now you can assemble the clamp
This is what the mechanism looks like after repair
Spring block repair: step-by-step instructions
During operation, it is the spring unit that often fails. It consists of twisted metal elements connected at the top and bottom. The first sign of a breakdown is a characteristic creak that can be heard when trying to sit on the sofa.
Important point! Restoration of the spring block is carried out by replacing the connecting parts.
Step one: in this case, you will have to remove the upholstery and all the soft part using a special tool called an anti-stapler.
Staple remover prices
Step two: now you need to determine the type of breakdown and fix it:
- If the metal elements are disconnected from each other, they can be secured with wire. It is important to remember that the pointed parts of the wire will need to be bent inward.
- If the entire spring block has become unusable, then there is simply no point in repairing it, because after a while it will begin to creak again. Therefore, in this case, all that remains is to purchase a new one.
You can connect broken springs together using wire or a spring. In this case, a dowel was used as additional reinforcement.
"Naked" spring block
If, during operation, creaking is observed only in a certain place of the structure, then it makes sense to secure the lining between the metal elements. Of course, this is just a temporary measure, so if possible, the block will still have to be replaced.

Replacing filling and upholstery: step-by-step instructions
Over time, not only the frame elements and springs become unusable, but also the soft part of the sofa, and then it will also need to be replaced. We tell you how to do it correctly.
Step one: we need to evaluate the appearance of the fabric that is placed under and on top of the spring block - this can be either felt or batting. Thanks to the presence of such a lining, the springs will not push through the foam rubber and rest against the plywood parts. When dismantling old structures, craftsmen in most cases see the following picture. The batting layer has become deformed and lost its original appearance, so it will not be possible to leave it. Once you have removed this material, it is recommended to vacuum the structure to remove any remaining dust.
Step two: First, material should be placed under the spring block. It is not necessary to buy a new piece of fabric for such purposes, because you can even take an old, clean blanket.
We lay the fabric under the springs, and then secure the block to the frame
Step three: now we also have to put material on top of the spring block. We will use felt for such purposes. If this is not available, you can use unnecessary carpeting.
It is advisable to roll it in two layers, then cut it exactly according to the design parameters. Now we need to attach this material to the springs using a thick needle and thread (some craftsmen use an awl in such cases). Between stitches you should leave a step of 35 centimeters.
Attaching the material to the spring block
Step four: now we have to lay down the foam. If the old one looks normal, then you can leave it. Replacing foam rubber involves performing the following steps:
- You need to purchase filler about 40 centimeters thick. The better the quality of the foam, the faster it returns to its original shape when you press it, so it is advisable to choose an option with a dense structure.
- Now you need to cut a piece of foam rubber to the size of the structure and attach it using a stapler and staples.
We carefully fix the foam rubber on our structure
Step five: now you need to put a padding polyester on top of the foam rubber; if necessary, it can be replaced with another soft material. As an alternative, you can use holofiber - this material is durable and has a long service life. The synthetic winterizer is also secured to the structure using brackets. At the same time, it is recommended to glue it to the foam rubber, because during use it can slip. Now the structure must be left for several hours until the glue has completely dried, and only then can you proceed to another stage.
Step six: we have to secure the upholstery fabric. You can use the old one if it looks normal. However, many craftsmen prefer to make new upholstery to update the sofa.
If you plan to use old upholstery, you will need to wash it.
At this stage we have to choose the material from which the upholstery will be made. To do this, we will look at the features of the most popular types.
Table 3. Types of upholstery
Photo | Description |
Budget-friendly, natural material that is best suited for children's sofas. It is absolutely environmentally friendly and does not provoke allergic reactions. The only downside is that it has a short service life.
This is a very durable, embossed material, but the main advantage is that it has excellent wear resistance and does not lose its original appearance even with active exposure to the sun. However, such upholstery is quite difficult to care for, and the material is quite expensive.
This is a durable upholstery fabric that has been used since ancient times. It has good strength, but reacts negatively to ultraviolet rays, so this sofa can only be installed in a room where thick curtains hang.
The best solution would be to choose genuine leather for the upholstery of the sofa, because it is the most durable upholstery option. The main advantage is that the upholstery does not require special care and serves faithfully for many years. However, many people prefer to use leatherette instead of genuine leather, which has a budget price and an equally attractive appearance.
A material whose structure resembles velvet. It is very often used for upholstery of upholstered furniture, because it is environmentally friendly and does not require special care.
A soft material that has gained particular popularity in recent years. It has good wear resistance, does not stretch and retains its bright color for a long time. |
To cut out new upholstery, you need to remove the old covers, rip them apart at the seams, and then iron them, after which new upholstery should be made from them
Now we have to secure the upholstery on the sofa using a stapler. The fabric should be slightly stretched.
In order to preserve the upholstery of the sofa, it is recommended to sew a set of removable covers - they can be removed and washed at any time

What to do if the sofa falls in the middle?
Many people have logical questions about how to make a sofa that has sunk in the center of the seat. Don’t panic, you can solve the problem yourself and at home. This procedure will take some time and during repairs you may need the help of your friends, since the dimensions of the sofa can be quite large. But as a result, you will receive updated furniture that will last even longer and have a pleasant appearance.
But what to do if the depth of the sofa begins to sag very much? Do not despair, any soft sofa will become deformed over time and, of course, it can be restored. Buying a new model will in any case cost more than correcting old defects. Moreover, many people love their furniture and do not want to change the features of the interior.
Repair of the accordion sofa mechanism
This design has a number of small details that affect the correct layout of the sofa. Naturally, repairs will have their own difficulties, but with the right approach this issue can be resolved.
The figure shows the main elements of the “accordion” (its most vulnerable parts), since they bear the main load.
After the expiration of operating time, some of them require, at best, repair, and at worst, replacement.
The rollers must be replaced . At home, you can change the polyurethane wheel base by choosing the desired size (height). Having drilled out the mounting axle, it can be replaced with a regular bolt with two nuts for better fixation of the wheel.
Beech slats, due to their rigidity and strength, are almost impossible to break, although there are exceptions to the rule. Mostly the fasteners that “hold” the lamella break.
The photo shows that the lamella insert is attached to the metal frame using rivets.
Specialized stores sell almost all furniture fittings, including the “pockets” we need.
To replace them we will need a drill with which we need to drill out the rivets. We check their width and thickness to ensure that there are no unnecessary gaps.
Riveting can be done using smaller or larger hammers or using a special rivet setting tool.
But the best option for installing the slat holder would be a regular bolt and nut.
What do you need to work with a sofa?
Repairing a dented sofa is easy if you prepare in advance all the elements necessary for the work. The final result depends on you, because you can make it harder or, on the contrary, correct it and create a soft sofa that resembles a feather bed. Any sofa will eventually sag, so you need to be prepared for this course of events. So, in order to restore sagging sofas, you need to have on hand:
- foam seal;
- pliers;
- foam;
- fabric tape.
Sofas are the part of the furniture on which household members spend most of their time. Therefore, it’s normal to push through over time, the main thing is to know how to correct the situation.
Step-by-step description of the work
First, you should turn your sofa over so that its frame can be seen. All work depends on this action, since this is the only way to understand what is damaged in the furniture. Most often, in this case, the frame itself breaks, less often the foam rubber and upholstery are dented. In any case, the damage can be fixed.
When replacing the frame, you need to install not only new boards, but also all the screws, since corrosion can form on the old ones, causing various types of fungi. With foam rubber things are even simpler; just use an anti-stapler to remove the upholstery and replace the soft part.
In some cases, people try to immediately change the upholstery of furniture, because in this way it looks newer and fresher, but at the same time has a shape familiar to household members.
How to fix a sofa yourself if it collapses in the middle? Check the places where the pillows are placed. Perhaps someone just sat down very sharply and broke the base. Replacing it is simple; you just need to remove the cushions, select the boards to size and secure them carefully. You can put plywood on top for density.
A bigger problem could be that the springs on the sofa break. In order to restore furniture, you will need to remove the upholstery, the soft layer and find the cause of the unevenness. Then you should carefully remove the broken part with pliers, and then screw in a new spring. They are sold in many hardware stores, so you won’t have to look for a long time for the part. The main thing is to secure it tightly at the base, otherwise you will have to disassemble the upholstered furniture again.
In some cases, the pillows themselves may be the cause of the unevenness of the sofa. For example, after washing they became much softer than before, and now, when you sit on them, you feel like you’re falling through. Fixing this problem is as easy as shelling pears. You need to add more filling to the pillows, and then carefully sew them together.
Before you begin, evaluate the problem at hand. Based on this, already purchase the material and start doing business. Remember that even a beginner in this field can easily cope with the task.

The sofa book does not fold out
Usually this problem does not occur suddenly. Often it is preceded by completely harmless phenomena: it becomes a little more difficult to unfold, you have to make a little more effort when changing position, the seat somehow suspiciously presses against the armrest.
If you pay attention to minor defects in a timely manner, you can avoid serious damage. After all, it is usually enough to tighten a couple of screws or rivets in order to extend the service life of the entire mechanism.
Possible reasons
By indirect signs you can understand what prevents the sofa from taking the required position. If the problems are related to wear of the locking mechanism, then this is indicated by:
- lateral play of the seat;
- skewed towards one of the armrests;
- absence of a characteristic click;
- the clanging sound that occurs when transforming.
It happens that the book does not fold out due to a broken frame beam. In the folded position, this is indicated by the sagging edge of the seat. When unfolded, there is an uncharacteristic bump at the location where the position locking device is attached.
Remedies
The true scale of the problem can only be assessed by looking at the condition of the mechanism. To do this you need to remove the armrest. It is usually attached to the box with bolts, which are quite easy to unscrew. Having completed the task, they begin to inspect the problem area.
Often the culprit is loose fasteners to the frame beam. If these are bolts, then you can simply tighten them by first inserting additional washers. When the fixation mechanism is attached to the beam using screws, then:
- they are replaced with analogues of a larger cross-section;
- the timber is drilled further and bolts are used;
- reduce the diameter of the holes using wooden choppers.
In a situation where the problem was identified untimely and the wood burst, there are several ways to solve the problem.
- If the crack is longitudinal, then you can tighten the beam using metal clamps.
- Transverse indicates the need to strengthen the frame with a plank. It is filled from the side opposite to the mechanism.
- A completely burst timber is first glued. To do this, PVA is applied to the surface of the fracture, the fragments are connected and clamped with clamps. A day after this, the frame is strengthened using one of the above methods and the sofa is assembled.
Much less often, the cause of a breakdown is loosening of the rivets on the mechanism for fixing the book positions itself. After inspecting the removed device, even to an inexperienced person, the degree of its wear becomes obvious. Depending on the situation, rivets:
- compact;
- exchange for new ones;
- if the design allows, replace them with suitable size bolts with a disc head.
Sometimes the book does not unfold due to a foreign object getting into the mechanism. Most often this happens in systems equipped with springs. This problem can be solved easily - just remove the blockage, and the sofa will work properly.
Manufacturing defects often cause excessive efforts to be made when transforming furniture. As a result, the rods may bend. They are leveled using a regular hammer.
After the repair, you should make sure that the sofa can be easily converted. If defects are discovered in the operation of the mechanism, it makes sense to purchase a pair of new ones, since this indicates severe wear and the imminence of another breakdown.
What to do if the sofa is squashed: how to remove the hole on your own? Secrets of choosing strong furniture
Like any household item, sofas have their own service life, after which its consumer qualities begin to decline. Most often you have to deal with subsidence and squeezing of the filler - foam rubber or springs. Sometimes you can repair it yourself, but it can be easier to extend its service life with proper operation. The article describes in detail why pits appear, how to repair this defect on your own, and also provides recommendations for choosing high-quality furniture.

Why does a hole appear on the foam rubber?
Foam rubber sags not only due to improper treatment of the sofa. This is often due to the poor quality of the material itself, which quickly loses its elasticity and begins to compress and sag. The main reasons for pushing through the foam filler:
- poor quality material;
- dampening of the filler;
- excessive loads;
- knocking out dust;
- using furniture cleaners containing alcohol;
- proximity of heating devices;
- using a steam generator to clean a sofa.
How to choose the right foam rubber and how to replace it is discussed here.
What to do: how to repair?
Repairing a sagging sofa depends on its filling. Typically involves replacing worn out foam or spring blocks, sometimes parts of the main frame. At the same time, you can replace the upholstery and strengthen the filling to prevent subsidence.
What materials and tools are needed?
For repairs you will need:
- filler – foam rubber, synthetic winterizer, polyurethane, spring blocks, etc.;
- a construction stapler with staples or a staple gun;
- Screwdriver Set;
- anti-stapler;
- furniture belts;
- pliers;
- construction adhesive;
- for frame repairs - wooden blocks;
- optional upholstery material;
- thread for reupholstering furniture.
Do-it-yourself stages
The sofa should be turned over and inspected around the perimeter for defective boards. If the lamellas (perpendicular to the panel frame) on which the upholstered part of the furniture is placed are broken, they are replaced.
If the problem with a sagging seat is not in the frame, you need to remove the cushions, side panels, and upholstery. Inspect the frame from the inside, then the pillows. To do this, remove the upholstery and backing with an anti-stapler. If the model is spring, inspect the mechanisms.
- Twisted elements that have become disconnected from each other or from the frame can be restored using hardened wire and pliers. Sharp edges are bitten off and folded over.
- Individual springs that are broken or have lost their elasticity are replaced with new ones. To do this, the damaged parts are disconnected with pliers.
- If it is impossible to replace individual springs, replace the entire spring unit.
- If necessary, replace the plywood base.
The fastest way to replace a spring in a block is to bite it with pliers or wire cutters, carefully pull it out piece by piece, and then install a new one. After replacement, the new element is attached with a strong rope or wire. If the parts are long or, conversely, too short, it may be difficult to remove them and install new ones.
You should not spare the top foam layer after replacing the spring block - it is better to replace it as well.
Stages of restoring a foam block:
- The upholstery is removed from the furniture, having first unscrewed the bolts, screws, and removed the staples.
- The old filling is removed after first measuring its thickness and making a pattern. To do this, lay out the old filler on a flat floor on top of the new one, and trace the contours with a marker.
- The new filler is cut along the contour with a carpenter's or stationery knife, applied to the body, and the protruding parts are cut off.
- Install new foam rubber, gluing it with furniture glue in places of contact with the frame, and allow to dry.
- After the glue has dried, a layer of batting or padding polyester is placed on top, stretched, nailed around the perimeter with a stapler or staple gun.
How can you strengthen and strengthen?
When replacing a spring block, it can be strengthened by lining it with thick foam rubber from the inside and covering it with a thick layer of felt or synthetic padding on top. This will evenly distribute the load on the springs. The foam block is also strengthened in the same way, but you need to take into account the thickness of the reinforcing layer when making the pattern.
How to fix a sofa with your own hands?
Repairing an old sofa can be carried out comprehensively or partially. It all depends on the nature of the damage and its complexity.
A piece of furniture that has retained its main part – the frame – is subject to repair, so it is not advisable to devote time and effort to a completely collapsed base.
Filler. | The first place in terms of wear is the filler. A sagging sofa that has been in the living room or hallway for many years does not surprise anyone. |
Upholstery. | The upholstery often deteriorates. Especially if the furniture is used intensively and the material is not durable enough. In this case, they re-upholster the sofa with their own hands, giving preference to higher quality fabrics. |
Spring block. | In addition, the shock-absorbing part of the sofa - the spring block and transformation mechanisms - must be repaired or replaced. |
To understand how to repair a sofa at home, you need to carefully study the properties of each component part and how to restore, update or replace them.
Common mistakes when doing DIY repairs
- The first and most common mistake when repairing a sofa with a foam block is the wrong choice of replacement material. Foam rubber that is too thick or, conversely, too thin will not fit correctly into the frame, the upholstery will sag or become overly stretched and will tear very quickly.
- The second mistake is not replacing the packing in pieces, but in pieces: it will sag faster than the whole piece.
- The third is incorrect cutting of foam rubber. It must be cut strictly according to the old pattern or by taking precise measurements. Attempts to trim the padding already in the frame are fraught with unnecessary trimming.
- When repairing a spring sofa, the sharp ends of the wire or the new spring are not always bent inward. Because of such negligence, the felt or foam backing quickly breaks, and the sharp end begins to dig into anyone who sits on an unsuccessfully replaced spring.
- After repair, the sofa must be assembled, but this is more difficult to do than to disassemble. Not everyone is familiar with the design of furniture, so after repairs the craftsmen are faced with the problem of how to put it all back together. To prevent such a mistake, you should photograph or write down all stages of disassembly and places where parts are attached.
How to properly repair a sofa is written here.
We determine the type of sofa layout and the source of its breakdown
A visual inspection will help determine the source of the sofa breakdown. If the furniture cannot be laid out or gets stuck when the elements move out, it is necessary to remove the transformation mechanism for further repair or replacement. Creaks and sagging refer to faults in the frame or spring unit. In any case, disassembly of the structure is required, because there may be several breakdowns.
Returning to the layout mechanisms, it should be noted that not all devices break entirely; some simply require replacement of parts: rivets, springs, rollers. Thus, roll-out mechanisms are considered the most durable: “Eurobook”, “dolphin”. They rarely fail, but if there are some difficulties in retracting, you should take a closer look at the wheels on which the complementary sleeping part moves out. Folding sofas, with folding bed and accordion mechanisms, may not function well due to stretched springs, broken legs or deformed hinges. It is difficult to detect the breakdown of some parts, because they are small and located inside the structure. To eliminate it, you will need a complete disassembly of the sofa and its thorough diagnosis. Folding models, such as “book”, “click-click”, are devoid of small, complex details. Their main cause of failure is wear of the mechanism, and loosening of the fastenings is also likely.
If the folding device is completely broken, it should be replaced with a new one of the same type. It is impossible to place furniture with a different mechanism, even if it has a similar mechanism, because it can cause deformation of the frame, or it may not fit in size.
