Do-it-yourself wicker chair manufacturing technology

Required materials and tools

To make a rocking chair yourself, you will need to prepare the following:

  • Sheets of plywood.
  • Wooden beam (length - 53 cm).
  • Jigsaw or grinder.
  • Set of wood saws (saw blade ranging from 50 to 105 mm).
  • A hand router or disc sander with attachments of different grits (you can use regular sandpaper).
  • Measuring tape and pencil.
  • Electric drill with wood drill bits.
  • Screws, nuts, washers.
  • Sintepon.
  • Thick fabric for upholstery.
  • Furniture stapler, glue.
  • Wood paint, varnish.

Since plywood has different thicknesses, the appropriate tool is selected for cutting a specific material. Sheets up to 1.5 mm thick are cut with a sharpened knife. Sheets up to 6 mm - with a jigsaw, and thicker ones - with a jigsaw or grinder.

Tools for working with plywood are selected taking into account the thickness of the material

Start with a template

1. On a sheet of 6-mm hardboard or MDF board, draw the outline of the sidewall, enlarging it according to the scale grid (Fig. 4). Cut out the template and sand it to shape, then drill pilot holes in it.

TOOLS FOR HOME AND GARDEN, HANDCRAFTS, ETC. PRICES VERY LOW

2. Cut two pieces of plywood measuring 475x700 mm for the sidewalls (A) and transfer the contours of the template onto them.

Cut out each side panel with a jigsaw, leaving a small allowance on the outside, attach the template with double-sided tape and trim the edges of the plywood with a copy cutter. Drill pilot holes in the side panel as shown in photo A.

Process the second side panel (A) in the same way. After removing the template, make counterbores in the guide holes (see picture “Detailed fork”). Remember that the sides must be mirror copies of each other. Route the fillets along the edges. Quick tip! Once you've made each piece, sand it with 150-grit sandpaper. It's much easier and more convenient to sand before assembly.

Design Features

Before starting work, you need to familiarize yourself with possible design options, operating features, and evaluate your strengths in carpentry or plumbing.

Signs by which you can classify hand-made rocking chairs:

  1. For apartments, private houses, street. The option for apartment buildings should be silent, small in size, and marks on the floor from the rocking chair are unacceptable. In this case, you can make a pendulum rocking chair with your own hands. In private homes, any size is allowed that fits the overall design of the room. The main requirement for a garden look is weather resistance.
  2. Material of manufacture: classic wood, avant-garde metal or plastic for the street.
  3. Permitted weight, which must correspond to the weight of the user.
  4. Structural solutions.

The first three points are easy to determine, but the fourth should be dealt with in more detail.

Rocking chairs made of wood on radius runners are the easiest option to manufacture. The simplicity of the profile of the arcs (skis, rocker arms) makes the rocking smooth, but in this case you cannot get a large amplitude. Tipping is prevented by a low center of gravity of the seat, installation of restrictive crossbars or cutouts along the edges of the runners.

A rocking chair made from a profile pipe often has skis of variable curvature - with a smaller radius in the center and a larger one at the edges. This design prevents tipping over at large amplitudes.

The “nirvana” profile promotes a smooth rise from the chair, which is especially important for older people

A DIY plywood rocking chair can be made with ellipse-shaped sides, which promotes smoothness, but does not protect against tipping over at maximum deflection. To prevent “accidents,” models are equipped with limiter crossbars, the front of which serves as a support for the legs.

Pendulum structures on bearings have a fixed base - only the seat swings. The option is optimal for apartments, since there is no noise from runners rubbing against the floor, which does not damage the coating. A drawing of a chair with a pendulum mechanism for self-production is not difficult to find.

Multifunctional “3 in 1” models are suitable for large rooms; they allow you to use the chair as a stationary chair, swing with a small amplitude, or lie like in a hammock. The designs are difficult to manufacture and bulky, so such models are often purchased ready-made.

Types of rocking chairs

Rocking chairs can be divided into several categories depending on the purpose of use or the material from which they are made. But there is also a certain classification of such chairs, according to which rocking chairs are divided into several types depending on their design features.

How to make a rocking chair with your own hands (photos, drawings, dimensions)

Let's look at the main types of products:

  • Classic rocking chairs on regular runners are in harmony with both modern and classic styles. Manufacturing technology does not require extensive experience in furniture production, but the basics of practice must be present. The runners swing smoothly with a small radius, but with strong swing there is a risk of tipping over.

These chairs are made with a low seat for a more stable position.

  • Rocking chairs on runners with bumpers. If a classic chair needs to be made with an average (normal) seat height, it is recommended to equip the arches with bumpers - the runners are designed so that the ends are curved in the opposite direction.

In this version, the arches prevent the chair from turning over, but getting up from the chair is uncomfortable and hard due to the presence of these bumpers.

  • Rockers with elliptical arches - chairs guarantee a soft, gentle rocking, but with a large swing there is a risk of tipping over, because of this it is recommended to equip them with bumpers, as in the previous version. For garden plots, we offer the option of elliptical rocking chairs with an awning, which prevents tipping over.

A rocking chair can be small and neat.

  • Multifunctional rocking chairs 3 in 1 - when sitting down, it looks like a standard chair for level sitting; when tilting back, the runners switch to rocking mode; when reclining further, the chair turns into a lounger.

However, visually such a chair looks bulky and the process of switching from one function to another is inconvenient; sharp jerks of the body are required.

Having considered the main options for chairs, if you have no experience in furniture production, we recommend taking a closer look at the classic version; making a rocking chair is not as difficult as it might seem.

Having decided on the model, it is important to decide on the materials.

Rocking chair made of wicker: how to make?

The first thing that comes to mind when you start doing something with your own hands is the question of purchasing the necessary materials and tools for the work. In this particular case, the rocking chair must be very light, mobile and the design must be particularly flexible, which can only be achieved after using appropriate materials. Someone can make it from metal, but this process will be too long, expensive and, most importantly, will require special tools, which will require additional money. An option made from plywood will be cheap, but not attractive enough. Therefore, the most rational option is a vine, which will make a good rocking chair. After all, this material is light and durable.

It is better and more convenient to connect the parts using PVA glue. It will be more convenient to perform such an operation in a vice. Then tighten the screws tighter and tightly wrap the joint with a rubber band so that the parts to be glued have the opportunity to stick well to each other. This tourniquet can be removed after three hours. Thus, you will have two parts of the future frame. The third part, which is trapezoidal in shape, must also be assembled by hand. After these three elements have dried, you can move on to connecting them together. To do this, you should stock up on screws and a hand screwdriver. This will eliminate the possibility of turning the screws, which often happens when working with an electric or automatic screwdriver. It is more convenient to take a screwdriver with a short handle.

Now connect the side posts to the intermediate trapezoidal piece. To organize the backrest for furniture such as a rocking chair made of wicker, you need to use a cross-shaped piece, again made of wicker. It should be secured between two sides. Then proceed to strengthen the U-shaped elements and begin installing the front beam. Some curved parts may have bow tensioners. They are needed to ensure that the shape of the parts is maintained in its original form during transportation. Before installing the front beam, it is recommended to remove the bow tensioner on it.

Now you can install a wicker seat on the resulting place. However, before this you should partially braid the frame. For this process, prepare universal PVA glue, a brush, a sponge and a stationery awl. The prepared willow tape needs to be soaked for no more than 1 minute, and you can start working. During the weaving process, the tape should, if necessary, be moistened with a sponge dipped in water.

The next task is to install the lumbar piece. The beam tensioners can only be removed once the part is attached to a suitable location. By turning the boom, you can adjust the degree of alignment of the parts being fastened together. Then PVA glue is applied to one of the surfaces to be glued, after which the parts are screwed in with screws and the gluing area is immediately tightened with the existing rubber band in order to ensure a tighter pressing of the surfaces being glued to each other. This operation is performed in no more than 3 minutes, since superglue hardens quickly when used to glue dry wood. First, one side is glued, and only then can we proceed to the other.

Next, assemble and install the support element to the back of the chair, which is installed last. The main thing you need to pay attention to here is that the connection between the backrest and the armrest is well secured. When all the parts are glued, all that remains is to tighten the screws on those parts of the frame where the back is attached. At this point, the self-made rocking chair made from wicker is considered complete. All that remains is to coat it with alkyd furniture varnish. It will strengthen the structure and improve the appearance.

Materials

The production of wicker furniture is very common in the world. Such products are formed from various materials, among which the most popular are:

  1. Vine. This product is young shoots of willow of small thickness. The material perfectly withstands moisture, which allows the chairs to be used outdoors. Products made from wicker are especially popular in our country, as it is a fairly affordable material.
  2. Bamboo is comparable in strength to hardwood. The furniture tolerates moisture very well and is also durable.
  3. Seaweed. The furniture is woven from special plants that grow in the Pacific Ocean. Seaweed chairs are pleasant to the touch and completely safe for humans. The material does not cause allergies, which is why the cost of products made from it is very high. Seaweed products belong to the elite class.
  4. Rattan is the shoots of a palm tree that can grow up to 600 m in length. The material is completely environmentally friendly, which affects the cost of the chairs.
  5. Artificial rattan. This product is a plastic tape with silk threads placed inside it. Artificial rattan chairs are durable and have a low price.

Manufacturing materials

Before you begin manufacturing and assembling a rocking chair, you need to decide on the design, dimensions and materials of its manufacture.

As for the materials for making the frame, it can be made from:

  1. Photo 3Metal.
Such products are highly durable. They can be decorated with forged elements to add aristocracy. You can place metal furniture in any room: living room, bedroom, veranda. The metal product can withstand weight up to 300 kg.

  2. Rattan. The wicker model has an elegant openwork design. Rattan products are found in country houses and dachas. Their advantages include: the ability to withstand heavy weight, environmental friendliness and safety, long service life of more than 15 years, strength and reliability of the design.

  3. Photo 4Tree.
Wooden structures are the most common. They are able to decorate any room interior or courtyard exterior with their noble and elegant appearance. It is important to choose the right wood here. The ideal option would be: pine needles, oak, larch .

  4. Willows, vines. Such rocking chairs are in particular demand. The material has a unique composition that provides furniture items with high wear resistance. You can weave a rocking chair with your own hands. To do this, you need to choose a suitable scheme and stock up on consumables. The advantages of wicker furniture include its light weight, compact size and high strength.
  5. Plywood. She is easy and pleasant to work with. It pleases with its long service life, naturalness and the ability to make products of any design.
  6. Profile pipe. The features of the material include: low weight, strength and resistance to stress, ease of use (PVC pipes are assembled into interesting designs), and affordable cost of the material.

Some models of chairs are decorated with textile upholstery:

  • Natural leather. It is durable, wear-resistant, and resistant to negative factors.
  • Eco-leather. The material has an affordable price, a wide selection of color palettes, and practicality.
  • Faux leather. It is characterized by low cost, resistance to high moisture, resistance to deformation and tearing. Dust does not collect on its surface and stains do not remain.

The process of creating a complete product

When the question arises of what kind of fastening to use to connect the legs to the runners, it is worth paying tribute to the spikes. Spikes are considered the most reliable method for solving this technical problem. Next we will describe the operating principle.

All legs must be equally drilled through the sides, taking into account the established height of three centimeters. Then a groove is made in each leg, the depth of which is 7 centimeters, and the width of the groove itself should correspond to the width of each of the runners. The chair must be placed on the runners in such a way that you can fit into the grooves all the way.

Using a marker or felt-tip pen through the opening on the leg, make 4 marks on the runners. Next, you need to drill in the fixed areas. Next, when placing the chair on the runners, wooden spikes, initially treated with glue, are inserted into all holes

It is important to ensure that the tenon passes through all the edges of the groove and the hole in the runner.

Using an old, but very popular method will allow you to achieve what is called “tight” fastening. The main thing is to wait until the glue has completely dried. But, as in any other matter, there may be some nuances, and one of them is the inappropriate thickness of the legs. If it does not allow you to make a groove of the required width in the leg, it is recommended to do the following.

  • You will need a chisel, with which you will make 4 identical grooves in the area where the legs are fixed.
  • The legs are processed according to the shape and width of the groove.
  • Next, you need to drill the runners in those areas where the grooves were made, so that the drill can pass outward, bypassing each of the walls.
  • After installing the chair in the grooves, using a marker or felt-tip pen, a mark is made on the leg through the hole on the side of the runner.
  • Finally, the chair is removed, and holes are drilled on the legs in the designated areas, after which the chair is placed back on the runners.
  • The final touch is to insert wood tenons into the prepared holes.

Based on the results of following the valuable instructions, the hand-made product is ready for active use.

Rocking chair: material and manufacturing features

Let's figure out what features this or that rocking chair may have. Initially, natural wood served as the raw material for its production. For rocking, former craftsmen came up with the idea of installing runners-skis attached to the legs - they still have not lost their relevance. The current rocking chair, in addition to everything in its design, can be equipped with bump stops or a closing rear arch, the role of which is to prevent tipping over during strong rocking.

Interesting models designed for mothers and babies who have a cradle. The most modern option is a multifunctional rocking chair, a photo of which is posted in the article; it can be transformed from a standard chair to a lounger. You can also see in the photo various design designs that are particularly original.

Materials for manufacturing today can be either wood or three-layer thick plywood, flexible plastic, metal, willow rods (vine) and polyrattan.

Preparation of material

Several types of trees are used to weave furniture items. More often it is willow (due to its wide distribution). In addition to it, hazel, broom, alder and bird cherry are used. As an option, a vine from grape or raspberry bushes is suitable.

The best time to collect raw materials begins with the arrival of cold weather and ends with the onset of a thaw. At this time, the sap inside the tree does not move and the material is easily processed. Harvested vines are kept outdoors in a vertical position for 3-5 days.

The material is sorted based on the purpose of the rods. To make the frame of the structure, a vine with a diameter of up to 4 cm is used, for weaving - 0.5-1 cm.

Raw material processing

Weaving from wicker is possible after the harvested material has undergone certain preparation. The order is as follows:

  1. Water is boiled in a metal container.
  2. The prepared rods are lowered into the vat and boiled for 10-12 hours.

  3. The bark is removed from stems treated in hot water.
  4. A thin vine is cut with a splitter into several strips (shreds). A cut is made at one end of the rod into which the stake is inserted. Using this tool, the vine is split into 3-4 strips.
  5. The tires are pulled through a press, resulting in them being the same size and appearance.
  6. Thick welded rods are installed in pre-prepared templates, which are made in full size in accordance with the drawing.
  7. Making a template is easy. A frame pattern is applied to a wood surface (preferably chipboard). In accordance with the diagram, wooden cylinders or pipes are fixed to the base. The frame rods will be bent around these fastenings.
  8. The vines curved in the template are connected to each other for a while using bars or strong thread.
  9. The frame with ties and thin wicker bars are placed in a drying chamber.

The complete drying period lasts about 72 hours. After this, they begin to assemble the rocking chair.

Peculiarities

Wicker furniture has been known to man for a very long time. But recently its popularity has increased sharply. It began to be used almost everywhere - from home to large restaurants. Several significant advantages of such products should be highlighted:

  1. Environmental friendliness. This applies to almost all types of such structures, since the materials used in their manufacture do not emit harmful substances into the external environment. But you should understand that if the chair is painted, then this may be one of the ways to doubt its high quality.
  2. Durability. The service life of such a chair exceeds 5 years. But these parameters depend only on the material used and production technology.
  3. Strength. Almost all types of chairs can withstand significant loads. This can be said about both rattan and natural wicker. It should also be noted that it is highly resistant to moisture. The chairs can be used both indoors and outdoors (terraces, balconies, etc.).
  4. Easy to care for. To ensure that the chair retains its beautiful appearance for as long as possible, you should periodically wipe it with a slightly damp cloth and remove dust. This will increase the service life by several years.
  5. Light weight.
