How to choose a quality sofa for daily sleep

The first thing you need to do for a strong and healthy night's rest is to properly organize your sleeping area. One of the main roles in this matter is played by the purchase of a sofa. And if for the interior of a room its appearance is primarily important, the quality of sleep is influenced by many more factors. In order not to make a mistake, you need not to make a mistake with the size, choose the right filling, upholstery, and even stay within the planned budget. The task is not easy. Therefore, when choosing a sofa for sleeping, it is better to take the advice of professionals who are familiar first-hand with all the nuances of this matter.

How to choose a good size sofa for sleeping?

For a comfortable sleep, it would be nice for one person to have a bed 140 cm wide and 190-200 cm long. For two people - from 160 cm wide and 190-200 cm long. But when purchasing, it is also important to check whether it is comfortable to lie on the unfolded sofa and whether there is enough space.

The size of the entire structure also matters during installation: you need to check whether the furniture will fit into the doorway. A damaged door, a scratched wall and a new sofa are hardly what the user expects to see after purchasing and delivering a piece of furniture.

What is the best way to fold out a sofa?

Not only the ease of use of the product, but also its service life depends on the transformation mechanism. Today there are dozens of variations of folding sofas on the market, some of which can be used for daily use, others as a “guest” option. It is worth noting that the mechanism also has a partial impact on the cost of the sofa. So, how to choose a sofa bed for daily use?

Books and Eurobooks

The book sofa has been familiar to many of us since childhood. Once upon a time, such sofas were in every home. To decompose such a structure, you need to:

  • raise the part of the sofa intended for the seat up;
  • tilt it back until it clicks;
  • unfold the sofa.

The principle of the Eurobook is simpler. To use it you need:

  • pull part of the sofa towards you;
  • lower the backrest into the vacant space.

A sofa-book can be difficult to use, since unfolding it requires some physical effort. It is much easier to choose a Eurobook model.

Sofa Alba

Accordion-type structures

Sofas with this mechanism have a fairly large sleeping area. The principle of their folding resembles an accordion. To do this, simply pull the seat forward. Often such sofas are equipped with spacious boxes for linen, which is very convenient for small apartments.

Roll-out sofa

These models have another part on wheels hidden under the seat. To unfold such a sofa, you need to:

  • pull out the lower part (usually a special loop is used for this purpose);
  • lift the mechanism up and lock it.

Laying out such a product is easy and simple. The whole process takes a couple of minutes. Both traditional and corner models can be equipped with withdrawable mechanisms. The size of the bed depends on the size of the product itself.

Sofa shape for daily use

Of the variety of shapes for daily sleep, from the point of view of practicality (unfolding every day), straight and angular models are more suitable.

Direct

economical in terms of organizing space: small when folded and spacious when unfolded. Folds forward, suitable for two people.

Corner

sofa beds are larger in size even when folded. But for sleeping they are considered as comfortable as possible - the best alternative to a bed. This is because when unfolded, corner models provide more space for relaxation, and this is the key to a comfortable and cozy sleep.

Modular, semicircular, island models are also interesting and have their advantages, but are not suitable for daily sleep. These are options for living rooms and halls.

Which option is better to choose?

For health and convenience, it is important to choose the ideal sleep model that will suit all parameters. A person spends a third of his life sleeping. If you sleep on uncomfortable, low-quality furniture, this will eventually manifest itself as pain in the back, legs and neck. Your health will worsen and insomnia will appear.

Mechanisms of transformation

There are several transformation mechanisms. You can choose a “Eurobook”, there is an “accordion” on sale, as well as “dolphin” and “click-clack”. And some people will like the “clamshell” or “lit”.

After unfolding, the sofa turns into a large, wide sleeping place with a comfortable mattress and pillows.

  1. The book has a stable place to sleep and a linen drawer. Disadvantages: it is inconvenient to lay out, marks may remain on the floor.
  2. The accordion becomes many times wider after the transformation. He has a large linen drawer. Cons: It's awkward to lay out on carpet. The mechanism must be lubricated frequently.
  3. Dolphin is missing a linen drawer. Pros: convenient, easy to use. Large sleeping place.
  4. Click-clack. Pros: low cost, reliable clamshell, durable mechanism. Disadvantages: small size, sometimes there is no back, when transforming it needs to be moved away from the wall.
  5. The folding bed is easy to repair if it breaks. It's as easy to unfold as it is to assemble. Cons: The sleeping area is uneven. The case is slightly wobbly.

The accordion transformation mechanism is perfect for the living room and is quite inexpensive and convenient.
In all respects, an “accordion”, which has large dimensions and is easy to transform, is best suited for sleeping. The mattress takes on the shape of a body. A person will not feel pain in his muscles and back in the morning. Useful for patients with scoliosis.

Filler

Low-quality and cheap foam rubber is often used. The consultant will give all the information about the “insides” of the furniture. Cheap foam rubber loses strength over time. You will have to change the sofa, spending additional money.

Furniture with an orthopedic mattress is expensive. But the advantages are worth any cost: sleeping on such a filler is comfortable. A person will no longer be tormented by insomnia and pain in the spine.

Sofas with spring blocks are even more expensive. They are better for sleeping than foam rubber and other fillers.

The right choice is furniture with a spring block. Expensive, but reliable, convenient and practical.

Upholstery material

There are different upholstery options. For a restful sleep, a sofa upholstered in natural fibers is ideal. If you choose the leather option, you may be disappointed and slip onto the floor in your sleep. It is uncomfortable to sleep on such furniture. Upon contact with the body, the skin will begin to stick.

Upholstery material should be as natural as possible

Wear resistance level

With the right choice (natural upholstery, spring block, durable frame along with an orthopedic mattress), the sofa will last a long time. The furniture will last until the mattress sag or the seams come apart. The average service life is 15 years.

Frame

The frame is the main component of sleeping furniture

A high-quality sofa is equipped with a durable frame. Furniture often undergoes transformation, so you should consult with the seller before purchasing.

A suitable option is oak, birch, pine needles treated with varnish. A metal structure is suitable. But it has a drawback: the likelihood of “creaking” when used. Another option is welded metal structures, including corner ones. Durable material that will last for many years.

Another choice is the option made from bars. It is called a combined “skeleton”. The frame contains materials: wood, chipboard, metal. This option is budget-friendly in price, but its service life is short.

The most durable sofa frame is the metal version

Additional items

In its original form, the furniture should not be huge due to the frame and other components. When unfolded, it takes up minimal space. Good size: 2*2.5 m. It is also important to consider the buyer's taste, the interior of the room and the surface area.

To avoid discomfort and back pain during sleep, the sofa should exceed the length of 20 cm of a person’s height.

It is necessary to talk to a consultant in advance so that he can select the appropriate option with an orthopedic base. These options are easy to use. They are made of strong wood. It's comfortable to sleep on them.

Transformation mechanisms: which one is better for every day?

There are a lot of mechanisms for transforming sofas, but we will consider only those that are appropriate for everyday sleep.

Accordion

Equipped with an additional module behind the back.

How does it work:

The folding principle is similar to an accordion. The seat must be pulled forward and the backrest must be placed on the same plane.

Advantages:

Compact when folded, but at the same time there can be a fairly spacious place to relax.

Nuances:

It is better to install in medium and spacious rooms. For everyday use, pay attention to the frame: solid metal with wood armor will be the most durable in use.

Dolphin

The principle of operation is similar to a dolphin jump. Also called kangaroo. It is also used in corner sofas with an ottoman, less often in straight ones.

How does it work:

the platform rolls out and rises to form a single space.

Advantages:

Compact when folded, a model with an increased level of comfort.

Nuances: criterion

reliability of the mechanism - quality of manufacture and functioning of the elevator element.

Book

The simplest and most classic mechanism. Known to many from Soviet times.

How does it work:

The seat needs to be raised and lowered together with the backrest. To decompose, it is moved away from the wall.

Advantages: comfortable

and durable due to the simplicity of the mechanism, it can be equipped with a drawer at the bottom for storing things.

Nuances:

To unfold it, you need to move the sofa. This can be difficult for older people, women and children. If the assembly is poor, you may feel a depression between the halves of the sofa, which creates discomfort.

Eurobook

An improved version of the book.

How does it work:

The seat does not rise, but moves forward and falls along with the backrest.

Advantages:

no effort required to unfold, the mechanism is durable and lightweight, there can be a drawer for storing linen and other things.

Nuances:

2 pillows installed tightly can be used as a backrest.

Draw-out model

Another name is telescope. Modern mechanism with easy use.

How does it work:

Structurally it is 3 parts (back + 2 seats). The lower part needs to be pulled out and the resulting platform filled with mattress parts.

Advantages:

strength, compactness.

Nuances:

low location of the sleeping place, which is not always convenient for older people.

Choosing a frame

A sofa for sleeping is furniture for use every day. The frequency of operation imposes certain obligations on it, and one of them is the ability to withstand significant loads (from 200-300 kg and above). Also, the frame must be made of well-dried material (if wood), without sound during use. Execution materials can be as follows:

  • Wood
    - beech, oak, birch, walnut. The wood should be dry and smooth, without knots and various kinds of potholes.
  • Metal
    - if you choose a metal frame, it is recommended to opt for welded options. Bolted ones are also produced, but it is important to consider that they will need to be tightened and no one can guarantee the absence of squeaking.
  • In terms of cost, many choose a combination of wooden blocks and chipboard. But often sofas for daily use are not made in this way, just like from pure chipboard.

Choosing a filler

They are divided into 2 large groups: spring and synthetic.

Spring

blocks are considered options with pronounced orthopedic properties. Yes, they can creak and wear out over time, but this is the fate of any furniture. Here it is important to give preference to high-quality fillers. The spring group includes:

  • Dependent blocks, the name of which comes from the direct dependence of the springs on each other: when one is pressed, the others begin to move. Pros: low price. Cons: springs may stretch; if the second person lies down, the first one will definitely feel it.
  • Independent blocks are created on the principle that each spring has its own fabric cover into which it is sewn. Pros: orthopedic effect, long service life, repetition of body shape, comfort. Disadvantages - considerable cost.

Synthetic

fillers can be made of latex, padding polyester, foam rubber, silicone. The last three are hardly suitable for daily use: they are comfortable, but over time they sag, need to be replaced, and the user begins to feel a solid base. Latex, on the contrary, retains its shape well, is considered hypoallergenic, but is more expensive.

Important!

The filler determines the hardness of the area, so consider your preferences, health, and spinal condition before purchasing.

Which frame is considered the best?

A sofa for daily sleep should be durable and able to withstand fairly intense loads. That is why when choosing a product, great attention is paid to the frame. Today, manufacturers offer the following model options:

  • Metal frames - most often stainless steel is used as the basis. Such products are incredibly durable, resistant to a wide variety of impacts and are ideal for daily use. The only drawback of a metal frame is its fairly high price. It is also important to consider that models with metal inside will have quite a lot of weight.
  • Natural wood is durable and environmentally friendly products, distinguished not only by functionality and durability, but also by high cost.
  • Chipboard - such products are rarely used as models for regular sleep. Such sofas are quite cheap, but they have a lot of disadvantages. Firstly, particle board is fragile and breaks quickly if not used carefully. Secondly, such sofas cannot boast of resistance to high loads.
  • Products on frames made of multi-layer plywood - products made of multi-layer plywood are notable for their low cost. They are much stronger than the previous option and can act as a daily sleeping place.

Upholstery material

The external component is important not only in terms of design, but also quality. When purchasing a sofa for daily sleep, it is important to consider that the upholstery is easy to clean, pleasant to the touch, quite dense and wear-resistant. For permanent use, it is recommended to choose mixed fabrics such as tapestry, matting, chenille, jacquard.

  • The matting
feels like burlap, is durable, has a high level of strength, and is not subject to stretching. Easy to clean - both wet and dry.
  • Jacquard
does not fade, will not wear out, looks very presentable in appearance, and can be cleaned dry. Direct exposure to UV rays is not recommended. The downside is the high price.
  • Chenille
is beautiful in appearance and looks quite expensive, feels pleasant to the touch, and the fabric itself is soft. Can be cleaned dry/wet; for long-term use, regular maintenance is required.
  • Tapestry is
an inexpensive and practical option. If water- and dust-repellent impregnations were used in the manufacture of the fabric, the upholstery will be durable and resistant to stains.

What you should know if you choose other upholstery options:

  • Leather and eco-leather are aesthetically pleasing in appearance, but you need to take into account that the bed linen will slip one way or another, and this is not the most comfortable option for daily sleep.
  • Modern velor and flock are more suitable for upholstery of living room sofas, because they wear out from frequent touches. With everyday use, the original appearance will be retained only for 2-3 years.
  • Upholstery containing admixtures of natural wool can be itchy - and this is a disadvantage in terms of sleep comfort.

Upholstery color:

  • The pattern on the upholstery eliminates minor stains.
  • One tone is a trend in recent years, especially bright colors, but you need to take into account the level of soiling of this option.
  • The upholstery option is a removable cover if the sofa is purchased for a child when dirt is inevitable. This way you can remove the upholstery and wash it at any time.

Sofa style

Classic remains out of fashion. But in non-classical interiors you need to purchase more modern models of sofas in order to harmoniously fit them into the thoughtful design of the room. To ensure that the sofa is not only a place to sleep, but also a full-fledged piece of modern interior design, you can pay attention to styles such as:

  • Modern
    — furniture interestingly combines metal and wooden elements, has many shapes and upholstery options.

A good example is the Belfast sofa. Available in a variety of colors: from classic gray, black, brown, beige to bright green, blue, yellow. The transformation mechanism is Eurobook, the filler is hypoallergenic polyurethane foam, the hardness is below average, equipped with a linen drawer, the frame is made of wood. External attractiveness and restraint allow you to harmoniously fit the sofa into a modern bedroom, equipping a full-fledged and cozy sleeping area.

  • Loft
    - mobile furniture that is also functional. The upholstery is in most cases plain. The sofa can be equipped with massive armrests, a minibar, an open shelf and more.

When choosing a sofa for a loft-style room, pay attention to the Cadmon model. The sofa is presented in gray color. Thanks to the convenient transformation mechanism - the Eurobook - a user of any age will not experience any difficulties with unfolding. A Bonnell spring block was used as a filler. The frame is made of natural wood, and additional functionality is provided by the presence of a storage box. The hardness level is medium. External practicality and beautiful appearance make the model in demand among lovers of stylish solutions.

  • Eco-style
, so popular today, is distinguished by streamlined shapes, muted tones, and natural materials.
In this regard, the Aria sofa
. The length of the model is 188 cm, the sleeping area is 105 cm, so it is suitable for a child’s room or for a miniature person. The transformation mechanism - the book, frame and legs are made of natural durable beech, the upholstery is made of reliable and very beautiful jacquard. Polyurethane foam was used as a filler. Easily converts from a sofa to a bed and fits perfectly into country interiors.

The best sofas with foam filling

In addition to spring blocks, foam rubber and padding polyester can be used as filler for the sofa. Since foam rubber can be of varying hardness, a logical solution would be to abandon springs altogether and make the entire mattress from this material. Such sofas hold their shape quite well and accurately follow the contours of the human figure.

However, there is a significant drawback that buyers should take into account - the rapid loss of foam rubber’s original shape. Over time, the mattress gets confused, sags and does not fulfill its orthopedic functions - the hard base of the sofa will be felt through it. Although, if you use high-quality foam rubber with a well-calculated density, it will last for a long time without any significant changes.

Despite the fact that some experts do not recommend using sofas with foam filling for daily sleep, such furniture is often used. First of all, consumers are attracted by the price, which is significantly lower than that of sofas with an independent spring block.

Sofa MOON 021 N32Sb

Wall-mounted sofa bed, folding out using an “accordion” transformation mechanism. Polyurethane foam furniture sheets of increased elasticity are used as a spring block, ideally following the contours of the human body and supporting it in the position necessary for proper rest.

The base of the sofa is made of a metal frame, on which orthopedic armor covered with fabric, assembled from bent-laminated birch, is attached. Faux suede, fabric or faux leather is used as outer covering.

When folded, the sofa measures 173 cm in width, 108 cm in depth, and 90 cm in height, of which 44 cm is the seat. The dimensions of the bed after unfolding are 164 by 206 cm.

For maximum hygiene, the mattresses come with a removable cover that can be easily removed before unfolding.

Tips for choosing a sofa for sleeping

To ensure that the sofa is not an ownerless piece of furniture, but a full-fledged place to sleep, when choosing, consider:

  1. Stiffness - based on personal preference, spinal condition, weight of the user or users.
  2. Frame quality - regardless of financial preferences, choose models made of durable materials (wood, metal). This way, you even risk saving: you won’t have to purchase new furniture after several years of use.
  3. Transformation mechanism - it is not recommended to choose options for living rooms. Everyday sleep requires the presence of suitable mechanisms such as a book or Eurobook, accordion or dolphin, or a roll-out model. The rest, no matter how high-quality they are, can simply become loose from frequent use, and repair or replacement is also an additional financial investment.
  4. The presence of additional elements, for example, storage boxes, wide armrests, folding tables, small niches. All this expands the functionality of the furniture and creates additional comfort, and in some cases saves space.
  5. The quality of the upholstery - discomfort when sitting on the sofa should not disturb you while sleeping.
  6. Design is less important than the quality of the product itself, but in the overall picture it plays an important role. It’s bad if the furniture quickly gets boring due to the wrong color chosen (for example, too bright) or a style that doesn’t suit the interior.

To choose the right furniture, explore it practically: lie on the sofa, if possible; check whether it is convenient to unfold and fold it, and whether the mechanisms creak.

In the divano.ru catalog you will find many options for sofas for bedrooms. Convenient search filters will allow you to select a model based on all characteristics. Set the desired style, price, dimensions, color, material, filler, components, manufacturer, transformation mechanism, and the system itself will select models based on your preferences. And regular discounts on certain options also allow you to save significantly on your purchase.

All these practical and constructive tips will allow you to buy a truly functional and beautiful sleeping place that will delight you with both comfort and stylish appearance.

Mechanism reliability

A convenient and durable folding sofa mechanism is one of the most important factors that you should rely on when choosing. It must be taken into account that the furniture will be folded and unfolded every day, which can negatively affect the service life of low-quality mechanisms.

Let's look at what sleep models manufacturers offer and how they differ from each other.

Book

Standard and most popular mechanism.
It is quite reliable as it consists of only two moving parts. The structure can be folded and unfolded without assistance, which is very convenient. However, in some cases such sofas have to be moved away from the wall, since they become wider when unfolded.

Accordion

This is a good and convenient mechanism designed for high loads. To unfold the furniture, you need to pull a special ribbon, and all three parts will move forward one by one, forming a full-fledged bed. The headboard remains in its place, the sleeping place consists of a backrest, a pillow that is located under it, and the seat itself.

The surface is smooth, the seams are not felt, but if the furniture is often used for gatherings, over time, sagging may form in their place.

Eurobook

An improved version of the classic model, in which folding is accomplished by moving the seat forward and installing the backrest in its place.

The mechanism of the sofa is quite simple, therefore durable, the sleeping area is flat and wide. However, over time, the padding can be pressed through, and the indentation between the parts of the structure can be felt during sleep.

Pantograph (Puma or Tik-Tak)

Almost the same model as the previous one, but it unfolds even easier, based on the principle of walking; even a child can handle this mechanism. The sofa is quite durable, designed for heavy loads, and it does not damage the floor covering with its legs. The cost of such furniture is high, but it is justified by its excellent quality.

Books, cots and corners

Those who are not inclined to tinker with folding mechanisms for a long time should pay attention to the “book” and “clamshell” models, which anyone can easily handle. The first model is divided into two types: classic and eurobook

The first model is divided into two types: classic and eurobook.

The improved version (“euro”) is more stable, and its mechanism is simple and reliable. If a person intends to sleep on such a sofa alone, then there is no need to move it apart; it is wide enough when assembled. The back of the Eurobook is covered just as elegantly as the front part, so this model can be installed anywhere in the room.

The only problem is that not every type of this design has wheels. But if you still unfold the sofa, then you cannot place it close to the wall; some intermediate space will be required.

There are also two types of “folding beds”, the so-called “American” and “French”. Both slide apart in much the same way as ordinary simple folding beds. Only in the first case you won’t have to remove the parts to do this. In both cases, the “night” surface is removed during the day and no one sits on it.

Corner sofas are the least likely to undergo various transformations, and at least for this reason they are reliable, and also practical and functional. Inside it there is usually a “casket” for bed linen.

Advantages and disadvantages of using a sofa for sleeping

Is it acceptable to relax on the sofa every day? Everyday sleep is possible, especially if this furniture is equipped with an orthopedic mattress and a strong device.

The advantages include:

  • space efficiency in small rooms;
  • fast transformation;
  • Possibility to install a sofa in the living room.

Disadvantages may be:

  • Some sleeping samples tear up the floor covering and dent the kilims.
  • Sofas need to be unfolded and assembled when the bed is quickly covered with a blanket.
  • Some types do not have space for bedding, so they will need to be placed in a closet.
  • When the sofa in the living room is dismantled, the unmade bed after sleep can be discovered by guests who unexpectedly arrive.

Therefore, before buying an orthopedic folding sofa, you should review all the advantages and disadvantages of this type of furniture. Of course, for a one-room apartment, such a purchase is the only optimal solution.

Sofas that are not suitable for every day

Some sofas are called “guest” sofas, since they are not suitable for daily relaxation; their sleeping place is only suitable for spending a few nights on it.

"French folding bed"

In the French folding sofa, the seating area is provided with removable pillows. Under them is a mattress folded like an accordion, which unfolds on metal legs like a folding bed. Such furniture has a compact body, which is good for small apartments, but it is inconvenient to sleep on it all the time: the mattress must be folded 3 times for assembly, so it is made thin. In addition, the system itself is not very reliable and durable, and with daily use it will not last long will last.

The “French folding bed” allows you to get a spacious sleeping area, but it is difficult to unfold and is not considered durable

"Sedaflex"

"Sedaflex" is a modification of the "French folding bed", the difference between this mechanism is the strength of the structure - the mattress unfolds on strong supports. The sleeping place turns out to be quite spacious, but it’s hardly very comfortable - numerous transverse joints with seams are usually felt during sleep, such a sofa is usually covered with an additional mattress. There will also be no compartment for linen in such a sofa.

Video: sofa with sedaflex mechanism

"Elf"

The “elf” mechanism allows you to adjust the position of the armrests. That is, they can be completely lowered and get a single bed, or you can organize a comfortable place to relax while reclining. Such a sofa does not take up much space and can be easily transformed, but sleeping on it every day is not the best idea: the sleeping place is small, and the seat itself is a mattress for sleeping. This is an excellent option for a guest sofa that can be easily unfolded and organized for relaxation at night.

The “Elf” mechanism allows you to get only one berth

Sofa with fold-out floor

A sofa that folds out onto the floor is a compact and lightweight option for a place to relax. If necessary, simply raise the seat and pull out the double-folded mattress. This sofa has no supports, and the soft part lies directly on the floor. There are advantages to this: a compact furniture body, the absence of complex mechanisms that can fail, as well as low cost. This is a good option for accommodating guests, but sleeping on it regularly is very uncomfortable - there is no normal back support, you have to sleep practically on the floor, which is not the best option for a permanent basis.

Sofas that fold out onto the floor have a very low sleeping area

"Recliner"

A recliner sofa is furniture with a lot of customization options. It is equipped with complex mechanisms that allow you to separately adjust the angles of the backrest and soft footrest, and most often the adjustments are made from a remote control. This option is not suitable for proper sleep. Yes, it looks solid and allows you to rest comfortably during the day, but it is impossible to transform it into a full-fledged sleeping place, not to mention the high cost.

A recliner sofa is relaxation furniture with complex adjustments.
