When decorating a room for a child, parents tend to purchase furniture made from natural materials. But in addition to the high cost, sometimes you are not satisfied with the limited choice of options. The solution would be a DIY high chair, which can be complemented with a table in the same design. The variety of models, simplicity and accessibility of production will help you create a real masterpiece.
Required materials and tools
To create a children's chair with your own hands, you will need various materials that can be easily purchased in the construction department:
- planks and bars for making a seat, frame and back;
- self-tapping screws that will fasten the parts together;
- medium-hard sandpaper.
Tools for the chair you will need:
- screwdriver;
- jigsaw;
- screwdriver;
- wood hacksaw.
When making at home, it is better to use natural materials. Plastic chairs are significantly inferior to them in terms of performance properties and other important characteristics. Firstly, they do not have high strength. Secondly, their safety for children has not been experimentally proven. Natural wood is expensive, but such children's furniture is environmentally friendly and absolutely safe for health. Beneficial properties are retained even after complete processing. The following types are preferred:
- Pine. This is a budget option. The antiseptic properties of wood are valued. The finished product is easy to paint. The disadvantages include the fact that if not properly cared for, the chair and table can swell and crack.
- Beech. Its qualities are similar to oak. Easily restored if minor damage occurs on the surface.
- Oak. Furniture for children made from this solid wood will last the longest, and it is not susceptible to rotting even with frequent contact with moisture. It retains its attractive appearance for a long time - even a very active child will not be able to scratch it.
MDF does not emit hazardous resins during operation. The material is quite durable, the average service life is 10 years (provided that nothing is dropped or hit on the surface). Therefore, when deciding to make a children’s highchair with your own hands, it is better to refuse MDF. Moreover, the cost of the finished product is only slightly lower than that of solid wood models.
Plywood is an environmentally friendly and safe material. It can be easily processed even with very fine processing, and is characterized by its low cost compared to natural wood and its long service life. The disadvantages include a limited range of applications.
Chipboard has a low cost. Disadvantages include increased flexibility and the presence of formaldehyde resins in the composition. It is not recommended to make children's furniture from such raw materials - allergic reactions may occur to it.

DIY manufacturing steps
When making a wooden chair, beginners should use step-by-step instructions with diagrams, indicating the necessary tools and materials. A detailed description will help you avoid many mistakes, as well as financial losses. You can make a transformer, a stool, or a folding chair with your own hands.
The preparation process and stages of restoring chairs at home
Transformer for feeding
Transformable children's furniture should be as stable and reliable as possible. The model is made from wooden beams and boards, the elements are fastened with dowels and screws; the tools you will need are a hacksaw and a grinder. The work is carried out in stages:
- The beams are cut in accordance with the diagram, the cuts are carefully polished.
- Curves are cut out of the boards. The easiest way to do this is on a carpentry machine, so it’s better to turn to specialists.
- At the joints, holes are made corresponding to the parameters of the dowels. The depth should not exceed 40 mm.
- The assembly of a children's chair begins with fastening the legs with the lower crossbar, and the curves are fixed on the upper one. Finished parts are connected using wood glue.
- For the seat you need 6 elements with parameters 300x250 mm, which are connected with screws and a metal strip.
To make the high chair even more comfortable, the furniture is complemented with a soft seat. To do this, you need to stick a layer of foam rubber on the back and seat, then trim the surface with textiles. Preference should be given to practical fabrics that are easy to clean from dirt.
Stool
To make a chair with your own hands, you need to prepare wooden boards or plywood, self-tapping screws, a sander, a jigsaw, and paint and varnish compounds for finishing. The work is carried out as follows:
- The material is carefully polished, sawn in accordance with the diagram, and the joints of the elements are marked.
- All edges of parts are processed with a grinding machine.
- Wood blanks are coated with stain and varnish.
- All elements are connected to each other using self-tapping screws.
Making a stool with your own hands is pretty quick. The model is considered one of the simplest, so it is suitable for beginners. Such furniture should always be placed on a flat surface, otherwise the risk of falling increases.
Traditional stools consist of a seat and legs. However, models for children are often made with a back shaped like a heart or cute cat ears.
Folding chair
Models for children often have a practical folding design. Such furniture is made from wooden boards, the parts are connected with bolts, the tools you will need are a jigsaw, a grinder, and a drill. Instructions will help you make this cute children's highchair with your own hands:
- All parts are cut out in accordance with the selected drawing. The surface is carefully polished.
- The slats are fixed to the support bars that form the seat.
- The two front legs and the back form a frame; slats are attached to the supports.
- Two crossbars are attached to the rear legs. Both frames are connected with bolts.
- The seat is fastened to the front frame using bolts screwed into specially made holes. This ensures the process of folding the structure.
Thanks to its compact size, the small folding chair can be easily stored in small spaces. If necessary, you can take it with you outdoors or on hikes.
Product dimensions
When starting to make a chair for a child with your own hands, it is important to take into account the following rules:
- When sitting on furniture, your feet should be completely flat on the floor, your legs should be bent at the knees 90 degrees.
- The back of the chair is strictly vertical and fits tightly to the base.
- The outer edge of the seat should not put too much pressure on the inside of the knee.
Children's chairs are classified according to their purpose. The first group includes models for feeding. Such products traditionally come complete with a table. Most often they have sizes:
- chair height – from 840 to 900 mm;
- back width – 450 mm;
- height of the chair to the seat – 500 mm, to the back – 700 mm;
- width along the armrests – 400 mm.
The second group is a smaller copy of adult products. Tables that correspond to the height of the furniture and the height of the child will help you determine the size.
Child's height, cm | Chair height, cm |
Less than 85 | 180 |
85-100 | 220 |
101-115 | 260 |
116-130 | 300 |
131-145 | 340 |
146-160 | 380 |
161-175 | 420 |
above 176 | 460 |
The parameters of the children's table must exactly match the dimensions of the high chair.
The seat should be able to easily withstand the load placed on it. The optimal thickness is 60 mm. It is advisable to make the connecting strips of the seat frame up to 20 cm. The legs in cross-section can have dimensions of 5 x 5 cm - such parameters will ensure sufficient stability. The recommended length of the backrest jumper bars is up to 20 cm. All dimensions, drawings, diagrams of a do-it-yourself highchair and other models must be drawn up as accurately as possible.
A model of the future chair made of thick cardboard will help determine whether the measurements were taken correctly. Another convenience is that it is easy to make any changes to make the final product as convenient as possible.
High chair for baby
Such an original chair can be made using simple drawings, or even without them, from a lightweight (715 g) material - plywood. The chair has small dimensions, namely:
- product height – 360 mm,
- height to seat – 180 mm,
- seat – 190x240 mm,
- back – 115x235 mm.
You can make a test model out of cardboard to see if a highchair of this size is suitable for your child. If this product is small, increase it by the required factor and feel free to get to work.
Materials and tools
- Plywood 8 mm thick.
- You can assemble the chair using spikes or simply screws, if desired.
- Feather drills, jigsaw.
- Sandpaper.
- PVA glue.
- Drill with screws for connecting parts.
- Clear varnish.
Operating procedure
- Based on the data or your measurements, draw a side part for the chair with a pencil on a piece of plywood.
- Drill decorative holes using feather drills. Large ones - using a jigsaw.
- To ensure that the second sidewall turns out exactly the same as the first, we place the finished part on plywood and outline it with a pencil. We cut it out the same way.
- We mark the back, seat and parts that give the chair rigidity and prevent the sides from loosening.
- When all the parts of the chair are ready, it is necessary to make them absolutely smooth, rounded, carefully sand the surfaces and especially the cut points.
- We assemble the chair using glue and fasten the joints with screws.
- At the final stage we are decorating the chair. Cover it with several coats of stain if you want it darker, or paint it a bright color and top it off with a coat of water-based varnish.
With a little imagination and your own drawings, you can change the appearance and finish of the high chair, and also make a table for a child of a similar design. Your child will appreciate it.

Selecting a design and creating a drawing
Chairs for children can be of the following models:
- Classic versions - differ from adult sizes. Structurally they have the same elements.
- Folding - characterized by a simple design, they are actively used in small apartments and dachas.
- Growing chairs require the presence of adjustment mechanisms, which allows the products to be used longer.
- Transformers - most often presented in models supplemented with feeding shelves and footrests. At the base there is a table that can later be used for games.
The last two models have the highest leg heights. This especially applies to growing chairs, which can be used from 2 to 14 years. When choosing them, it is important to carefully evaluate the quality of the design.
A wooden chair can have a solid square, rectangular or straight through back (with horizontal and vertical connecting strips) back. Such products support the spine well. You can also find the shape of a wide truncated cone.
To create a sketch and drawing, you will need to take measurements and determine the purpose of the product. You can use pencil and paper, but it is much more convenient to automate the process using specialized programs. They are convenient for creating “explosion diagrams” that will tell you how to assemble the chair.
An explosion diagram is a detailed design sketch of a product, which allows you to disassemble the chair into individual elements, estimate their number and size.
When drawing up a drawing, it is important to indicate the dimensions of each part on it. For convenience, callouts can be made on the side indicating the exact parameters of the structural elements. If you decide to use a ready-made diagram, you can adapt it to your personal needs by changing the numbers. In this case, it is necessary to strictly observe the proportions.

Decoration of the structure
Products made from natural wood require protection from external factors. Varnishing helps solve this problem. Experts recommend choosing the acrylic version of this material. It creates a coating that is not afraid of any childish pranks - spilled water, paint.
If you want to make the product more interesting, you can paint it. You should give preference to bright, but not harsh colors. Muted light green, mint green, pomegranate, coral and others are suitable.
The materials used must not contain lead, other heavy metals, or hazardous or harmful compounds. Contact with a surface treated with these paints and varnishes may cause a child’s health to deteriorate.
It is not recommended to decorate the table and chair with voluminous decor. First of all, due to the fact that it is one of the most common causes of injury to a child. The best decoration would be hand or screen painting. Appliques and drawings of fairy tale and cartoon characters are suitable for young children. Curly legs will look interesting. If the chair has a back, various figures are cut out on its surface with a jigsaw.
