Why artificial rattan is better
Natural rattan is obtained from the stems of calamus . This is a type of palm that grows in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. Those who collect blanks approach the matter very responsibly. The height of the palm tree must be at least 8 meters and this is the minimum; some species reach 300 meters in height.
To make truly high-quality rattan threads, you need to work hard. First, the bark is removed from the trunk. Then the stems are cleaned and calibrated taking into account the diameter. Then comes the critical processing stage. The raw materials are exposed to steam and dried. The process is long and expensive, which is why rattan furniture is so expensive.
Eco-friendly and durable, looks elegant and very harmoniously complements the interior
The only and main disadvantage is that the high price makes one think of a substitute. And there is one.
Artificial rattan or polyrattan looks the same, but is obscenely cheap . The reason is the composition, there is no wood in it. The threads are formed from extruded polyethylene . Its granules are placed in a special apparatus, heated, calibrated, and cooled.
Polyrottan can be any color. The line is configured automatically; just set the parameters and select the dye. The texture and section can also be selected. Everything will take no more than two hours, depending on the volume. The final cost will please even the most thrifty buyers .

Benefits and possible risks
Before starting your own business, you need to calculate all the advantages and possible risks:
Advantages | Possible risks |
Does not require maintenance, can be stored outdoors, which means it is suitable for the production of outdoor furniture. | Low profitability in areas where there are few country houses and dachas (for example, in the northernmost regions). |
The variety of textures and colors of the produced product makes it interesting for design bureaus and salons for the production of piece furniture. | Competition: there are many people who want to do such a simple task. |
Environmentally friendly and recyclable. | Crisis phenomena in the economy. |
You can offer your products not only to furniture makers, but also to manufacturers of souvenirs, accessories for baths and kitchens, and even tableware. If production develops, you can open your own furniture or design studio.
But hurry up. Since the expenses for starting a business are small and the payback is almost instantaneous, there are many people who want to start producing artificial rattan. Those who are late simply will not have time to occupy a profitable niche.
What types of artificial rattan are the most popular?
Artificial rattan differs in shape, texture and shade. With the latter, everything is clear: the trend is black, beige, gray and brown, bright colors are also in demand.
If we talk about the form, then first of all it is worth highlighting three modifications
The rod consists of polymer inserts of varying thickness and density.
Rectangular strips have a flat structure, thickness up to 12 millimeters.
crescent shape is quite common. The streamlined shape is pleasant to the touch and original.
Separately, we note, artificial rattan with imitation of tree bark . In it, polymer fibers are connected into semicircular or oval profiles. This design is usually ordered for a country house or garden, although the wood palette looks no worse in an apartment.
The weight of products made from strip is less, from crescent more. The differences are especially noticeable if the work requires rattan with a width of 9 mm or more. In this case, we recommend using “Stripe”, it is not so voluminous.
This is interestingGermany is considered to be the birthplace of poly rattan. In the mid-90s, chemists from several universities conducted research on polymers and accidentally discovered that the combination of molecules in a pair of chains was lined up in a completely new way. This is how this truly innovative material appeared. |
Important advantages of artificial rattan
Rattan made from polymer fibers is unpretentious, reliable and durable . Finished products also have the listed characteristics. For example, artificial rattan furniture can stand outside all season without anything significant happening to it. It will not fade, will not swell from rain, will not sag.
Particularly brave summer residents leave it to spend the winter on the site. In the spring they dig them out of the snowdrifts, clean them, dry them and use them again. Of course, you shouldn’t go to extremes. Any items, even those made of technorattan, should be put away in the house or garage during cold weather.
Five advantages of artificial rattan1.Inexpensive 2.Flexible 3.Strong 4.Eco-friendly 5.Practical |
Production technology has made artificial rattan a real record holder for strength. Special additives and fastening components strengthen the bonds of polymers, which ensures high wear resistance of the structure. For example, a polyrattan sofa can easily support the weight of four adults.
The strips bend easily and do not lose their shape for a long time. Small masterpieces can be made in a couple of hours. That’s why people in Chelyabinsk and other cities in our country are fond of polyrattan weaving
If you look at the finished product, pay attention to the distance between the threads. The smaller it is, the stronger the weaving. Press it with your hand. Did you feel any resistance? This means that the chosen item is really high quality. If you decide to purchase raw materials separately, follow three tips.
1. Plant the ribbon, it should not be very springy. 2. Unwind the entire reel and evaluate the uniformity of coloring. 3. Check the integrity for damage and other defects on the surface. |
Briefly about well-known manufacturers of wicker furniture for the garden
Garden wicker furniture for the garden has appeared on the domestic market relatively recently. These are mainly products of foreign (Swedish, Dutch and Chinese) companies. However, recently many domestic manufacturers have appeared that successfully compete with them.
One of the important factors when buying furniture made of artificial rattan is the quality of the weaving: the pattern must be smooth and dense, and also not be damaged.
Wicker furniture from foreign manufacturers
Furniture made from natural materials by the Swedish manufacturer KWA has been produced since 1946. It is distinguished by its stylish design, high quality and loyalty to tradition, which does not prevent the supplier from closely monitoring new trends. Currently, artificial rattan is used in production as often as raw materials from Swedish pine, while all the company's products are environmentally friendly, safe and durable.
Modern manufacturers offer a wide selection of artificial rattan garden furniture to suit every taste.
Another well-known Swedish manufacturer is Brafab. Its enterprises are located in Sweden and China. Over its eighty-year history, the company has gained a good reputation in the European and global markets. In addition to natural materials (teak, pine, natural rattan and tropical wood), the company also uses the most modern raw materials.

Brafab's exclusive development is Brafatex polymer material. Furniture made from it is not afraid of dirt, water, or aggressive exposure to sunlight. It retains its appearance both in the summer heat and in the winter cold.
A large assortment of technorattan furniture is presented by the famous company IKEA. Wicker furniture is distinguished by its distinctly Scandinavian minimalism and quite reasonable prices.
This is interesting! Despite its carefully maintained reputation as a truly Swedish company, IKEA has been a Dutch company for several years now, with its headquarters located in Delft (South Holland).
When choosing furniture from Chinese manufacturers, you need to pay attention to customer reviews in order to ensure the quality of the products before purchasing
The products of the Dutch company AZZURA, whose activities began in 1992 with the supply of furniture from Indonesia and Vietnam to Europe, are characterized by good quality. However, the company soon opened two of its own production facilities, specializing in high-quality garden furniture. The original design and environmental friendliness of the products distinguish Dutch wicker furniture from similar products from competitors.
Regarding Chinese products, you should pay special attention to reviews from other buyers. It is Chinese wicker furniture that most often emits a characteristic chemical odor, which may indicate extremely harmful additives included in its composition. For the same reason, you should not buy the cheapest products. Typically, such low costs are achieved at the expense of a serious loss of quality, which occurs with almost complete absence of government control.
The main domestic manufacturers of technorattan furniture
The largest supplier of garden wicker furniture made from artificial rattan is RAMMUS. In 1999, the company began importing German polyrattan, but for five years now RAMMUS has been specializing in the production of eco-rattan furniture made using its own formula.
According to the manufacturer, its products compare favorably with competitors' products due to their increased wear resistance, environmental friendliness and hypoallergenicity. These qualities make it suitable for use in children's and medical institutions. In addition, the products are characterized by durability and resistance to large temperature changes (from -50 to +80 °C).
The main domestic manufacturers of garden furniture made of artificial rattan are the companies MEBIUS and RAMMUS
The color range of eco-rattan from RAMMUS is distinguished by restraint and closeness to natural shades and varies from milky to anthracite and brown tones.
This company has established a full cycle of furniture production - from the manufacture of polymer rattan to the assembly of finished products and sewing of soft elements. The manufacturer guarantees high quality products at fairly reasonable prices.
Two years before the opening of RAMMUS enterprises (in 2011), another Russian company MEBIUS established its own production of artificial rattan. Furniture made from it is ergonomic, durable and environmentally friendly. It is represented by a wide range of chairs, armchairs, tables and sun loungers, as well as coffee, dining and bar sets. In addition, the manufacturer can produce a set of artificial rattan furniture to order.
The eco-rattan produced by this company is resistant to ultraviolet radiation and has an EAEU quality certificate. The colors presented in the company catalog are distinguished by restraint and gravitate toward natural colors. These are various shades of milky, beige, yellow, gray and brown tones (even rich chocolate).

This is interesting! MEBIUS garden wicker furniture was used in the TV project “Dachny Otvet”, which can be seen by looking at the photo on the company’s website.
How to use polyrattan
There are many ways to use it. “You are your own craftsman, artist and creator,” say those who have at least once tried to make a chair or other rattan furniture with their own hands.
Beginning craftsmen take both old wooden chairs and completely new plastic ones as a basis. Professionals prepare a full-fledged frame. Aluminum tubes and profiles are connected by argon welding. Some people prefer copper, but it is a bit heavy and not as malleable.
First, they draw a sketch , either on their own or find a ready-made one. It is important to know the exact dimensions, so it will be easier to select materials and you will not get confused with the location. Afterwards they make the base. As a rule, they work with pipes of diameter 20 and larger. The frame is sanded, if necessary degreased and coated with a special solution. They begin weaving as soon as they are convinced of the quality of the structure.
Beginners learn on smaller objects, ottomans, stools. Having gained experience, they move on to more serious projects. Don't be afraid of mistakes. Artificial rattan is a beneficial material in this regard; shortcomings can always be eliminated. The same goes for finished copies. I got tired of the design, bought more stripes or, on the contrary, removed the excess.
The calculated size of technorattan is kilogram . Up to 1.5 kg of strips about six millimeters thick are required per square meter of product. A compact chair requires up to 5 kg, a sofa with two chairs costs 25 kg or more.
The fashion for exclusiveness, including in the interior, opens up wide scope for creative people. Anyone can master the technique of rattan weaving. You will be surprised how easily and quickly the threads are connected. You just need to practice a little and the results will not keep you waiting.
Types of poly rattan
When choosing polyrattan wicker furniture products, it makes sense to understand the difference between types of material. The fibers are made from HDPE (low-density polyethylene) granules, polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Each type of material gives the finished furniture special characteristics that need to be taken into account:
- Polyethylene. This type of material is recyclable, which is important. It is recognized as environmentally friendly. Polyethylene polyrattan is produced from thermoplastic resin, but it is tougher compared to other types. At the same time, it is resistant to temperature changes, UV radiation and moisture, for this reason outdoor furniture is often made from it.
- Polyurethane. This is an elastic material that is resistant to cracking; products made from this raw material are best chosen for frequent use. It is not afraid of mold, as well as UV exposure. When processed, the material loses its quality, so it is not used as recycled material.
- PVC. It uses polyvinyl chloride with the addition of other substances that give the material elasticity. It is this polyrattan that is least resistant to low temperatures, so it is not suitable for use in winter. In addition, in case of increased exposure to UV radiation, it may become deformed.
