How to clean wooden furniture?

General cleaning recommendations

It is recommended to clean upholstered chairs from dust weekly. Features of care depend on the type of upholstery. Almost all materials are disliked:

  • excessive wetness;
  • aggressive chemicals;
  • long drying.

The filler is PPU (furniture foam rubber). If the upholstery allows moisture to pass through, it absorbs liquid and takes a long time to dry. Due to dampness, a favorable environment is formed for the development of pathogenic microorganisms, and an unpleasant odor appears.

Cleaning chair upholstery

When cleaning, do not forget about the frame material. For example, wooden chairs are afraid of moisture. Therefore, if water gets on the frame during the process, it must be wiped off immediately.

The varnished surface is treated with polishes and soft flannel. Occasionally, you can remove dirt with a damp cloth soaked in detergent for natural fabrics. At the end of processing, wipe dry. Any wooden surface must not be treated with abrasives, scrapers, or alkali.

How to clean different chair upholstery

To clean chairs at home as effectively as possible, it is better to use special household chemicals. Teflon-impregnated materials can be safely washed with a damp cloth. But they cannot:

  • steam;
  • subject to mechanical stress (scrape);
  • Apply alcohol and bleach to them.

Fabrics without a protective coating are treated with a steam generator, unless this contradicts the instructions.

Advice! Before cleaning, check whether the structure can be disassembled and the seat and backrest removed. In this form, the stool is easier to take out to dry.

Fabric upholstery

Textile upholstery looks impressive, but:

  • unstable to the appearance of grease and stains;
  • quickly absorbs and passes moisture into the filler;
  • takes a long time to dry.

That’s right, the following recommendations will help you clean a fabric chair at home without streaks.

  1. First, clean the seat and backrest from dust with a brush, napkin, or vacuum cleaner. In the latter case, it is better to use a compact crevice nozzle. For delicate fabrics and skin, set the suction power to minimum.
  2. Apply the product to the entire surface of the seat or backrest. Distribute the mixture evenly.
  3. Pay special attention to stains. Treat them more carefully.
  4. Remove the product with a sponge.
  5. If the instructions do not prohibit, wipe the surface additionally with a sponge dipped in water and wrung out well. It is important to remove the detergent composition as thoroughly as possible.
  6. Place a highly absorbent terry towel on the treated area. Using your palms, press over the entire surface to remove moisture.

For the procedure, you can use upholstery products Tubo, THOMAS Pro Tex, HG, Vanish, and Amway oxygen bleach. If you don’t have similar household chemicals on hand, use laundry soap or Antipyatin.

Clean chair with fabric upholstery

You can use a foam cleaner for car interiors to clean an office chair with thick synthetic upholstery. The product removes not only grease and dirt, but also unpleasant odors. An alternative option is shaving foam. Apply it in a thin layer, leave for 10-15 minutes, remove with a sponge, and wash the surface.

Leather, eco-leather and leatherette

These are the most practical materials. They do not allow moisture to pass through. The filler always remains dry.

For natural leather, special products are produced that moisturize and maintain its elasticity. Contaminants can be removed;

  • a solution of dishwashing liquid (without chlorine);
  • lemon juice diluted with water 1 tsp. by 1/5 tbsp. liquids (trace from a ballpoint pen);
  • ammonia 1 tsp. per glass of water.

The process is completed by polishing and applying balm.

Cleaning leather chair upholstery

Eco-leather and faux leather are cleaned with a neutral agent. These materials scratch easily. Cannot be used for cleaning:

  • stain removers;
  • solvents;
  • varnish, turpentine, drying oil;
  • petroleum products;
  • heating devices for drying.

It is better to treat fresh dirt on eco-leather chairs with a sponge soaked in a weak soap solution. Try removing the problematic stain with a mixture of medical alcohol and water in proportions of 1:10.

To care for leatherette upholstery, detergents are used for delicate fabrics: silk, wool. It is important not to overdo it with water. The maximum temperature of solutions should not exceed 45°C.

When purchasing chairs upholstered in faux suede, give preference to the impregnated options. They are unpretentious and tolerate both wet and dry processing.

Velor, velvet, plush

Regular cleaning of a chair upholstered with pile fabrics should be done without a vacuum cleaner. It can be used occasionally by wrapping the nozzle in a soft cloth. To refresh textiles, you can soak them in a solution of salt or vinegar (1 teaspoon per liter of water).

Dust can be easily removed from pile fabric with a slightly damp, well-wrung towel. You need to cover the seat with it, then the back and gently pat it with your palm. At the end of the procedure, smooth the surface with a soft brush in the direction of the pile.

Stains on velor should not be scraped, nor should bleach be used on them. Try to deal with stains using a soap solution or water-based products.

Important! Any product should be tested on an inconspicuous area.

Chinille

The fabric is afraid of excess moisture. Dry cleaning with a vacuum cleaner, soft bristle brush, and foaming agents is recommended. Contaminants are removed with a cotton pad soaked in a solution of liquid soap or methyl alcohol diluted with ammonia. It is important during operation and during cleaning not to impact the fabric with sharp objects: snags can easily form on it.

Flock

This is an inexpensive, practical non-woven material. Due to the adhesive base, upholstery is not recommended:

  • get very wet;
  • treat with alcohol-containing, aggressive preparations (white spirit, turpentine, foams for cleaning car interiors);
  • use chlorine-containing products;
  • scrape.

It can be cleaned with water-based household chemicals and dried in the sun. Stains can be removed with a 10% alcohol solution.

Jacquard

The material does not like aggressive chlorine-containing agents. When cleaning, it is recommended to use hydrocarbon solvents and water-based preparations (HG, the Netherlands). Jacquard upholstery can be washed by hand, but should be wrung out carefully and dried away from direct sunlight. The water temperature must be below 40 °C.

Microfiber

Clean with a sponge and a solution of water and any mild detergent. Do not use bleaches or preparations containing petroleum products. It is not recommended to dry it in the sun, as the upholstery will fade. Stains are removed with vinegar diluted in water (1 tablespoon per liter of liquid).

Homemade formulations

A good alternative to professional furniture care products are folk remedies. You can prepare them yourself from available ingredients. Car dealership cleaners work great on some stains.

Soap solution

For 0.5 liters of warm water you need to take 100 grams of brown laundry soap, grated on a coarse grater. Stir everything until completely dissolved. With this composition you can clean an office or any other chair from grease stains, traces of tea, coffee, and juices in an hour. This composition is suitable for both fabric and leather upholstery. It is allowed to replace laundry soap with any other stain remover.

Salt mixture

This solution is only used for cleaning soft-coated products. To prepare, add a tablespoon of regular rock salt to a liter of warm water. The mixture is applied either manually using a damp cotton cloth or using a vacuum cleaner. In the second case, the brush is wrapped in a cloth soaked in the solution. The salt mixture can refresh the color of the product and clean its surface from dust.

Automotive facilities

Most automotive products are great for cleaning stains from computer chairs. The only drawback of such chemistry is the large number of fragrances. As a result of their use, the stain will be removed in a few minutes, and the pungent odor will disappear for many days. To remove dirt, you need to spray the product on a certain area, and after half an hour, remove the residue with a damp cloth.

Cleaning from various types of stains

To clean soft chair seats without streaks, you should:

  • do not rub dirt inside;
  • use water in doses;
  • blot away excess moisture;
  • at the end of the procedure, wipe the entire surface of the seat or back with a sponge soaked in detergent and wrung out.

Remove stains immediately so that they do not have time to be absorbed.

  1. Carefully remove excess dirt with a knife if it is a thick mass. Blot without rubbing with a paper towel if the stain is liquid.
  2. Act in the direction from the periphery of the pollution to the center.
  3. When you have stain remover on hand, spray it onto a napkin rather than onto the surface of the chair.

It is not recommended to mix different products. Because the remaining stain will be more difficult to remove. When choosing improvised compounds, consider the origin of the contamination.

  1. Blood is dissolved by peroxide. Drop the product onto the mark, wait 5-10 seconds for the reaction to pass, remove the foam with a cotton swab. Repeat until perfect result.
  2. Juice and wine are removed with a solution of vinegar and ammonia (1:1).
  3. The trace and smell of spilled beer is removed with an aqueous solution of white vinegar (1-2 tablespoons per 1 liter of liquid).

Advice! A universal remedy is cold soapy water. It copes with stains from chocolate, PVA glue, coffee, and fresh blood.

  • wipe all structural elements with a damp cloth;
  • vacuum the textile part of the product (you can wrap the brush with a piece of cotton cloth soaked in a saline solution);
