BloodFresh marks are also quite easy to remove from upholstered furniture. In this case, the surface must be rinsed generously with ice water. If this does not help, then it is recommended to take several pieces of ice and move them across the surface until they completely melt.
Ink, cosmetics, nail coatingThese are the most difficult stains to remove, which are almost impossible to deal with, but you can still try. In this case, in addition to detergent, you will have to use acetone or ethyl alcohol. To do this, first apply the composition to a small area of the fabric, and only then to the entire surface. This is done in order to eliminate the possibility of damage to the upholstery.
UrineA trace of urine is an organic contamination. If it was installed quite recently, it is recommended to pre-treat it with a vinegar solution and then sprinkle it with soda. If the stain is old, then the best solution would be to use a manganese solution, but this method is only suitable for dark fabrics. Light upholstery can be cleaned with a solution of citric acid and a special shampoo.
Chewing gumYou can remove gum from the surface by pre-freezing. Therefore, you will need to apply an ice cube to the surface of the upholstery. When the gum hardens, it should be carefully removed from the surface using a knife. If a mark remains on the fabric, it can be easily removed with alcohol.
WaxYou should not try to wipe off newly dripped wax from the surface, otherwise you may permanently damage the upholstery. You need to wait until it hardens, after which it can be crumbled and scraped off with a knife. Place a napkin on the remaining stain and run a hot iron over it. Such manipulations will have to be repeated many times until the mark disappears.

Useful tips

Before you start cleaning upholstered furniture at home, you should familiarize yourself with the following recommendations:

  1. Test the product. To test the fabric's reaction to a specific product, you must first apply a few drops to an inconspicuous part of the upholstery and wait 10 minutes. Only after it becomes clear that the substance has not affected the structure of the tissue can the process be continued.
  2. Protect the surface from streaks. When cleaning a sofa, unsightly stripes (stains) often begin to appear on the surface; in order to prevent this process, it is recommended to first vacuum the surface.
  3. You should not use several products at the same time. After all, it is impossible to predict what reaction they may have.
  4. Clean furniture from stains in a timely manner. As you know, fresh dirt is much easier to remove with any chemical means, so cleaning must be done as early as possible.
  5. Use bleaches with caution. Products containing this component are absolutely not suitable for any non-ferrous materials.
  6. Dry upholstered furniture thoroughly. Upon completion of cleaning, it is recommended to immediately dry the surface with warm air. If this is not done, an unpleasant musty odor may appear. Especially when it comes to fabric surfaces.

All upholstered furniture should be cleaned periodically

Cleaning stains

Stains on a sofa or armchair are an unpleasant and common phenomenon. The greatest difficulties when it comes to cleaning upholstered furniture at home are caused by stains.

How to clean different types of stains from upholstered furniture
Stains can be of various origins: food (from fat, coloring pigments), biological (from urine, blood), chemical (from ink, paints), etc.

Soap foam is considered a universal remedy for removing stains on upholstery. It is beaten by adding detergents to the water - washing powder, liquid soap, dishwashing detergent or carpet cleaner. Foam (without water) is applied to the stained area and left for 10-15 minutes, then cleaned with a damp cloth or sponge and wiped dry to remove excess moisture.

It is better to remove any stains from furniture while they are fresh and have not had time to be absorbed into the upholstery fabric.

In addition to available products (soda, soap, vinegar, etc.), you can use specialized stain removers from Amway, Faberlic, Vanish, etc.

You can try to get rid of complex stains with stain removers - industrial or home-made. At home, 9% table vinegar is used for this (at a concentration of 1 tablespoon per 500 ml of water) or ammonia (10 drops of ammonia, 1 tablespoon of shampoo or dishwashing liquid per 500 ml of water).

Removing stains with solvents is fraught with blurring or eating away the color and changing the structure of the fabric fibers. Before use, you need to make sure that they are safe for the upholstery material by testing somewhere in an inconspicuous area.

Selecting cleaning products for upholstered furniture
Do not use products containing alcohol to clean flock furniture upholstery.

There are effective home remedies and methods to remove different types of stains. Let's look at the most common ones.

Fat

A fresh stain should be degreased as quickly as possible by placing a layer of soft absorbent paper (toilet paper, napkins, kitchen towels) on it. Or you can use available adsorbents (salt, starch, talc, baby powder, tooth powder - for light-colored upholstery; dry mustard, ground coffee grounds - for dark ones). In 5-10 minutes they will take the fat on themselves and prevent it from being strongly absorbed into the fabric. The trace of a greasy stain will be well dissolved by soap suds.

Coloring drinks

Coloring drinks: fruit or vegetable juices, red wine, tea, coffee, etc. It is advisable to immediately blot the spilled liquid with absorbent paper and cover it with salt (or other powdered adsorbent). Shake off the dried powder with a soft brush and treat the stain with alcohol or vinegar solutions. To prepare them, take ethyl alcohol or regular vodka (without additives) in a concentration of 1-2 tbsp. l. for 250 ml of water; table vinegar in the proportion of 1 tbsp. l. 250 ml of water and a few drops of ammonia. All stains are rubbed off using movements from the edges to the center using a cotton swab or disk soaked in solvent. After this, apply soap foam to the remaining marks for 10-15 minutes, remove it with a damp sponge and thoroughly blot the cleaned upholstery with a dry cloth, removing excess moisture.

Blood

To clean upholstered furniture from blood stains, treat them only with cold water. Sometimes it is enough to simply rub a fresh stain with a damp sponge or lightly soaped with laundry soap. I advise you to pre-cool old stains by placing ice cubes on them, then treat them with a vinegar solution and, for final removal, scrub them with soap.

Urine

Urine stains cause trouble not so much by their appearance as by their characteristic odor. In eliminating them, prompt action is especially important - liquid should not be allowed to be absorbed into the upholstery fabric and the materials of the underlying layers. The urine should be thoroughly blotted with napkins or toilet paper and dried with a hairdryer. Next: it is recommended to treat dark and colored upholstery with vinegar (1 tbsp per 250 ml of water) or a slightly pink solution of potassium permanganate; light fabric - citric acid (1 tsp per 250 ml of water). When the treated stain dries (after 40-60 minutes), it is washed with soap foam. Remaining contaminants are removed with a sponge soaked in clean water. After removing the stain, dry the upholstery with a cloth, additionally using a hair dryer.

When removing stains from light-colored upholstery, it is better to use only white rags made of non-fading natural fabric.

Let's sum it up

It is not necessary to spend extra money on dry cleaning upholstered furniture if such a procedure can be carried out at home using the above procedures. In order to make your task easier, it is recommended to put protective covers on sofas and armchairs, because it will be much easier to remove and wash such products in the washing machine.

In cases where it is impossible to get rid of stains, it becomes necessary to replace the sofa upholstery. You can read more about how to reupholster a sofa in our article.
