What are they?
Mattresses vary in size, hardness, filling, and design. They can be:
- Spring and springless;
- Double-sided and unilateral;
- Orthopedic and anatomical.
The filler is usually latex, coconut fiber, wool, horsehair.
Hard mattresses are useful for children and people with spinal problems. It is better for an elderly person to get a soft option. Medium hardness – universal.
Upholstery plays an important role. It should absorb and evaporate moisture and be well ventilated. These requirements are met by jacquard fabric, which also has an attractive appearance. Double-sided upholstery is the most popular today: it is not hot to sleep on in the summer and warm in the winter.
For double bed
The rule for finding the length of a mattress is simple: the height of the sleeper plus 15 cm. If a double model is selected, the height of the taller person is taken into account. The sizes of double mattresses are up to 200 cm in length and 160-200 cm in width.
Inside there may be blocks of springs or only filler (latex, horsehair, coir). There are two types of blocks. The option with interconnected springs is cheap and durable.
You need to choose it, taking into account the weight of both spouses: this type of design will not suit a couple with a significant difference in weight. The heavier partner will tilt it, and the lighter partner will roll it down. In this case, it is better to choose a design with independent springs. They will only compress under the person lying down.
A high-quality modern bed mattress has a natural layer inside. Combined models are the best option: they are filled with coconut fiber and have a latex layer.
Children's mattress
The main characteristics remain the same as for adult models. It’s more difficult with the size: it must exactly match the size of the crib. Otherwise, it will slip or shift, interfering with sleep. Standard size – 120x60 cm.
It is important to choose the degree of rigidity: a model that is too soft will cause the spine to bend, and a hard one can lead to blood stagnation.
Pay attention to the materials: they should not cause allergies.
Selection of mattresses for children's beds
In order to correctly and competently choose which mattress is best for a child, you should listen to some recommendations:
- thin and soft mattress models are only suitable for children under 3 years of age;
- Until adolescence, the child’s mattress should be quite hard;
- The size and shape of the children's mattress must fully match the bed.
Mattresses with an orthopedic effect will provide your child with excellent sleep and impeccable rest, and recuperation for new discoveries.
Orthopedic mattress
The purpose of such a mattress is to reduce the load on the spine and improve blood circulation. It is believed that this model is most suitable for sleeping.
They produce both spring and springless ones. The springs in the blocks may depend on each other, but the best option would be if each one is in an individual case. In this case, each of them will compress independently of the others. This mattress takes the shape of the body of the person lying down, and its orthopedic properties are noticeably increased.
Springless models achieve this quality due to the filler: horsehair, coir, wool, latex, cotton. There are no metal structures inside the mattress, so it will last longer. A good choice for a child.
For older people, it is better to choose softer models. People with pain in the lumbar region are recommended to choose a hard mattress with blocks of independent springs and a combined filler. This option is suitable for people under 25 years of age and overweight people.
Types of mattresses for beds
There are two main types of mattresses:
- Spring
- Springless
Spring (bonnel) - consist entirely of springs connected to each other using a rigid frame. There are equal zones of rigidity along the entire length. When choosing, you should focus on your weight.
If you plan to use the mattress on a double bed, there may be an effect of the sleeper rolling towards the center of the sofa. The main advantage of this type of mattress is its low price.
Mattresses with spring blocks have an orthopedic effect, thanks to which you will not feel back pain. All springs are packed in special bags that do not touch each other and do not creak.
When choosing, you should pay special attention to the number of springs per m2, because the more there are, the more comfortable it will be to lie on the mattress.
The springs can collect a lot of dust and insects, so they should be cleaned at least once every few months.
Despite all the positive effects, there is a risk of damage to the structure when exposed to heavy weight. And not everyone can afford mattresses of this type, due to the relatively high prices.
Springless mattresses have an orthopedic effect, and thanks to the uniform support of the body, the effect of comfortable sleep is achieved. It can be made from one or more materials. Even on double beds, you will not feel the springs rolling or oscillating. Sometimes such mattresses can emit a specific smell.
As a rule, a mattress can withstand significant loads, however, this depends on the material. This choice can be an ideal option as a mattress for allergy sufferers, because it is very easy to clean and has low allergenicity.
Anatomical mattress
Very similar to the previous version, but softer and more comfortable. It provides good thermoregulation and moisture removal. Ideal for a couple. It is better for a growing body to choose a good orthopedic mattress.
Among the varieties, a water mattress stands out separately. It is a polyvinyl chloride case filled with water or other liquid. The only drawback is that it requires careful use. If you follow it, it will last up to 20 years.

Anti-bedsore mattress
For a bedridden patient, the choice of mattress is extremely important. The vast majority of patients develop bedsores over time, which only worsens the condition.
Inside, the anti-decubitus mattress is divided into sections, between which air is pumped by a compressor. This has a massage effect and is one of the most effective ways to combat bedsores. Do not forget that it is better to start using it from the first day of bed rest.
