Cribs for newborns: photos, types, shapes, colors, design and decor

The baby should have the very best - beautiful, comfortable and safe. Comfort and practicality are important for a crib, because this is the main element in the life of a newborn, where he spends the first months of his life. Ready-made cribs with all the components (canopy, blanket, mattress, bumpers and pillow) look aesthetically pleasing, but not unique. And by decorating these attributes with your own hands, you will not only receive exclusive items, but also fill the abode of your newborn baby with good positive energy.

Canopy

Yes, it collects a lot of dust and needs regular washing. But in its absence, this dust ends up on the soft objects of the crib, and the baby breathes it. It is advisable to make a canopy for a nursery from natural fabric:

  • muslin;
  • silk veil;
  • cotton voile;
  • silk organza;
  • chiffon.

The frame for the canopy can be located around the perimeter of the crib or at its head. The design can be floor-standing, resting on the headboard or attached to the ceiling or wall. Such designs are sold separately, but they can be made with your own hands using slats, metal frames, profile cornices, etc.

Outside, you can make a cheerful decor with butterflies from contrasting weightless fabric, ruffles, lace or thermal appliqués.

Crib with changing table

If your baby’s nursery is small and there is no way to install a special chest of drawers for changing in it, then an excellent solution would be to purchase a crib with a changing table built into it.

  • Sliding doors - from history to modern times
  • Features of the wardrobe door handle profile
  • Furniture for cafes, bars and restaurants

A model like the one in the photo of a crib for newborns is an excellent opportunity to make the most of the free space by ensuring that the child’s sleeping space is compact. In addition, it is very convenient not to carry the baby from the bed to the dresser for changing and back, when you can do everything in one place.

And since such models of cribs in most cases are equipped with small shelves or drawers for the most necessary little things, this makes a crib with a changing table quite popular.

When the time comes and the baby is so old that there is no need to swaddle him, the changing table can be used as a play area, turning it into a shelf for toys

Musical mobile

These are spinning toys with musical accompaniment, attached above the head of the crib. It is quite difficult to make such a unit with your own hands - you need a motor. But it’s easy to buy ready-made in a store and make a creative design. The decor can be made from funny little animals, stars, snowflakes or any other hand-sewn toys. This is original, interesting and safe (use quality fabric):

  • Cotton: fleece;
  • satin;
  • calico;
  • chintz;
  • flannel.
  • Felt.
  • Terry fabric.
  • Suitable for filling bulky toys:

    • Synthetic fluff.
    • Sintepon.
    • Ordinary or surgical cotton wool.
    • Scraps of fabric.

    How to arrange a crib for a newborn (little trick =)

    I found it on the Internet and want to share it. Because I think many mothers expecting babies are asking themselves the question of where to put our princes and princesses to bed))

    I want to tell you about a little trick that a local nurse shared with us to make it easier to teach your baby to sleep in his own crib. The fact is that newborns do not like large spaces, because... Mom’s belly was cramped and warm, but here everything is different. The crib is too big for your newborn baby! And with his arms outstretched, he gets scared, finding no boundaries! For the first time, you can sleep in a stroller or in a specially purchased cradle... Or you can build a nest like this for your baby. 1. Roll up a large towel and place it in a semicircle around the child’s head and body. 2. We put a sheet on top. And voila, our new, more comfortable crib is ready!

    It is good to sleep in such a crib for up to 3-4 months, until the child learns to change position during sleep and does not require freedom of space. The contact of the baby's head with the edge of our nest calms him and gives him a feeling of security. You can also put a small rolled up towel (or blanket) under the baby’s knees, this position is even more comfortable for him. Another trick is to put a more pleasant material instead of a regular sheet, which cools easily (it’s quite cool here now and I put a fleece or velor blanket) Otherwise, every time you put your baby in the crib, he can easily wake up from touching the cheek (hand or foot =))) to cold material.

    And do not forget that children under 18 months should sleep only on their back, without a pillow or blanket, on a fairly hard mattress due to the risk of sudden death.

    Patchwork quilts will look original, and bright drawings will amuse the baby. Pieces of geometric shapes (stripes, squares, triangles) are sewn into a single motley fabric. When choosing materials for a nursery, you need to focus on natural fabrics:

    • chintz;
    • calico;
    • linen;
    • fleece;
    • flannel (it is best: soft and hygroscopic, easy to care for).

    A waterproof mattress protector is often purchased for a crib mattress, but you can also do it yourself. Cover the oilcloth base with soft flannel, chintz or knitwear, add wide elastic bands at the corners and put it on the mattress.

    Volumetric and flat

    You can resort to a flat patchwork technique, or you can design volumetric segments. For filling, use the same materials as for toys (except for scraps of fabric). Fill the hollow squares with padding polyester or padding polyester - and an original blanket or mattress cover for the nursery is ready!

    Quilted things look interesting. Two fabric sheets are folded, with filler between them. They are stitched along the edges, then decorative stitch markings are applied and sewn on a machine. It is not difficult and original, and it is also possible to make things of non-standard sizes with your own hands.

    Pillow

    Pillows for newborns and infants should not be bulky - this interferes with the formation of the cervical spine. There are special butterfly pillows: voluminous at the edges and with a recess in the center, they provide soft fixation of the newborn’s head without changing the natural curve of the neck. You can easily make such a pillow with your own hands, using special latex, cotton wool, padding polyester or buckwheat husks for filling. Buckwheat makes a rather pleasant dull rustling sound, but the baby may not like it.

    Sides

    For soft sides, you can choose to design them with cotton fabric or felt appliqué. The main thing is not to use tiny parts and sew every little thing firmly: rest assured, the baby will try to tear off the applique when he can reach it.

    Types of children's beds

    Cradle

    This is a crib for the youngest children who have not yet learned to sit.

    Experts recommend starting with the cradle, because thanks to its miniature size, the baby will feel almost like in the usual (for 9 months!) womb of his beloved mother.

    Cradles can be:

    • Hanging
    • On wheels
    • On rocking chairs

    This is done specifically so that children fall asleep faster during motion sickness.
    Approximate cost of cradles

    Base materialPrice
    willow vinefrom 15,000 rub.
    Plasticfrom 2000 rub.
    Metalfrom 6500 rub.

    Sometimes, instead of a separate cradle, young parents purchase cribs with an additional cradle for the first six months or use a portable unit from a stroller for newborns instead. This is a very economical option, because babies (especially large ones) quickly grow out of cradles.

    Classic crib

    The classic crib is a universal invention. It is a sleeping place for a child for the first three, and sometimes, if you remove a couple of slats (so that the child can climb in and out of it independently), for five years.

    Universal bumpers, unlike teenage beds without barriers, not only protect your child from falling during restless sleep, but are also an ideal surface for attaching a crib mobile or canopy to them.

    You can purchase ready-made bedding for a child with a canopy or sew it yourself.

    Transformable bed

    A transformer is a great option for people who cannot afford to update their furniture every few years. Although its price is an order of magnitude higher than that of an ordinary crib, in the future you will save on more than one set of youth furniture. Stylish colors allow you to choose an option that will fit perfectly into both the boys’ and girls’ rooms.

    Transformers for newborns are different:

    • With removable or drop-down sides
    • With drop-down protective dome
    • With removable modules, due to which the crib turns from a child's to a teenager's
    • Foldable to easily transform into a miniature mobile bag

    A folding crib-bag for a newborn is convenient to take with you on trips: the baby will feel comfortable in any place where you stay overnight.

    Playpen bed

    The playpen bed is not only an area for the baby to sleep and relax, but also a place for games. Such cribs, due to the soft fabric sides, will protect your child from getting stuck anywhere (unlike traditional cribs with hard wooden parts). In addition, due to the fact that the bottom of the crib is a tightly stretched durable fabric, you can do without a mattress.

    However, not all cribs are stable. Therefore, give preference to models that are equipped with additional legs.

    Crib frame

    Dye

    The decor of the backs of a baby crib provides a wide field for creativity. You can decorate it with an original ornament, a floral pattern, stylized as art deco, or a print of cartoon characters. Adding paint is an easy way to add something interesting to ordinary children's furniture. Decorating with acrylic or silicone paints is harmless: they dry quickly and have virtually no odor.

    Applications

    The decor looks original with ready-made applications on a self-adhesive base - they are very easy to use and stay on the surface for a long time. Many different print options, from various patterns to everyone’s favorite heroes of domestic and foreign cartoons. You should not use rhinestones and stones: they are quite easy to peel off, tear off and swallow. Children are curious, they want to taste everything, be it iridescent rhinestones or sparkling mother-of-pearl stones.

    Bed sheets

    Embroidery design is important for him. You should not decorate with textile paints: over time, they begin to peel off and fly around. Handmade embroidery in the corners of pillowcases, sheets and duvet covers has long been used as amulets for children. It can be a simple ethnic pattern or a full-fledged complex embroidery. The main thing is that it does not disturb the baby. Bead embroidery looks impressive, but can injure the baby.

    Decorative elements should be practical, harmless and easy to wash. You should refrain from small details for the first four years: glued eyes of homemade toys, small interior parts, buttons and beads. A newborn baby needs natural materials that are hypoallergenic and hygienic, contain a minimum of chemicals and are free of toxicity.

    What should be the ideal crib?

    Ideal children's furniture should have the following qualities:

    • made from natural, safe materials;
    • have a “breathable” design;
    • have enhanced strength;
    • do not have sharp corners, protrusions or other dangerous elements;
    • have a smooth, polished surface to eliminate the risk of splinters and scratches;
    • match the height and weight of the child;
    • protect the baby from falling;
    • have high functionality (in addition to the sleeping place, there are also sections for storing things).

    Benefits of making a baby bed yourself.

    1. You are confident in the quality of the materials from which the crib is made, since you choose them yourself and work with them yourself. For store-bought products, this parameter is not always obvious.
    2. You develop the design of the bed taking into account the individual needs and characteristics of the child (if any), the dimensions and stylistic orientation of the room.
    3. You can independently test the strength of the bed structure during the manufacturing process and ultimately be sure that jumping on the mattress will not end in breaking the furniture.
    4. You save significantly if you compare the cost of a home-made bed with store prices;
    5. You get real pleasure by creating furniture for your son or daughter with your own hands.
