What can you make a children's swing from?

First of all, the swings differ in the material they are made of. Children are interested in everything that is unusual. For example, old car tires make an excellent seat. The wheels are tied to ropes vertically and horizontally. The tires are cut with a knife, turned inside out, and made into chairs and seats in the form of different shapes. There are even factory-made plastic rides like tires. The seat is equipped with mounting holes. Parents can only thread the ropes with their own hands and secure them to the support.

The classic material for assembling swings is wood. In its simplest form, the attraction for children is made of a piece of board tied with ropes or chains to a support. The seat is secured at both ends or in the center. The second option is a bungee, on which children ride while sitting and standing. A wooden permanent frame for a children's swing is created with your own hands from timber or logs. The seat for children is made into a bench or a pair of single chairs are attached.

No less popular, but expensive, are steel swings. The frame is welded with your own hands from pipes or profiles. The design is reliable and can withstand heavy loads. The downside is the metal's susceptibility to corrosion. Periodically, the structure will have to be cleaned of rust and painted.

However, metal is a very convenient material for making a collapsible structure with your own hands. Parents make compact swings for their children, which they use outside in the summer, and when cold weather sets in, they move them indoors. The frame of this design is connected with bolts and, if necessary, can be easily disassembled for spare parts.

Wooden hanging chair

Don't skim through this master class without barely reading the title. This wooden chair is very easy to make; even a woman who has never picked up a carpentry tool can handle it. You will only need to practice a little drilling holes with a screwdriver and spend a little time sanding the boards with sandpaper.

A chair made from boards that is not at all difficult to make

Planks can be bought ready-made at a hardware store. Or you can disassemble a wooden box or construction pallet. The main thing is that they are strong, dry and without cracks.

Set necessary for making a chair

Approximate dimensions:

  • length 70-80 cm;
  • width 12-15 cm;
  • thickness not less than 20 mm.

With this width, 15-16 planks will be required. They need to be aligned in length with a jigsaw or hacksaw, thoroughly sanded, rounding the edges, and impregnated with a protective agent or coated with varnish for external use.

For assembly you will also need a nylon or nylon cord.

Shapes and sizes of rattan wicker hanging chairs

The size of a wicker chair depends entirely on its shape. The most average depth parameter can be called a size from 45 to 50 cm. Spherical chairs can reach up to 80 cm. The average height starts from 1 meter. The standard value is for widths up to 60 cm. This is slightly larger than other types of chairs. If measured with armrests, then this parameter can start from 80 cm.

In any case, when hanging a chair, you will have to consider more than just its size. Don't forget that it should swing. This is its main purpose. Therefore, there should be at least 20 cm of free space around it in each direction. It is advisable to avoid the proximity of fragile, breakable and unstable objects.

Varieties

When making chairs, the technique of macrame, weaving or cover is usually used.

  • The macrame technique is the most airy. The variety of color palette of threads gives you the opportunity to choose any complex color, and the options for fabric density are wider than you might imagine.
  • The weaving technique can also be airy, but rods and threads cannot be compared.
  • The chair-cover has a quite dense appearance. The double fabric base is stuffed with padding polyester, the frame adds shape, only the manner of placement is preserved.

There are also frameless models; their structure is more reminiscent of a hammock. They use dense rope instead of solid guides.

Mounting method

According to the method of fastening, there are, as mentioned earlier, 2 types of chairs.

  • A hanging chair is attached to a beam or ceiling. Their slings are made of chains or dense ropes. They can easily be used instead of swings. Such models are not suitable for rooms with a suspended ceiling, and due to the fastening, the chair will remain in this place until the next repair.
  • The model on a stand can be moved according to your wishes, but it takes up more space. Looks good in a large room or due to a narrow seat.

What's special?

A distinctive feature of such furniture is the installation method, in which the structure is suspended from the ceiling or fixed using a special stand. The popularity of the chairs lies in the ability to swing in different directions or spin around its axis. They are also attractive because they can be installed on the beach, in the courtyard of a private house, on the veranda, in the children's room, bedroom and even on the balcony.

In stores you can find various options for hanging chairs, which differ not only in cost, but also in type of design.

What are they?

Suspended structures vary in size, mounting method and material. In accordance with the last parameter, the following types are distinguished:

  • “Swing” – has a strong frame that ensures reliable fastening. Suitable for the garden, at home and can be an alternative to the sofa.
  • “Hammock” is a frameless fabric sheet, inside of which a special inflatable pillow with an adjustable degree of rigidity is placed.
  • “Cocoon” - characterized by the presence of high side walls that fence off the interior space of the furniture. This design promotes relaxation and comfortable rest. It will be a good option for children - babies can be rocked in it, and older children will enjoy lying in such a chair. Available in various sizes and colors.
  • “Sphere” - structures that are often called “egg” or “nest”. They have an original shape and appearance. They are made from various materials, but most often from plastic and tempered glass. Suitable for home and will fit perfectly into a modern interior in a minimalist or hi-tech style.
  • “Drop” is a structure shaped like a hut. Equipped with a small window to let light in. This is an excellent option for children's furniture, where the child can feel alone and at the same time comfortable.

Illuminated designs should be included in a separate category - plastic and glass models equipped with light bulbs around the perimeter of the transparent body. Most often, the backlight is designed in the form of a pattern - abstract lines, monograms, curls or cobwebs. In multifunctional devices, the backlight can be switched and organized in several ways at once.

Next, we will consider the main selection criteria to understand which chair is best to buy.

How to attach a hanging chair

The methods for hanging such structures depend on what they will be attached to. If it is a tree branch, a horizontal bar or a beam under the ceiling, then the slings can simply be thrown over them and tied. Or make a loop and put it on the beam.

Another interesting option is to use a special stand that can be moved along with the chair to any convenient place.

Chair on the counter

But it’s difficult to make such a stand with your own hands, and you also need to accurately calculate its parameters so as not to fall along with it and the chair when you try to sit down and rock.

At home, chairs are most often suspended from the ceiling, and the method of fastening will depend on what it is made of.

Hammers

  1. A threaded hook is screwed into the wooden ceiling. But it is unlikely to support the weight of an adult. It will be much safer to screw a metal plate with a ring to the surface using several long and thick self-tapping screws.
  2. A powerful anchor is installed in the concrete ceiling, capable of withstanding a load of 100-120 kg. It should also be equipped with a hook or ring, which is convenient for hooking a carabiner or tying ropes. Before installation, a hole of the appropriate diameter is drilled in the ceiling using a hammer drill.
  3. If the concrete floor slabs are hollow, the anchor will not hold in them. Therefore, after drilling a hole, the voids through it are filled with polymer compounds, which, when hardened, form a strong monolithic mass. They are called chemical anchors and are produced in tubes with dispensers for use with construction guns. After filling the voids, a regular anchor is screwed into the hole, but the chair can be suspended from it no earlier than two days later.
  4. Heavy structures cannot be attached to suspended and suspended ceilings. You need to think about their installation in advance and use a long anchor with a threaded coupling at the end as a suspension. The length of the fasteners must be sufficient to pass through the space between the main and suspended ceilings. Then a special ring with a decorative cover that hides the hole is screwed into the coupling.

How to choose?

To avoid mistakes, when choosing, you should pay attention to the seat material, installation of the structure and permissible weight.

Material

To create hanging chairs the following are used:

  • Fabric – most often tarpaulin, raincoat fabric or jeans. In some cases, knitted jersey is used. Fabric models are distinguished by a variety of colors and decor. You can argue about their strength - puffs quickly form on the fabric and holes are rubbed out.
  • Macrame - woven from durable laces, twine and twine. Structures made from macrame have a long service life and are often used as garden and country furniture.
  • Wood – most often they use bent slats made of natural wood, which are highly durable and environmentally friendly. Due to their rigidity, they are most often combined with wicker or fabric to create a comfortable backrest.
  • Natural and artificial rattan/wicker are attractive for their strength, durability, wear resistance and aesthetics. The materials are very pleasant to the touch, and outwardly look airy and weightless. Often installed in children's rooms. The disadvantages are the cost, as well as the specifics of care. Rattan should neither be overly moistened nor dry out.
  • Plastic, plexiglass and acrylic are unpretentious and durable materials, chairs from which can often be seen on the pages of glossy magazines. Such models are universal, appropriate in many rooms and can withstand heavy weight - up to 200 kg.

Installation and weight

There are some features of installing hanging chairs.

The basic requirements apply to structures with ceiling mounting. Such products must be mounted to a ceiling capable of supporting a weight of 150-200 kg - monolithic or beam.

The hook must be firmly secured with anchor bolts. The best ones are chemical anchors, which are reliably installed in any material, even porous. It is best to plan furniture installation at the renovation stage. In this case, the fastenings can be installed as securely as possible, and then hidden using a plasterboard ceiling. Tension is not suitable in this case, since the film may be damaged when rocking the chair.

We should not forget about the possibility of the fastenings breaking, and therefore it is important to pay attention to such a parameter as the permissible load. The maximum weight should not be exceeded - this may lead to the destruction of part of the ceiling.

There should be free space around the structure within a radius of 1.5-2 meters - both on the ceiling and on the floor. This requirement is due to the fact that the structure is capable of swinging unsuccessfully and unpredictably to one side.

An alternative to mounted models is a swing chair on special stands. The advantages of such devices are that they are inexpensive, mobile, and easy to transport and move from place to place, since they are not attached to the ceiling. This is a good option for those who rent housing or live in premises where drilling ceilings is not possible. Such structures are equipped with a special stand on which the seat itself is suspended.

Where to buy and which company is better to choose a chair?

The best manufacturers are:

  1. "Laura" is a Russian enterprise located in the Moscow region. It produces both furniture for mass sales and custom-made options. The developer has its own warehouse and showroom. Most of Laura's chairs are stylish and modern, have a long service life and an attractive price.
  2. BESTA FIESTA is a brand originally from Colombia, specializing in the production of garden furniture. It supplies the market with devices made of artificial rattan and pine, mostly round in shape, which serve its customers for many years. The company's pricing policy is quite democratic.

A comfortable and reliable hammock from a hoop can be made quickly and simply; to do this, you must strictly follow the sequence of actions and go through all the stages of manufacturing, for which you need:

  1. Prepare the base and weave rope ropes. First, you need to cut the cords into pieces of equal length, then the individual braided elements; at the end of the stage, tie the resulting base together;
  2. Secure the resulting seat to the hoop. The photo shows how to weave a seat with a hoop frame, without using glue or metal accessories, distributing the weight over all surfaces;
  3. Firmly fix the suspended structure. Having chosen a place for placement, securely fix the macrame chair, made by yourself, on a mount, a tree branch or under the ceiling of the terrace.

By checking the photo and a pre-prepared project, you can achieve the desired result as accurately as possible, and a hammock made with your own hands will become a gift for yourself and your family, friends or guests, delighting you with its beautiful appearance and functionality.

Master class on making a nest

Before you start making a cocoon swing yourself, you need to:

  • Make a frame. Most often, two hoops of the same size are used for these purposes. They are connected in such a way as to form a ball.
  • Place a pillow inside the frame.
  • To make the product safe even for small tapholes, the frame should be covered with mesh.

To install the chair, you will need special fastenings (carabiners, brackets and a spring for shock absorption).

How to make a hanging swing from a hoop and rope at home?

Among the various options for making a cocoon swing with your own hands, a hanging chair using the macrame technique is in great demand. To make it you will need the following materials:

  • 2 metal hoops with a diameter of 1.1 meters and 70 cm;
  • 4 mm polyamide thread 900 m long;
  • Crochet hook;
  • twelve-meter slings;
  • 2 tight ropes;
  • 2 rods of 80 cm;
  • tape measure and scissors.

The swing manufacturing process is as follows:

  1. First, the hoops are braided using the macrame technique. A hoop with a diameter of 1 meter requires 40 meters of thread. It is laid in an even and dense layer.
  2. Next, the braided rings are connected into a single structure. To do this, the hoops are tied with a cord from one of the edges.
  3. On the other side, two rods are installed.
  4. Different techniques are suitable for weaving the back. The cord is attached to the top and the work is done downwards.
  5. On the lower hoop, the knots are tightly tightened, and the remaining threads are collected into tassels.
  6. The product is strengthened with two wide cords that will connect the seat and back.
  7. Slings are attached to the finished product and the chair can be hung.

That's the whole simple process of making a comfortable and stylish cocoon swing on a hoop. You can hang them in any corner of the house or outside.

Garden option - a textile egg on a rigid frame

To make such a product you will need the following materials:

  • one hoop with a diameter of 70 cm and up to 1 meter;
  • two thick pieces of fabric;
  • padding polyester;
  • lightning;
  • two carabiners and rings for hanging.

The swing manufacturing process is as follows:

  1. The fabric is spread on a flat work surface and a hoop is placed in its center.
  2. A hoop circle with a radius greater than 25 cm is drawn on the fabric.
  3. Two identical parts are cut out along the outlined contour.
  4. One circle is folded in half and cut.
  5. A zipper is sewn along the cut line of the central circle.
  6. After this, two fabric circles are sewn together from the wrong side.
  7. The product is turned inside out and a hoop is inserted into it. On which a thin layer of padding polyester is pre-wound and secured with threads. This will make the frame soft and comfortable during use.
  8. Next, holes for attaching ropes are marked on the product. The cutouts are carefully trimmed with braid.
  9. Cords or ropes are inserted into them, 2 pieces of 220 cm each and two ropes 280 cm long.
  10. The ropes are folded in half and their ends are tied together.

Tip: you can decorate the product with additional sewn small pillows.

The cocoon swing is mounted in the yard or in the house.

Making a cocoon hanging chair

Any option can be implemented, the main thing is the preparation process. The first stage is to make a drawing of a hanging chair, the desired shape. To make a cocoon-shaped frame, you can use two or three circles. Circles can be purchased at the store, or you can make them yourself from a metal-plastic pipe.

Having given the frame the desired shape, you can begin the framing process:

  • First option. Vine, willow, bird cherry, willow, rattan or bast. This type of work requires special equipment and skills.
  • Second option. For those who love creativity, you can use metal objects as partitions and weld them to the frame to create masterpiece designs. All limbs must be rounded before assembly begins.

The suspension for such a chair can be an iron chain, a carabiner and a mounting bolt. A more complex and larger type of fastening is an additional iron frame.

Types of rattan

Rattan is a tropical vine native to southern Asia. In addition, several vines with related properties grow in Africa. They are often sold under the guise of rattan. In principle, this is not the most significant deception, but some problems may arise. The branches of this vine can reach 300 meters. The thickest ones are used to make frames and frames. Thinner ones are suitable for weaving. But the braid is made from bark, previously removed from the branches that are used. A universal plant that does not require additional materials.

Photo of hanging rattan wicker chair

Currently the main ones are:

  • Natural. It's cheaper. Furniture made with high quality has a minimum of joints. A model with a single joint is considered elite. This factor certainly increases strength. Very handsome. A rich color palette does not make the chairs the same type. More saturated shades are achieved using glossy varnishes. Combines well with other materials. Very demanding on humidity. Rattan does not tolerate excessive moisture, but at the same time it cannot dry out. If there is a risk of drying out, spray the product with water from a siphon. The varnish needs to be updated regularly. Also minimize proximity to heaters or fireplaces;
  • Artificial. Only an expert can distinguish it from the real thing by its appearance. At the same time, all its properties are improved several times. It is much stronger, very flexible. But its most important advantage is its low maintenance requirements. The price tags are a bit disappointing. This material is expensive. Suitable not only for home use. Such furniture can be installed in the garden or verandas. Natural cannot boast of this. If you know how to weave, you can save money by purchasing artificial rattan as a material. These can be strands, tapes or fairly wide strips.

How to make a cocoon chair with your own hands

The classic version is a wicker chair made from flexible willow, rattan, broom or bast rods. For those living in central Russia, the following materials are recommended: broom or willow, growing densely along the banks of rivers.

To complete the work, prepare the following:

1. Long willow twigs, with a diameter of 10 to 15 mm, quantity - 400 - 450 pieces. A more flexible and easier to work material is rattan, recommended for those who are weaving for the first time.

2. The frame of the outer part of the furniture will be a metal hoop, metal-plastic pipes or vine rods braided with a scythe.

3. To tie the frame, prepare strong twine and glue.

4. To measure and cut the material we use pruning shears, an awl, a knife and a ruler.

5. We will weave the back with a nylon cord with a cross-section of 4 mm. For making the back, a wicker is recommended, but this is an option for those who are familiar with weaving techniques.

6. We will hang the chair on ropes, cords or chains. The length depends on the height of the room.

The type of weaving may vary, it all depends on the skill.

How to make a chair:

1. First, we prepare the vine: steam it and peel it from the bark, then beat it. These manipulations will make it more pliable.

2. We start by forming the frame. If a hoop is chosen as the front part, and the shape itself should be oval, it will have to be flattened. And yet, it is recommended at this stage to use a metal-plastic pipe, which bends easily, and its ends are connected by an insert.

3. Frame elements are attached to the pipe. The cross-sectional thickness of the rods should be from 6 to 8 mm, and the length should be from 250 to 400 mm above the chair (with vertical mounting). If there is no material of this length, the elements are attached horizontally.

4. When installing the rods vertically, they need to be secured in the upper part of the frame so that at the level of the middle of the back there is a distance of 20 - 25 mm between them.

5. To give the desired shape, the rods are bent, and then collected towards the middle.

6. To secure the frame vine to the base, it is bent through a pipe from the inside of the chair to the outside. This end is intercepted with the vine with twine.

7. The next step is the transverse braiding of the frame rods with a thinner vine. You need to start from the bottom. At the end of the pipe, the rod is bent, then twisted around the main vine.

8. This method is used to braid the entire furniture frame. The finishing rod must be bent, tucked in, and then fixed.

When the frame is ready, all that remains is to select a sufficiently thick foam cushion that will serve as a seat.

Features of rattan hanging chairs

The most common shape of rattan wicker hanging chairs is the truncated sphere or egg-shaped body. Curved, durable axles help the frame maintain its shape even when the occupant reclines. This peculiar island is braided with thinner rods. There are a huge number of weaving options.

In this case, non-traditional techniques are often used. There are enough features:

  • Fits perfectly into most interior styles. Even the most sophisticated palace decorations can be matched with a suitable option;
  • Beautiful appearance. Most models are undeniably pleasing to the eye;
  • A great way to get rid of nervous tension. Within a few minutes you will feel that the nerves relax at the same time as the muscles;
  • High mobility. Rotates in any direction;
  • A good option for equipping a nursery. They will definitely like it.

There are also a few not-so-pleasant moments:

  • Natural rattan costs less, but is difficult to care for. Artificial one will save you from a lot of hassle in maintaining the appearance, but it costs several orders of magnitude more.
  • Expensive. The painstaking work and complexity of some elements of the chairs takes its toll. You have to pay for this pleasure.

Modifications of a round swing-nest with a net

For those who know the macrame technique or are good at sewing, the proposed weaving option will seem primitive. For them, we offer other, slightly more complex, but also more convenient do-it-yourself round swing-nest designs.

Advanced weave pattern with diamond mesh

The photo shows that instead of being arranged along the diameter of the circle, the ropes are simply located next to each other, two adjacent segments are woven (tied together). This manufacturing method is shown in more detail in the video.

A more complex design on two hoops is a “nest with a back.”

Elegant weaving with fringe, wicker back and hangers

And in this “nest”, not a round, but an oval hoop is used. The weave forms a kind of “bag”. This option is closer to factory hanging drop chairs.

A simple design with textile loops - you don’t need to weave anything, you just need to sew a round platform from durable fabric, stitch it in equal increments along the edge of the loops and sew a hoop into them.

An original swing tent - here, in addition to the seat, you will also need a conical dome with an entrance hole. With the large diameter of the hoop, you can even sleep here.
