Reasons for the popularity of a wrought-iron canopy bed, selection criteria

How to wear it correctly?

After purchasing or making your own crib canopy, an important issue is how to secure the product.

Manufacturers provide several options for placing canopies:

fixation to the floor; fastening to the bedside headboard, however, it is important to take into account its width; ceiling mounting; installation of the frame to the wall.

Long canopies, as well as products made from heavy fabrics, require reliable and durable fastening. Such models are usually mounted on a special holder to the ceiling. Lighter fabrics are placed on the bar next to the crib. Those products that are installed using additional elements to the ceiling or wall will be stationary, therefore they will not be suitable for mobile cradles.

Types of canopies over the bed

Modern interior and furniture designers offer a lot of both classic and unusual options for canopies over the bed.

But from all the variety of designs, three main types of canopies can be distinguished:

  • fabric attached to supports. Such a canopy allows you to highlight the contour of the bed, giving it a central place in the interior;
  • hanging fabric. In this case, the canopy will play a major role in the decorative design of the bedroom;
  • structures of non-standard design: a four-poster bed in the bedroom will perform the functions intended by the designer.

All canopies consist of two main parts:

  • frame or hanger for fabric;
  • fabric cloth.

Methods for attaching a canopy over a bed

Depending on the mounting method, the following types of bed canopies are distinguished:

  • on the frame - the classic version;
  • canopy - “crown”;
  • "cords";
  • framed.

A canopy bed on a frame allows you to create a luxurious interior: the space from the ceiling to the bed is framed by a frame, and on the sides there are wooden or metal stands with ornate and forged elements.

The “crown” design is used to create unusual designs: its axis is located in the center of the bed, and the frame has the shape of a circle or square through which the fabric is pulled. This option is considered the most sophisticated and aristocratic.

The “cords” design is used for interiors in loft style or any folk design. Special hooks are attached over the corners of the bed. Then slack cords are tied to them, on which the fabric is hung. The main advantage of this model is ease of installation.

In a frame canopy, the fabric is secured with an arc to the frame. This is the most budget option for attaching a canopy. The only drawback of this design is the need to attach the arc to the wall. In addition, such a canopy may be too modest to create a luxurious interior. But it will fit perfectly into the rustic or oriental style of the bedroom.

What fabric to choose for a canopy over a bed

If you want to choose a canopy for your bed and subsequently not regret your purchase, special attention should be paid to the fabric from which the canopy is made. Of course, the main significance of a modern canopy lies in its purely decorative function, but some types of fabric can also have a practical purpose

Of course, the main significance of a modern canopy lies in its purely decorative function, but some types of fabric can also have a practical purpose.

If you want to achieve a special, romantic atmosphere in the bedroom, then it is best to give preference to natural light, translucent fabrics - silk and veil. They will perfectly emphasize the tenderness and mystery of the interior. In addition, such light draperies will help visually expand the space - this is a godsend for cramped bedrooms.

Heavy, denser fabrics - velvet, jacquard and tapestry have long been a symbol of prosperity and luxury. Therefore, they are perfect for creating classic and palace interiors.

In addition, such fabrics do not transmit light well, which is especially important for healthy sleep.

The color of the fabric is also important. It can be either patterned or plain. It is desirable that the shades of the canopy be duplicated in other textiles in the bedroom - for example, curtains, bedspreads or bed linen. If you want to achieve the effect of restraint, then give preference to cold tones, and to create a cozy and sensual atmosphere, warmer ones - scarlet, orange, powdery and noble shades of gold.

Advantages and disadvantages of using a canopy

Pros of installing a four-poster bed:

  • A dining space is created inside, which is especially important in a children’s room where two children live. Each of them has their own place, personal space. In the adult bedroom, a canopy over the bed creates a cozy and intimate atmosphere.
  • Sun protection for those who do not want to cover windows with curtains or hang blinds. At night it saves you from bright moonlight, helps you fall asleep faster and sleep peacefully.
  • Dense fabrics provide good insulation from external sounds. They help get rid of noise from neighboring rooms or from the street, and retain heat inside if the room is cool.
  • The method of zoning space helps to isolate yourself from prying eyes. Relevant for a sleeping place in the living room, especially if several people live in a studio apartment.
  • From a psychological point of view, too high ceilings interfere with healthy sleep and cause anxiety. The canopy acts as a ceiling and helps you feel safe.
  • Protects from drafts and dust if the room is on the windy side or there is a road nearby. Thin fabric does not allow harmful particles to pass through, traps them and makes breathing easier.
  • Externally, with successful design, a canopy over the bed looks beautiful, adds romance, and helps to stylize the room.

Minuses:

  • This decorative element is contraindicated for allergy sufferers. The abundance of fabrics accumulates dust.
  • This decorative element has to be washed frequently; during the drying process, the frame remains empty. The issue can be resolved by purchasing a second replacement canopy.
  • Not suitable for small spaces. Visually it makes it even smaller, reducing the distance from floor to ceiling.

The presence of a canopy is important in a children's room to protect the child from sunlight and flying insects. In an adult bedroom, it will look good in combination with the surroundings and if there is free space.

Thus, a four-poster bed in the interior is one of the most comfortable, affordable and at the same time simple options for ensuring the psychological comfort of a person’s rest. In addition, a correctly selected canopy will become a real decoration of the interior of the bedroom, emphasizing the central place of the bed in it.

How to choose a four-poster bed?

Canopy in the form of a semicircle
Canopy with fastening in the form of a semicircular canopy

If you want to decorate your bedroom with a luxurious canopy bed, you will have to go to a furniture showroom. These fashionable designs are very popular, you can always find something suitable for yourself. The desired model can also be made to order.

Large round bed with built-in canopy ceiling

When choosing a canopy bed, keep in mind the size of your room. Massive beds with canopies made of heavy, dense textiles are not suitable for a tiny bedroom. They visually “eat up” an already small space, making the room look low and cramped. If you still want to decorate your bed with a canopy, choose options made from lightweight materials on elegant supports.

Provencal style bedroom with a thick canopy made of natural fabrics

Ordinary curtains screwed to the ceiling successfully act as a frame. A narrow couch located in a niche can be elegantly separated from the rest of the room with a curtain using regular curtains.

Style and design for children's canopy

Whatever the style of the canopy, its lower edge should at least cover the base of the crib. For older children, they try to make the length of the fabric to the floor. It is better to choose a canopy for a crib for newborns with a length that covers the backrest by three quarters. Very often the baby has to be taken out of the crib and picked up. If the canopy is too long, it will interfere with these actions and you will quickly get bored. Short versions of canopies are also found on sale, but such canopies serve only a decorative function.

The upper part of the canopy is most often made in the form of a wide strip of fabric, gathered into lush voluminous folds, and in any of the above ways. For decoration, curtain accessories, appliques, ribbons, lace, and fringe are used. The side and bottom edges are usually trimmed with a narrow flounce, decorative braid or fringe. As a result, the entire structure looks very elegant and airy.

In order for the canopy to fit into the interior, it is advisable to combine the rest of the textiles in the nursery: curtains, bedspreads, covers for the sofa and armchairs with it in color and style. It is not necessary to completely copy the colors and decorations. It is enough to use tones from the same range, but darker and add the same accessories. For example, trim the bedside canopy and window curtains with the same fringe.

Looking at the photos below, you can see how such a seemingly insignificant detail, like a canopy, can transform the interior and create a special atmosphere in it.

As the child grows up, the practical significance of the canopy fades into the background.

But it continues to be an important decorative part of the interior and turns the girl’s room into real chambers for a princess.

If your child has grown up and sleeps on the sofa, this is not a reason to refuse a canopy, since in a children's room it is appropriate not only above the bed. The main thing is to choose the right color, style and accessories.

Often, children do not feel very comfortable on the top tier of a bunk bed and are afraid to fall asleep. The canopy will give them a feeling of security and will be a great way out of the situation.

Decorations in the form of artificial flowers and butterflies on children's canopies always look appropriate. Even a novice seamstress who has only recently learned to thread a needle can use them.

The lights give the canopy a truly fabulous look.

Fabrics with patterns do not require additional accessories or complex patterns. A delicate colored print on transparent fabric is a decoration in itself and looks better on a canopy of a simple style.

Canopy over the bed in a Provencal and country bedroom

Provence is characterized by blurred, slightly faded tones of walls and textiles, delicate natural shades of blue, turquoise, olive, and lavender. In such a bedroom, a white linen canopy trimmed with lace or braid would look ideal, while the bed itself could have an openwork forged backrest and posts.

In a country-style bedroom, a red and white checkered canopy, a rustic, cheerful and simple color, or a white canopy would be appropriate. The rest of the textiles in the room should be of a similar format, but it is better to choose a bed made of natural wood, light color or natural wood shades. An abundance of pillows of different sizes and lush blankets are appropriate in a bedroom of any provincial style.

Materials

Given the huge range of fabrics, canopies for children's beds can be made from a wide variety of textiles. Products can be dense or light and transparent, each option finds its admirers. As practice and reviews from parents show, the first option is more useful, especially if the cradle is located in the parent’s bedroom or the lighting in the nursery is quite saturated. In addition, thick fabric will be an excellent solution for a canopy in children's rooms, where cool air is retained. Lightweight options will provide the nursery's interior with a feeling of weightlessness, but will also act as excellent protection from dust and insects.

The main criterion when choosing, in addition to appearance and interior compliance, will be the need to purchase products exclusively from natural fabrics, otherwise even the most weightless synthetic materials will become an obstacle to free air circulation. Most often, canopies for children's rooms are made of cotton and silk, but options made of linen and chintz are also quite in demand. The main advantage of lightweight models is the ease of draping, which ultimately allows you to create very beautiful wave folds.

From a practicality point of view, taking into account the fact that the bulk of dust will settle on the material, you can opt for canopies made of tulle or organza, even white. These fabrics wash very well and dry almost instantly.

They also do not need to be ironed, but can be hung up immediately after washing, which makes it easier for mom. But it is worth considering that these materials are thin, so they cannot provide adequate protection from light and sound. Tapestry and velvet will create a truly luxurious environment in the nursery; in addition, such fabrics have good soundproofing qualities.

The color range allows you to choose a canopy to suit any interior. For newborns, it is preferable to opt for light shades; appliqués and ornaments should be temporarily abandoned, since various bright elements will distract the baby, causing fatigue and disrupting sleep. As the child grows older, the canopy can be replaced with a more colorful one, or various decorative additions can be added to the existing one in accordance with the gender, age and preferences of the baby.

For children

Canopies for children's rooms, as a rule, are made from light and light natural materials that do not cause allergies and are easy to care for. A canopy over a crib made of cotton, linen, or silk will create additional protection for the baby from bright light and sounds from neighboring rooms. A canopy in a little girl's bedroom will turn it into a princess's room, creating a fabulous and cozy atmosphere.

For older children, it is not necessary to use canopies that completely cover the bed; a piece of fabric can simply become part of the design of the headboard. Bright, cheerful colors and patterns that are in harmony with the overall design of the room, textiles, lighting, and style are also appropriate. A four-poster bed for a girl or boy is a magical house where a child can isolate himself from the outside world and retire with a book and toys.

Beautiful interiors

A four-poster bed can be placed in both an adult and a children's bedroom. Today, consumers have access to a wide range of models made in a variety of styles (from classic to rococo), decorated with truly luxurious fabrics.

For children, options with light and airy textiles are most often chosen. It can be either plain or decorated with positive prints and designs.

Here are some harmonious interiors that feature attractive four-poster beds:

In a cozy green bedroom with a dark laminate floor, a tall white bed with a canopy decorated with thick white textiles will look impressive. You can complement the sleeping area with a light dressing table, a white chest of drawers and a soft beige carpet on the floor. If the room has a window, then it should be decorated with white thick curtains.

What styles are used?

A four-poster bed in an urban environment has an aesthetic meaning and is used in various stylistic directions as a decorative detail. For studio apartments, the presence of such an element is necessary to divide the space and hide the sleeping area from prying eyes. The shape of the frame and its design are chosen in accordance with the surrounding interior.

Minimalism

The style of this direction implies a minimal set of furniture, straight surfaces, fabrics without patterns (laconic geometry is acceptable), and calm flesh tones. The frame for the canopy above the bed here is made of straight, strict elements (wooden or metal). Suitable for mounting to the ceiling or to the bed. The details themselves are subtle and unnoticeable. Ceiling slats can be recessed into a niche to create the effect of a canvas floating in the air.

Neoclassical

A calm combination of classic furniture and luxurious fabrics. The frame supporting the four-poster bed looks solid; carved or themed inserts are possible (in the form of tree branches, as a continuation of the bed legs). Let’s assume a double layer of fabric: the top one is expensive, dense, and underneath it is light, weightless, translucent. Suitable for an adult bedroom, it emphasizes the luxury of the furnishings and the status of the residents. The fabrics are tied using braided ropes with tassels and special clips made in the style of the surrounding interior.

Canopy in the bedroom

Canopy on hanging frames

Inspired by a relaxed boho style, this bedroom features frames made from bamboo and suspended from the ceiling by ropes. Light tulle was chosen as the fabric for the canopy - it can be tied in knots or unraveled, depending on the time of day and your desire.

If you want to repeat this example, you don't have to look for bamboo frames. Any wood or hollow tube will do, but preferably thin ones. Also, do not choose thick, heavy fabric - the fastening will not support it.

Canopy on wooden beams

In this bedroom, fabric was hung from wooden beams on the ceiling. To make a similar structure, you need to attach the beams to the ceiling along the perimeter of the bed (mark the place for the beams with gaps a little further than the perimeter of the bed, so as not to get confused by the meters of fabric when lying on it), and hang the fabric. Preferably linen or cotton - not completely transparent, but not heavy either. You can make beams like cornices to move the canopy apart if desired.

Canopy on vertical posts

This is a variant of the classic canopy, when the rectangular frame is fixed on four “posts”. You can find such beds from some manufacturers and brands - all you have to do is choose the right fabric and hang it like a curtain. You can also simply drape the canopy fabric over the frame, this will create a relaxed atmosphere - just what you need for sleep. Choose textiles that suit your style: for example, linen and cotton look good in bedrooms with a modern, Scandinavian or nautical style. And organza and satin are ideal for classic bedrooms.

Sometimes the counters are decorated with garlands or climbing artificial plants.

Canopy-"sail"

This is the name for the canopies that hang from the ceiling above the bed. The fabric is secured to two slats at the top, and depending on the length and type of material, it either falls down onto the bed or hangs above it. It’s not difficult to repeat such a canopy in your apartment - just attach two slats to the ceiling and choose the fabric you like.

Canopy with dome

Perhaps this is the most popular type of canopy. It can be mounted above the bed, in the middle, or decorate the headboard in this way - it depends on your preferences. The frame of the dome can be a hoop - just fasten the fabric to the hoop and lift it on a rope. Then you will get a dome.

For a nursery, such a canopy is the most popular option; it is also easy to make yourself. You just have to look for a small diameter hoop or take, for example, a sewing ring. Choose light flowing fabrics and improvise with canopy decor: you can hang paper garlands, toys or lanterns.

DIY canopy

Buying a four-poster bed today is not difficult. But it happens that the cost of the product turns out to be too burdensome. Or the store simply doesn’t have a model that matches the overall style of the house and your aesthetic aspirations.

The best way out of this situation is to make a canopy with your own hands. Such a product has important advantages: it is completely unique, meets all your requirements and will cost much less.

Canopy-sail attached to wooden beams

Every home craftsman can assemble a canopy support. Simply lengthen the furniture legs to the desired height. A suspended round frame can be easily constructed from a regular hoop for gymnastic exercises. A square hanging frame can be assembled from thin wooden slats or more creative materials - branches, bamboo sticks.

Eco-design of a bedroom with branches serving as a mount for a canopy

Ordinary curtains open up wide scope for imagination. They can be mounted on the ceiling to hang a canopy from. An option is hooks in the ceiling - an excellent solution for a bed with a translucent canopy made of light fabric.

Canopy on ropes

An original design solution would be a beam (one or several) fixed above the bed. The fabric thrown over it will act as a canopy. The material of the beam depends on your imagination: wooden beams, painted or untreated, metal pipes, natural branches. A rope stretched through rings on the ceiling will also work. Several beams can be fixed at different heights by placing fabric on them in a spectacular cascade.

When choosing the design and fabric for the canopy, remember the main thing: the canopy bed should fit perfectly with the overall style of the bedroom. Otherwise, your imagination is free. You can try to copy canopy samples based on photos on the Internet. Rich collections of photographs can be easily found by thematic queries. Don't be afraid to combine elements of different styles and experiment with finishes and decorations. The result is a spectacular and original design - the best decoration for the bedroom.

Happy creativity!

Four Poster Bed

The appearance of beds with a canopy and draperies (canopy) has purely functional roots. A long time ago, an isolated “room within a room” protected from cold and drafts, sheltered from bright light, and protected from extraneous sounds. In houses built according to the enfilade principle, the bed with a continuous curtain canopy performed another important function - it served as almost the only place of solitude.

Various historical eras made their own changes to the design and design of the canopy. In the Middle Ages, the bed was most often equipped with a large canopy based on a wooden frame, often with architectural divisions, carvings and color painting. Tent drapery could be attached either to a special frame or directly to the ceiling beam.

The Renaissance period decorated the bed with a high headboard. At that time, in noble houses it was customary to receive guests lying down, so the bed was often an architectural structure on a high podium, with significant columns in the corners. A rectangular frame was built above the sleeping place, ending with a cornice and frieze, behind which curtains were attached. All this made the bed solemn and representative, emphasizing the greatness of its owner.

During the times of demonstrative luxury - Baroque - the main functions of the canopy lost their relevance - decor received active development. The tented structures of the beds were luxuriously draped with expensive, exquisite fabrics: velvet, silk, damask. But the advent of the age of classicism returned the canopy to an almost open, graceful design: the pillars became “slimmer”, the bulky curtains became noticeably lighter. All that remains of the draperies is a symbolic “stole” at one side of the bed.

Canopy Bed Ideas for Adults

A four-poster bed located in an adult bedroom is the main decorative element of the interior. The design of the canopy largely depends on the stylistic decision of the room:

  • the luxury of a classic bedroom interior will be emphasized by a bed with a carved wooden support structure and an airy chiffon canopy;
  • The idea of decorating a bedroom in an oriental style with a multi-layer canopy consisting of transparent and dense fabrics and decorated with tassels and embroidery looks great;
  • the design of a bedroom in a modern minimalist style will be complemented by a bed with a canopy made of thick plain fabric or a roller canopy in the form of Roman blinds;
  • The high-tech style of the bedroom involves minimal use of textiles as decor, so you can use an open metal frame - without a canopy;
  • a la Baroque design to decorate a bed draped with a canopy with flounces and frills;
  • recreating the African style in a bedroom interior, you can use thick bamboo stems to hold the canopy structure, and thin bamboo or ocher-colored cotton textiles for the canopy itself.

Attention! Modern designers offer interesting ideas for canopy beds. For example, an ultra-modern plastic sleeping place with the same curved plastic canopy, without a canopy.

Color

Since the four-poster bed will occupy a central place in the bedroom, it will set the main color tone of the room. White or black furniture implies decorating a room in a minimalist style. These shades are considered universal because they go with almost everything, however, a monochrome color scheme is also appropriate. A light bed looks good with similar walls and neutral flooring. If red, blue or emerald fabric was used to decorate it, the remaining items will have a similar color.

The chosen color depends purely on the personal preferences of the apartment owner and the chosen style, so there is no universal option for decorating a bedroom. The only rule that cannot be broken is the need to select shades that are compatible with each other.

The purpose of the room is also important: the bedroom is intended for relaxation, so the colors should have a calming effect on the psyche

What are the advantages and disadvantages

Artistic processing of metal allows the craftsman to create unique, very strong and durable, elegant pieces of furniture. Wrought iron beds will add a touch of individuality to a living space decorated in classic, art deco, and country styles.

Advantages of forged beds:

  • variety of shapes and finishing options. Most often, such furniture is made by hand. The result is not just furniture, but a work of art that embodies the tastes and wishes of the customer;
  • high strength and durability. A wrought iron canopy bed will last for many years. It can be passed down from generation to generation as a family heirloom;
  • safety for others. The metal does not emit toxic substances, toxins, and does not affect human health in any way;
  • high fire resistance and moisture resistance. Metal does not lose its shape from exposure to water and fire;
  • easy care, or rather lack thereof. Forged products do not require special repairs; they do not need to be tinted or treated with protective agents. The metal is not susceptible to low temperatures or insects. For many years, the canopy bed retains its original appearance;
  • the unique ability to create an atmosphere of warmth and coziness, comfort and relaxation in the room. Smooth lines of forged patterns and soft fabrics of the canopy help you forget about the hustle and bustle and relax.

Disadvantages of forged furniture:

  • high cost - an individual approach to each project and handmade work increase the cost of furniture several times, narrowing the circle of potential buyers;
  • restrictions on placement. A wrought-iron canopy bed is a rather bulky design that cannot be placed in small bedrooms;
  • heavy weight - when choosing forged furniture, you should remember that transporting it from one room to another is problematic due to its heavy weight;
  • an unpleasant feeling of cold when touching the furniture frame. The metal takes a very long time to heat up and gives off heat quickly.

Make a stylish canopy with your own hands - master class

When decorating a room, it is important to correctly place accents and create stylish decor for the main element – the bed. There is a lot of debate on the topic: how to make a canopy with your own hands, and whether it is needed

This is, of course, up to the owners of the room to decide. We hope that if you decide to install a do-it-yourself canopy over your bed, our master class will come in handy.

You can make a bed out of not just a sleeping place, but a work of art

Everything is important here: a uniquely shaped headboard, colorful bedding, paintings - this attracts the eye and improves your mood. The only thing missing is the canopy over the bed

As you can see, the fabric for the canopy, which should be attached to the ceiling, is reminiscent of the idea of paintings located at the head of the bed.

To work you will need:

  1. Colored fabric – 5 meters.
  2. Two blue stripes for edging the fabric.
  3. Stapler.
  4. Screws for attaching the canopy to the wall and ceiling.
  5. 2 wooden slats.
  6. Sewing machine.

The instructions say that the length of the fabric should be 5 meters. We would advise you to first take any rope or thread, measure 5 meters and estimate, looking at the diagram, how much fabric you will need. Please note that your ceiling height may be different. Add to this length another piece of fabric with which you need to wrap 2 wooden slats.

Step one - you need to make the awning itself. This is possible if you have a sewing machine. The strips are sewn at a distance of 7.6 cm from the edge. This means the strip should be 15.2 cm wide so that it goes around the fabric on both sides. The width of the colored fabric is 137 cm. We attach the strip by folding the front part of the fabric and the front part - stripes. Sew 0.7 from the edge. Then straighten the seam, iron it to the center, and, going around the edge, folding the fabric, stitch it a second time.

The instructions say that stitch the fabric on the reverse side not in the direction you sewed the first time, but in the opposite direction. This way it will be more accurate and the awning will not warp.

Before hanging the awning you have made, you must iron the fabric well so that not a single wrinkle remains. The diagram shows at what distance the canopy is attached; all dimensions are indicated in inches (1 inch = 2.5 cm).

Next, we take 2 wooden slats (in the absence of slats, you can use strips of drywall) and wrap them with fabric using a stapler. We attach one rail to the wall. We use screws for fastening; they are available at any hardware store.

We attach the second rail to the ceiling itself and the end of the fabric should hang down by 45 cm. The distance from one rail to the other is 91.4 cm. Here the slats act as holders for a canopy, made with your own hands.

So you have made yourself a fashionable canopy. The good thing about decor made by yourself is that you make all this beauty yourself for your comfort. And what could be better than a cozy home into which you have poured your whole soul.

Advantages and disadvantages

Based on the intended purpose of canopies, we can highlight the positive aspects of using this accessory in a children's room.

  • Since modern apartments are often furnished in the form of a studio, placing a crib with a canopy will help zone the space for the baby, isolating it from extraneous sounds and light.
  • For older children, canopies over the bed can act as a thematic addition to the interior, because quite often children's rooms are decorated based on fairy tales or cartoons.
  • In addition, instead of such a relic of the past as a carpet or tapestry on the wall, a dense canopy can partially prevent the spread of cold from the wall, which is important for corner rooms.

However, like every accessory, the canopy has its drawbacks:

  • since it acts as a barrier to dust, collecting it on its surface, the fabric will need regular washing;
  • products made from natural fabric with an individual design will have a high cost;
  • the canopy visually reduces the area of the room and the height of the ceilings;
  • Children quite often use the canopy to play, which can lead to traumatic situations.

The above-mentioned disadvantages can be easily mitigated if you choose products with an easy option for fixing above the bed, so that if there is dirt, you can quickly remove and clean the canopy. To save money, you can make a canopy yourself; as a result, a unique product will appear in the children's room, which can be used to decorate any shaped bed - round, rectangular, or even a bunk bed for the weather.

Canopy bed

This option looks like a tent. If the bed is positioned with the head of the bed facing the wall, then an oval or circle holding the linen will be placed above the area with pillows. If the bed is on its side, the frame is attached closer to the middle so that the bed is evenly distributed on both sides. On children's beds, a tripod is used that holds a ring.

This placement is done to decorate the bedroom, often found in a children's room. Rarely is a second layer of fabric used. The attachment point and the ring are covered with a layer of material, the length of the canopy is adjusted using clips, bows or ropes. A loose flowing canopy can be laid along the head of the bed or divided into two parts and tied up.

Canopy for an adult bed - photos of different styles and types

So, we decided on this unusual decor for our bedroom! A canopy over an adult bed reminds us of a palace chamber, but today it can also be made in a retro style. There are ideas in which it will fit perfectly into a bedroom interior in a modern style, with an oriental atmosphere or with a romantic climate. Below are several options on how to use and play with this theme in your own home.

A bed or canopy holder for an adult bed can be purchased today from many furniture companies. You can find various models in different styles on sale.

Canopy frame for an adult bed in a classic style

The most classic choice would be a wooden frame, with carved decorations on the pillars. The material that should be selected for them should be thick enough, with a slight shine and ornament. Falling fabric floors can be tied in the corners of the bed, like curtain drapery.

Canopy in a romantic style

In a romantic setting, we focus on a canopy made of delicate tulle and light light organza. The holder can be made of wood or forged metal with elegant shapes. You can also use lace with rustic patterns to add accents. Thanks to them, the interior will become warm and cozy.

The holder itself can be in the form of a circle attached to the ceiling; this design is sufficient to support a small light veil.

Modern style steel canopy holder for adult bed

Modern style loves simplicity, so a bed with a steel frame and an ascetic canopy is a good idea. A fine linen fabric that emphasizes its raw character is ideal. These simple options are also ideal for small interiors, as they will not overwhelm them and will not visually reduce the space.

Canopy in Scandinavian style

Modern and minimalist Scandinavian-style interiors are not associated with metal and glitter, but rather an atmosphere with natural accents. A Scandinavian-style bed should be made of wood, as should the canopy frame. We choose delicate fabrics for this style - thin, white voiles, linen and cotton in pastel colors.

In oriental and boho style

An oriental and bohemian style bedroom with oriental accents will get an amazing look thanks to fabrics with Indian patterns or hand-dyed fabrics. If we cannot find such materials, we can opt for white cotton, which also offers us interesting possibilities.

A canopy over a bed with an oriental or bohemian touch should delight us with the richness of its design, bright colors and shimmering golden threads of shiny organza. The red, purple, orange or gold dome creates a mysterious and fairy-tale climate.

Colonial style

Colonial style furniture is made from local or exotic woods. The frame of the canopy can resemble bamboo or thin tree trunks, and its decoration will be natural fabrics in light colors.

The recipe for decorating a colonial bedroom is inspired by nature. Neutral color fabrics combined with satin sheets will create a tropical climate, like in the films Out of Africa, The Secret Garden or Gone with the Wind.

French style

The French atmosphere is reminiscent of oval, elliptical shaped beds full of decorations. Their carved or forged frames should be set off by thin, delicate fabrics that will allow a flow of fresh air from the window.

In English style

In a room decorated in the English style, as a rule, there are checkered or floral fabrics, creating an aura of romance and artlessness.

Shabby chic style

In the fashionable shabby chic style, ethereal organza with delicate lace will play, which will help create a romantic atmosphere. You can look in your grandmother's closet for fabrics for hanging from unused lace curtains. They will create a fantastic effect! The curtain can only be thrown over the bed frame and gently drape it.

Some features of a canopy bed for children and adults

Every parent wants to see their child happy and does everything for this. He builds a children's room as a prototype of his future life - beautiful and protected from all life's adversities.

A children's canopy bed is definitely needed for children for a simple reason - protection from insects (the main reason), from light rays, and drafts.

This bed is universal for both sexes up to a certain age. The continuation can only be if this is a girl’s or girl’s bed. Boys, upon reaching a certain age, under no circumstances agree to sleep in such a bed - after all, a man is growing. But this, of course, is purely individual. It is possible that this will drag on indefinitely. Therefore, let’s consider canopy options for girls.

In this case, you should strictly adhere to the traditional color scheme of the room. The main fundamental difference between a girl’s bed is the color of the canopy. Of course, this color should be pink. Other tones are also allowed, but only those close to pink in color scheme.

As the child grows, the protective function of the canopy turns into atavism. Therefore, modern canopies over a children's bed began to play the role of simply a beautiful design element of the bed and children's room.

For teenage girls, the best option would be a canopy, which is a drapery hung at the head of the head. However, girls do not refuse this option either. This design will make the bedroom more feminine, somewhat pushing childhood out of it.

Being an original person, you will probably like a canopy hung over the bed not in the standard way, along the bed, but across it.

A great idea would be to decorate a canopy with a children's theme. For example, butterflies attached to a canopy will definitely delight your child. Also, a garland hung on the canopy curtain will be an excellent solution to two issues at once - night lighting and at the same time decoration in the form of stars.

A four-poster bed for adults has, in principle, the same features as a children's one, except that here the canopy serves more as a design element for creating a romantic atmosphere in the bedroom, rather than a practical value. And what better way to create such an atmosphere than a canopy made of voile, lye and other translucent fabrics.

Is a canopy necessary in a modern bedroom?

Even the simplest tulle canopy over the bed in the bedroom looks stylish and gives the whole room a special atmosphere conducive to rest and relaxation.

What can we say about canopies made of expensive and luxury fabrics, turning a place to sleep into a real work of design art? Despite this, many believe that the benefits of this item in a modern bedroom are close to zero, and it is difficult to care for. They are mistaken: to this day, bed canopies carry not only a decorative, but also a functional load.

Advantages of a fabric bed canopy:

  • The curtain over the bed gives a feeling of cozy security, as if taking us back to childhood. Remember how, as kids, we hid in huts made of tablecloths and blankets and felt in complete harmony with the surrounding space.
  • Under the canopy a separate sleeping area is created, a kind of “room within a room”, which is very convenient for a small apartment or studio.
  • Even a thin mesh becomes a reliable barrier to annoying midges, flies and mosquitoes.
  • Thick fabric cuts off, and transparent fabric softly diffuses light, making falling asleep and waking up more comfortable.
  • A bed with curtains will provide reliable protection from drafts. By closing them, you can sleep with the window open without fear of catching a cold.

The difficulties of care are also greatly exaggerated. Caring for curtains over the bed is exactly the same as for any other curtains, and depends on the choice of fabric for the canopy. The only difference is that during weekly cleaning you need to shake off the dust from it, and it is advisable to wash it at least once a month. You can make the process easier if you sew the canopy from a lightweight material that dries quickly and does not require ironing.

Methods for attaching a canopy

There are many ways to attach a canopy over a bed, from traditional to extravagant, invented and executed with your own hands. Let's look at some of them.

Hooks in the ceiling

Small ceiling mounts and special hooks can hold the canopy over the bed if you correctly balance the weight and volume of the fabric with the number and reliability of the fasteners. If the bed is about a light organza canopy, voila, tulle, one hook is enough. A cable with a crown hoop is passed through the hook, onto which the canopy fabric is strung. The diameter of such a hoop is small, and the shape can be not only round, but also polygonal; the fabric falls freely and drapes at the owner’s request, as in the photo below. If the hoop or square has dimensions equal to or larger than the area of the bed, then several ceiling mounts are required.

Ceiling cornice

The drapery and appearance of the canopy on the ceiling cornice depends on its shape. Depending on the type of room and the location of the bed, you can choose a round, rectangular, fancy cornice, or purchase several linear type holders. As an alternative, strong cords attached to the corners of the room or on the walls are suitable; such decor can be done with your own hands.

Bed with canopy brackets or holders

A bed with posts, curtain rods or special canopy holders is more expensive than a regular one, but this solution does not require drilling the ceiling and walls or driving nails. If you get tired of the canopy, you can not only change the fabric, but even remove it altogether, because a bed with posts of any shape looks self-sufficient and stylish without drapery. As a rule, holders for a woven canopy are located at the corners of the bed and repeat its shape, but they can also have a more intricate solution, including openwork monograms and Gothic lancet designs.

Canopy as headboard decor

If the bed is positioned with its back to the wall, then a decorative canopy or simply a beautifully draped piece of fabric can play the role of a kind of headboard for the sleeping bed. This design looks stylish and beautiful, does not create a feeling of cramping, does not clutter up the space, bringing notes of romance and comfort to the bedroom. Canopies and canopies go well with LED garlands of different shapes and lengths, as in the photo below.

  1. Mark the place where the curtain will be attached. You need to choose it according to the bed. You need to choose a space that makes you or your child feel cozy and comfortable.
  2. It is possible to construct a holder from canopy wire. It basically consists of a tripod and a ring. The support is installed at a certain height, which corresponds to your requirements and desires. Next, install the rings on which the curtain fabric is attached.
  3. Select material for the base. The holder can be selected according to your wishes: frame, crown, support, and others.

How to make a canopy over a bed

A canopy is an elegant accessory used to create a cozy environment and ensure healthy sleep. At first, curtains were used as an element of luxury over the sleeping bed of the Turkish sultans. But it was not only installed in Turkey. In Rus', fabric was attached over children's cribs to protect them from external irritants during sleep.

The main advantage of the canopy is the isolation of a person during night rest. The canopy protects the comfort zone from direct sunlight, mosquitoes, and cold drafts. It maintains the temperature and creates a romantic atmosphere.

The canopy has only one drawback - it is a material that has a predisposition to collecting dust. To make washing easier, you need to choose fabrics with a light texture.

What will it take?

First you need to stock up on all the required materials and tools:

  • cornice (wooden or metal);
  • fabric of the required length (taking into account the size of the bed) and a width of approximately 2.1 m;
  • fastening (screws and anchors);
  • screwdriver;
  • threads, needles (sewing machine).

What fabric to choose for a canopy

Along with the many advantages that an elegantly designed canopy has, there is a serious point that stands against this curtain - the possibility of quickly becoming dusty and impairing air circulation.

Therefore, certain requirements must be met for the material used to make the canopy:

  1. Loose texture.
  2. Matter must certainly be only natural.
  3. It is desirable that the material for the canopy be light in color or in the same color scheme as the predominant colors in the room.

You need to choose a sufficient amount of material, but avoid the formation of multi-layers.

For a high-quality canopy that can only bring benefits, the following types of materials are suitable:

  • batiste;
  • silk;
  • tulle;
  • cotton;
  • satin

Methods for attaching a canopy

Making a canopy, as a rule, does not take much time and does not require special skills. Every woman who has basic skills in using a sewing machine can handle this. The only thing that can cause certain difficulties is the process of attaching the frame.

Methods of attaching the canopy:

  1. Arc-shaped fastener. With this fastening method, a semicircle is made from pipes, its ends rest against the wall. The canopy is attached to the frame according to the principle of curtains.
  2. Along the contour of the bed. Racks are mounted vertically in the corners. A horizontal bar is also installed directly above the sleeping bed, onto which the material is fixed.
  3. Crown. A round pipe is attached to the ceiling - a canopy is pulled over it.
  4. Fastening on a straight pipe. For production you need one pipe, which is fixed in the center of the room, and a canopy is thrown over the cornice.

It is advisable to select the type of fastener that is most appropriate in the room. There is no need to chase fashion: if the room is small, it is best to choose an arched cornice. If the bedroom is spacious, then you can make a cornice around the perimeter.

Useful tips:

  1. Making a canopy is a simple procedure. Cut out the fabric according to the required sketch, sew loops on top for fastening. If a “shortened” canopy is used, then it must be 15-25 cm lower than the mattress.
  2. The method of fastening the frame is selected taking into account the style of the room and the type of canopy. For example: For a bed with supports, it is best to use the traditional option. This canopy looks great on beds that are located in the middle of the room. A canopy in the form of a dome requires a frame fixed above the sleeping bed. Semicircular designs look ideal on beds that are located in the corner.
  3. Instead of solid loops, ribbons can be attached to the canopy to match the color of the material. This technique, in addition to additional decor, will make it possible to quickly remove the curtain for washing.
  4. If you want to install a frame around the perimeter, then choose a profile cornice for this purpose. It is durable and elastic. The color of the cornice can be chosen to match the color of the main material.

Varieties

There are several types of canopies. They are equipped with different designs and are made in different styles:

  • The most common options are in the form of textiles mounted on supports. With the help of such varieties, you can emphasize the beautiful contour of the sleeping place and highlight the free space located above it.
  • Canopies with hanging structures are no less attractive in appearance. They can be simple and console-based. The main decorative element of such models is their canopy.
  • You can purchase textiles for canopies in various arbitrary compositions. With the help of such details you can create a suitable room design.

The designs of canopies are different:

Products on a frame are simple and common. The space above the berth, from the very ceiling, is decorated with a special frame structure. Racks (wooden or metal) are installed on the sides. The main design details can be located both in the inside of the canopy and in the area of the racks. Most often, beds with frame structures are decorated with spectacular ornate forging elements or elegant carvings. If you do not want to make such additions to the bedroom interior, then you can turn to expensive luxurious fabric.
