Sofa made of pallets: how to make it yourself?

Nowadays, it’s enough to go to any furniture store to find a sofa, armchair or bed to suit your taste and budget.

This is true, but often there is a desire to become the owner of something unusual, refined, not like everyone else. Design solutions are expensive, but you can create something special and stylish yourself.

A sofa made of pallets is a simple, original and universal solution. Made in haste, it will take a place in a cozy gazebo; expertly crafted, it will decorate a house or apartment.

Advantages and disadvantages of pallet products

The popularity of sofas made from pallets is growing over time, not only as an economical solution for a country house or cottage, but also as furniture for a stylish modern apartment. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, including:

  • cheapness and availability of the material;
  • extreme ease of manufacture;
  • reliability of design;
  • ease of use due to acceptable size and configuration;
  • attractive appearance and uniqueness of the product;
  • practicality and durability;
  • ease of moving around the apartment;
  • original design, the ability to emphasize the uniqueness of the interior.

The use of pallets for making sofas seems justified and has a number of positive aspects, but it is worth noting a number of significant disadvantages of such a material.

Pallets, especially used ones, must be thoroughly cleaned. Most often, pallets are made from scraps of wood, so you will have to work hard to choose a good material.

Finished furniture must be coated with several layers of varnish or paint to protect it from burrs and chips. It becomes difficult to clean the room. To clean under the sofa, you will have to move it.

There are many difficulties in the process of making such furniture, but all of them can be easily avoided, you just need to try and be patient. It is worth noting that recently original furniture has been in steadily high demand; many craftsmen make it both for themselves and to order. Who knows, maybe sofas made with your own hands from pallets will become a source of additional income.

Popular models

Originating as an indispensable item in warehouse work, pallets have turned into decorative elements and have become an excellent basis for a variety of sofas. The following models have gained the most popularity:

  1. Pallet sofa bench with back. An ascetic option, the structure is an ordinary garden bench, which is equipped with removable soft parts. The product is a good solution for the kitchen or dining room. If the cover of the soft part is damaged by spilled juice or soup, it is very easy to wash.
  2. Ottoman for relaxation. A comfortable place for a short break is equipped with a comfortable mattress. It is quite heavy and does not slide off the base. An important design detail is the box, which further limits the movement of the mattress.
  3. Sofa with armrests. A classic, comfortable and practical model that can be found both in the house and on the terrace or in the garden. Considering that the pallets have standard dimensions, the height of the sofa and the shape of the armrests have some limitations.
  4. Angular. Having decided to build a sofa from pallets with their own hands, many owners opt for such a model. This modification is an excellent solution if you need to equip a recreation area for a large company. Among the designs in the shape of the letter “L” or “P” there are sliding options that allow you to turn a corner sofa from wooden pallets into an ensemble of two or three pieces.
  5. Children's sofa bed. Using construction pallets to make furniture for children requires particularly careful surface treatment. It is worth considering protecting the corners to avoid injuries. Sofa beds for children are painted in bright or pastel colors, sometimes varnished, leaving them in their natural form.
  6. A more exotic variety is the hanging sofa. An underrated option that can serve as a pleasant addition to a relaxation area on a veranda or terrace. Owners who value originality decorate the living room with a mobile design, which pleasantly diversifies the interior and allows for effective zoning of the room.

Pallets are a universal building material that allows you to create a sofa of almost any configuration and size.

Variety of sofa designs

There are many options for products that you can make yourself. For a summer cottage or use as garden furniture you can do:

  • sofa bench with a comfortable backrest;
  • high ottoman for relaxation;
  • stepped garden bench;
  • collapsible sofa bed.

A stylish modern interior of a country house or apartment can be complemented by a sofa bed with a headboard or a sofa with armrests. The corner sofa is particularly functional, allowing you to save space.

When planning to make similar furniture for a summer house or country house, you should think about complementing the interior with other items from the same material. With a little imagination, a little effort, you can make a full-fledged furniture set from pallets: a sofa, a table, shelves, armchairs. This is an excellent solution for furnishing a dacha; it will help not only save a lot, but also create a unique, holistic interior.

Soft seat for sofa

The frame is wrapped with fiber - a thick non-woven synthetic material. Next, the sofa is measured and pillows or mattresses are selected based on the data obtained. Thickness - from 5 to 50 cm, depending on preference.

The soft part is made from materials:

  • sheet latex foam rubber (the most convenient option);
  • crushed foam;
  • wear-resistant sheet polyurethane foam.

For upholstery, special brands of fabric are used, for example, jacquard, flock.

This is a special furniture material that has a water-repellent effect. A zipper is sewn into the shell for thick mattresses; for thin mattresses it is made permanent.

Selection and preparation of pallets

When choosing pallets for making furniture, you need to pay attention to the fact that there are two main types of them, differing in size. These are a Euro pallet (size 80 x 120 cm) and a Finnish pallet (100 x 120 cm), you can also find non-standard products used exclusively on the domestic market. Whatever pallets are used, they must be the same size.

There are three types of similar products. First grade wooden pallets have the highest quality and, as a result, the highest price. They are made of higher quality material and bolts are used for assembly.

Note! The best option seems to be to buy a high-quality pallet that has been in use for a short time.

Regardless of whether new pallets are used or fairly used ones, before you begin assembling the sofa, they must be cleaned of dirt, burrs, protruding nails and similar dangerous decorations must be removed. First of all, the trays are cleaned; a brush with stiff bristles is suitable for this.

Cleaned pallets must be washed. You can use a regular garden hose, but using a portable car wash will give good results. There is no need to be afraid of ruining the wood; the pallets have probably already survived rain, the scorching sun, and frost.

Unless the sofa will be used outdoors, the pallets are carefully sanded. The best tool for this is a sander. You can also use a drill with an attachment or work by hand using sandpaper. The result of sanding should be a renewed appearance of the boards and the absence of burrs. It would be correct to sand all accessible surfaces of the pallet, but you can limit yourself to only open areas.

Furniture that will be used outdoors, for example in the garden or on an open balcony, must be impregnated with a water-repellent primer and antiseptic.

Manufacturing process

First you need to decide on the design of the future sofa. This could be a simple product like a bed or something more complex like a soft corner. Next you need to purchase these same pallets. They are ordered from furniture factories, where pallets are specially manufactured.

You can also get these structures by agreeing with the management of a grocery store where they have become unnecessary. As a last resort, you can make them yourself from boards.

Did you know? In the Ottoman Empire, the sofa was intended only for the Grand Vizier - the right hand of the Sultan.

Preparation of material

Pallets must be inspected for protruding nails or wood chips, and all protruding elements must be carefully removed. You also need to choose structures that do not have damage that could deteriorate their properties during use.

Pallets that have been previously used should be cleaned with a dry brush and rinsed with water from a hose. After the tray is cleaned and dried, it needs to be sanded. This is done using a grinding machine, a drill with a special attachment, or manually with sandpaper.

If future furniture is planned to be used outdoors (on a veranda, in a gazebo, etc.), the surface of the pallets should be coated with a primer intended for outdoor use - this will protect the product from moisture.

It will be useful for you to read about how to independently remove old paint from the walls and whitewash from the ceiling, how to make a plasterboard partition with a doorway, and also how to cover a wall with plasterboard.

Assembly

To make a standard sofa, six pallets are useful, but it is better to purchase eight - since during the work you may need to disassemble one of them to make transitional structures.

The approximate scheme for making a sofa is as follows:

  1. Pallets are cleaned and sanded.
  2. Two pallets are laid face down and fastened together with boards, and two more structures are connected in the same way.
  3. Another pallet is carefully sawn into two identical parts - the back of the future sofa will be made from it. Did you know? The pallet in its current form was first tested in the USA in the 20s of the last century. The American industrialists of that time quickly realized that without this device it would be impossible to move their cargo with sufficient speed.
  4. All cracks, irregularities and other defects are covered with a primer.
  5. As the primer dries, the structures are covered with a layer of varnish and paint of the required color.
  6. You can attach “legs” to the future sofa - these can be either wheels or blocks of wood.
  7. Next, pairs of connected pallets are fastened together, usually with powerful self-tapping screws.
  8. You need to screw the backrest to the future sofa using the same self-tapping screws.
  9. With enough imagination, you can attach armrests, shelves, cabinets and other accessories to a new piece of furniture.

Important! After making the base, you can attach cladding parts in the form of mattresses, bolsters, and pillows to it. Such elements are prepared in advance or purchased separately

You can attach these things in place using an industrial stapler and hardware products.

Finish coating

Before the final covering of the sofa, you need to determine which color will harmonize with the new or existing furniture. The same applies to soft elements - pillows, mattresses. It is worth making sure in advance that the colors of the furniture elements are in harmony with each other.

We recommend reading about how to build a pool, bathhouse, toilet, cellar and veranda, as well as how to make a barbecue from stone, a pergola, a gazebo, gabions, a dry stream, a waterfall, a path from sawn wood and concrete with your own hands.

If the structures are covered only with varnish, then the pillows should repeat the harsh style of the base, and are made of burlap. Pallets can be painted in any color, while upholstering mattresses and pillows in matching colors.

Dark colors are more suitable for country house design or an estate garden, since pallets and pillows of a similar shade painted in this color are non-staining and look good against the backdrop of natural landscapes in gazebos. White designs look good in hallways with pillows of any color, and also look very interesting with a variety of bright prints.

Muted tones are perfect for the interiors of private houses and country houses. Firstly, with such colors you don’t need to wash the pillows too often, and secondly, dark textiles fit perfectly into the atmosphere of a twilight country house.

Tools and materials

Making furniture from pallets is a simple process, so you will need very few tools; in fact, this is a common set for working with wood:

  • hand or electric saw;
  • electric drill;
  • Sander;
  • hammer;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • measuring and marking tool.

Self-tapping screws, bolts or nails can be used as fasteners. To give greater rigidity to the corner joints, metal corners will be needed. To complete the work, you can’t do without paint or furniture varnish.

How to make it yourself

Wooden pallets have suitable dimensions, making a garden sofa made from pallets comfortable to use. There are single- and double-deck products, which, depending on the project, are built into the structure entirely or disassembled into parts. The entire manufacturing process is divided into several stages.

Preparatory stage

Any step-by-step instructions for making a sofa from pallets includes the following preliminary work:

  1. Preparation. If not only whole pallets are required, but also a part of non-standard sizes, the containers are disassembled and the boards are sorted by width and condition. A simple, medium-sized structure requires 5-6 pallets. For a corner model with a back and armrests, you will need more of them.
  2. Grinding. Often, not the entire surface is treated, but only the external fragments in contact with the body. To do this, use a grinding machine or sandpaper.
  3. Treatment. If you are making a sofa that is planned to be used outdoors, do not forget about moisture protection. Wood is treated with primers, impregnations, and paints.
  4. Selection of tools. You will need an electric drill with attachments, a tool for cutting wood, sandpaper, and a hammer. You can’t do without hardware (screws, nails, corners), glue and brushes. It is worth stocking up on a tape measure and consumables (paint and varnish) in advance.

Before starting work, it is advisable to understand how to make sofas from pallets with your own hands step by step. You definitely need to take care of the drawing. Having the skill, you can make your own diagram. Beginners are recommended to use a ready-made one from the Internet. For the simplest model, it is not necessary to spend time on detailed drawing; it is enough to limit yourself to a sketch.

Sanding the pallet

Paint coating

Step-by-step instruction

The complexity of manufacturing depends on the chosen model. Folding sofas made from pallets take more effort and time than an ottoman or a children's version, but the result will be much more interesting. Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Making a bench. 4 pallets are stacked one on top of the other, leveled and fastened together with nails.
  2. Production of armrests. The pallet intended for these elements is sawn in half. The resulting parts are attached to the base. To obtain a truly high-quality product, it is better to replace nails with self-tapping screws.
  3. The back is made similarly to the sides. Legs are attached to the lower pallets. Their role is successfully performed by wooden blocks. They need to be mounted both at the edges of the product and in the middle.
  4. Final processing. The product is carefully sanded, coated with an anti-rotting agent, and painted with the selected paint and varnish composition.

No matter how beautiful the sofa is, without the soft part it will not be comfortable for everyday use. Once assembly is complete, the bench and backrest are measured to create a comfortable seat. The fabric for the sofa should be selected in accordance with the chosen style.

Assembly

Ready-made sofa from pallets

Stages of assembling a sofa

Few people didn’t like assembling something from construction set parts as a child. In the process of making a sofa from a pallet, something similar can be seen. There are several parts of the same type, but how to connect them and what kind of thing the result will be depends on the master alone.

A sketch that you can sketch yourself or find on the Internet will help you figure out how to make a sofa from pallets. Since the work is not particularly complex, for most models a full-fledged drawing will not be needed. It’s enough to choose a photo of the product you like, and then it’s up to spatial thinking.

The sequence of assembling the product varies depending on the chosen model, step-by-step instructions vary, however, several main stages of work can be distinguished.

Seat

The first step in the instructions for assembling a sofa is to make its main part - the seat. It consists of several pallets stacked on top of each other. A low sofa is assembled from two pallets, a high one from three or four. The platforms are installed on top of each other; self-tapping screws are used as fasteners. It is advisable to reinforce external joints with metal corners.

Depending on the chosen design of the product and the type of pallets used, the top of the seat can be covered with a sheet of plywood or reinforced with several additional slats that are nailed between the pallet boards.

If you are planning furniture for a house or apartment, it would be a good idea to install furniture wheels. This will make the cleaning process much easier and will make it possible to move furniture within the room.

Back

There are two options for making the backrest. It can be a whole pallet, which is attached at the end to the seat, or a half installed on top of the seat. Each option has its pros and cons. The first provides greater reliability due to the larger contact area with the base, but requires additional material. As a result, the sofa will be wider. The second one saves material, takes up less space, but cannot boast of high reliability.

In any case, the back is secured with self-tapping screws and reinforced with angles. The front part of the back is also covered with plywood or several planks are nailed.

Armrests and storage boxes

One of the distinctive features of the sofa is the armrests. They are made using the same technology as the backrest. Depending on the chosen design, they can be lower than the back, flush with it, or located at an angle.

An additional bonus from using pallets as furniture material is their hollow structure. The voids inside the sofa cannot but be used for storing bedding and other small items. For these purposes, drawers are made from plywood. The boxes can be installed during the assembly of the product or after completion of the work.

Finishing

Paint or furniture varnish will help give the product a finished look. What exactly to choose as a decorative coating depends entirely on the wishes of the master. A sofa covered with stain and several layers of varnish will look great. If the wood is not fresh, it is easier and more reliable to paint it in any color you like.

Soft seat

If, according to the master’s idea, the sofa should not be placed in the yard or garden, you need to worry about the comfort of the person sitting on it and the overall aesthetics of the product. We need to make pillows.

Note! The best material for creating a soft seat is foam rubber.

The thickness of the filler should be at least 20 cm. To make the pillow last longer, a thin layer of batting or felt should be placed on top of the foam rubber.

There are several options for making a soft seat and back upholstery. This can be a solid mattress attached to a base, or several separate, removable pillows. In any case, the upholstery material for the seat should be soft, but durable. Excellent results are achieved by using suede, microfiber, and velor.

Standard pallet sizes

We figured out the assembly, diagram, design. Let's decide on the sizes.

Pallets from which furniture is made are divided into two types:

  • Europallet, its dimensions are 80 cm by 120 cm.
  • Finnish pallet, it is slightly wider than 100 cm by 120 cm.

The height of both pallets is 14 cm

Add the two flights in length and we get 240 cm - the length of the sofa. And for a corner pallet, one side is 240 + 80 = 320 cm for the long side (Euro pallet), and the length of the shorter side is 240 cm.

3 main rules when choosing the size of a sofa:

  1. Against the background of the room, the sofa should look stylish, even if it is cheap.
  2. The dimensions of the furniture are selected first, after which the required amount of materials is purchased.
  3. Don't make them huge if you have a small apartment.

The advantages and convenience of sofas made from pallets is that it can be very low-slung. Conversely, you can assemble a sofa from three pallets on top, which makes it tall.

Making a sofa frame

The master class on making the frame part of the sofa is very simple. For this you will need wooden pallets, fasteners and tools, finishing materials (varnish, paint).

When the sanding process is completed, you can begin cutting to size. At this stage, a well-sharpened hacksaw will come in handy to ensure even and neat cuts.

When the elements for the base of the sofa are ready, you need to start finishing the pallets. After assembling the structure, it will be difficult to reach some places with a roller or brush. After processing the pallets, let the paint dry thoroughly before proceeding with further manipulations with the workpieces.

When the paint is completely dry, begin assembling the frame part. At this stage, the structure will take its shape.

To connect elements together, it is most convenient to use self-tapping screws. If you fasten the pallets with nails, the sofa will quickly begin to creak and become loose. To avoid splitting the boards, pre-drill holes for self-tapping screws with a drill, the diameter of which should be less than the diameter of the self-tapping screw. This will add strength to the structure. If you use 4 mm self-tapping screws, prepare the holes using a 2 mm drill.

The angle of the backrest of the sofa can be selected according to your wishes. The vertical design is easier to make. However, an inclined back will make the sofa more comfortable. When choosing this design option, take care to give the structure additional strength.

After the frame is assembled and finished, you can safely move on to the final stage - decorating the soft component of the sofa.

What you need to know when designing a sofa from pallets

A pallet is a wooden structure that simplifies the transportation of various goods. The weight of an empty pallet is about 15-20 kg. The most common designs are of two types:

  • euro size 1200x800;
  • standard 1200x1000.

Every craftsman will confirm that pallets are an ideal material for constructing furniture yourself, especially for beginners. A convenient shape, low cost of raw materials, natural materials and built-in strength (can withstand loads of up to 1 ton) will allow you to make a unique sofa that will last for many years.

To simplify the task, the process of creating a sofa is divided into two stages:

  1. Preparing a frame from wooden pallets.
  2. Choice of finishing (textiles, pillows, mattresses).

If you cannot make the soft upholstery of a sofa yourself or order it to be made according to individual measurements in a studio, you need to determine in advance what size ready-made mattresses and pillows you will buy. This will be the determining factor on which the shape of the frame made of wooden pallets will depend.

If you initially make the base out of pallets, you may end up in a situation where you won’t be able to find the mattress and pillows of the required size. And without soft elements, the sofa risks losing its class and turning into a garden bench, which is not so comfortable to sit on.

Once it is known how many and what kind of mattresses will be used, the master can begin designing a frame from pallets. The sofa can be made straight, U-shaped, corner, or come up with your own unique shape. Everything here will depend on the place where the master plans to place the furniture, the available materials and the flight of imagination.
